This is NOT spam! On July 6, 2003 There will be a hacking contest. I honestly suggest everyone Keep there computers off for today. Look http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20030705/wr_nm/tech_hacking_contest_dc_1, a Yahoo News Article / http://www.defacers-challenge.com/Defacers Challenge Official Website (which contains the info in BADLY spoken english. Please forward this to everyone you know. Firewalls are pretty good protection, but there is always a loophole. Be sure to keep your computer off especially if you have broadband connection without a firewall. Dont ask me if this is true, it is! I left you links to websites.. ~h1t3k9u9 (aim sn)

C'mon. Why would that even matter to a web surfer? This would only affect site owners.

Didn't you know? If you go online that day and stumble across a website that has been tampered with, your own computer's screensaver will automatically be reset so that "I aM gUlLiBlE!" scrolls marquee-style across your screen.

Yep, it was Twig. :) (You can see it for yourself by scrolling down to the bottom of this page to check out the Similar Threads sectionl)
Orixx, please don't take what I said the wrong way. I wasn't trying to be mean to you because I realize you were just trying to watch out for people here. I just thought it would be funny if a cracker/hacker/whoever *did* do that.

heheh..well..as a site OWNER....what should I be afraid of? If my server has a firewall, am I okay? If I have norton antivirus, should I be okay? Do we need a personal firewall, as well?

Just back up whatever files you have on your site... supposedly, if your site gets hit, they'll deface it and remove files and stuff.

There's a thread on this in Computers & Internet, you know, the forum we have to post about the internet? :D
That said, unless you run a web server yourself it's not something that should concern you. Just as Morrighana said, just make sure your files are backed up.
My server got hacked a couple weeks ago and the funny thing was no one noticed until the next day, after the nightly backups ran, so the hacked pages got backed up over the non hacked pages. Hah!

I was updating two of my sites the other nite and found that for some unknown reason question marks were all over my sites! I use the same hosting co. for both of them so I figured it was a server thingy.
Then I saw the news story (before I came here) and thought....:eyebrow:
But no. I know that it wasn't the evil hackers but rather, the question mark fairies!!!
*edited to add*
Hackers hit hundreds of sites. (http://apnews.excite.com/article/20030707/D7S4C44G1.html)
