Anyone know of any snake species that remain somewhat small, enough to feed them crickets or goldfish? I don't think I could stomach feeding one live mice, let alone rats or rabbits as they got bigger, but I really like snakes and would like to keep one as a pet.

Snakes are one of those animals that grow depending upon environment. If you feed them small, and keep them in a small environment, they don't get really big very fast. They make awesome pets if you keep in mind, all snakes bite... and you will get bit at some point. You could start with a garter snake... they are pretty small.

I am sorry to say that this is not true. I am a replile rescuer and this is a what a lot of people think and keep there snake is small tank and deny food and then I have to come in a try to save the snake most times they do not survie when the are treated in that matter.
there are a few species of water snakes that dont get very big and make great pet. king snake .com is about the best place to get info on all kinds of snake. good luck in your search they are a great pet to own.( I should know I have 6 at the moment and may be getting 5 more in a rescue real soon )

I like corn snakes. Very pretty and colorful.
I think anyone who wants to get an exotic pet (such as a herptile or avian companion) should read up on the subject for two whole years. Read everything you can get your hands on... books, magazines, e-zines.... etc. And *then* make a decision. If you have to ask what kind you should get, you're not ready to get one anyway. Study must come first if you are going to be responsible for the life of another creature.

Definitely, which is why I'm doing this research. And in this case, the species-concern isn't for vanity, it's a concern of how well I could take care of the creature. I used to work at an exotic pet store, and I saw too many people take both reptiles and birds home that probably shouldn't have.

Good. :) I've been obsessing for the last ten minutes over whether I sounded really harsh. I wasn't trying to sound like a grump, really I wasn't. **nods** The birds thing is exactly what prompted that post. **shakes head** My cousin Christopher is one I'd like to beat severely for treating his animals the way he does. (Actually, there isn't a single animal on the planet that likes this kid. How his pets tolerate him at all is beyond me.)

I have found cute little snakes in my back yard on several occasions - about six to eight inches long, tan in color, with rows of little black spots running down the back. I believe they eat the insects in my garden. Anyone have any idea whether one of these would survive if brought indoors as a pet?
