View Full Version : Why Do We Have Any Cats At All?

Flar's Freyja

Flar just came home and asked, "Why do I have any cats at all? If I just wanted to have dirty litter boxes and throw money away on cat food, I could do that on my own! Hell, I could pee in a litter box and make a mess......"

:rotfl:

So, why do we have cats? I know that ALL of the ones I've had for the past 15 years have been rescues. I can't stand to see an animal freezing or out in the heat, starving or otherwise doing without, and if there's room in my house they end up getting in. If you count the two that I left with my son, I actually have six!

And Flar has something that I'll call "cattachment disorder".........If there's a kitten, a stray, or whatever, I've had to start telling him NO, don't pet it, talk to it, feed it.........We'd have 30 or 40 if it was up to him!

So, why do you have cats?

In my observation and life I believe we have cats to remind us that we are not infallibale and we are not the masters of the universe. In short, (IMHO) cats are here to remind us that we are not omnipotent and we are not in control, they have a way of "putting us in our place."

They do bring me peace of mind though. All of my cats may be seen at

Because they Choose Us.

That's the simplest and yet the most profound reason I've ever been able to figure out about it. They choose us, choose to share their love with us.

"The Egyptians worshipped cats as gods.......the cats have never forgotten this..........." :T

Our cats are chasing bugs as we speak.....when Groucho went after a lamp, Flar said, "Oh yeah, and so they can break our sh*t"

With ours, I often wonder myself. None of them are lap cats, although Groucho will cuddle up next to you but not on you, and Possum cuddles up with us only when we're sleeping. All four have different types of fur, and I'm actually allergic to Freyja's!

But they are pretty, soft and fun to watch......

Why do we have cats/ Lots of the same reasons as you. Because they are there to make you feel good, and they arethere to take you down a peg when needed. They are entertaining, but not overly so. (Like my dog...play with me, play with me, play with me...tongue hanging out...) And especially like Danu said. They choose us. All but one of the cats we ever had (7) were rescues.

And Freyja, I so can relate to the catattachement. Hubby always want to go look at the animals in the pet store. I can't- cuz if I did....

Ask the cats why they have human families... :D

Snuttis isn't mine - I'm his. I don't own him - he owns me. :D

I agree with shiloki (post #4) though. :D

I'm more a sucker for a poor starving stray......Flar's problem is with cute....We actually had found a home for Groucho, but he was too cute and we'd already gotten too attached, so when his friend said yeah, I'll take him - we said no! :stooges:

cats do have some uses, i guess.
for instance, when i found out that our black cat Newman ("helloooo Newman!") had a terrible and unexplained fear of the feather duster, i found myself dusting on a much more regular basis. so thanks to the cat, our bookshelves are virtually dust-free!

Because they're beautiful, perfect creatures. They are the Goddess's wonderful children and deserve love.

because they are cute and fuzzy and they get all stretched out in odd positions and rub on your legs and sleep on your head and get fur on all your black clothes.....

:rollingla So funny! If you used one of those static dusters you'd really make him crazy!! :rollingla

I'm allergic to cats and can't have them inside the house, but we use to have one outside, 'Courtney', good tom/cat but the tom got the best of him...he'll be back one day I guess.
My oldest love them, my youngest is allergic.

The only beef I have about them is the way they weave themselves round and round your legs, ugh! I can't stand that, but i'm funny about being touched with out wanting to be touched, not to mention the 'trip factor'. :ahhhh:

Their good for keeping the mouse population down.

I've got nothing against them, wish i were not allergic.

I dont know why I have cats...well if you can call them 'my' in one case and 'cat' in the other.

Tigger looks like a cat...purrs and meows and such...but he isn't a cat. I don't know exactly what he is...but it's not a cat.

Jessie IS a cat...but she isn't mine. Hell, sometimes I wonder if she really lives here. She does like my daughter...and my daughter loves her. Prolley the reason I haven't killed her *begins grumbling about his upstairs carpet* I think Jesse just sees us as the dumb tall people that are stupid enough to leave food and water out so she can eat when she is too lazy to kill something. Plus its nice when the dumb tall people let her in when its raining. Our house and yard is simply her hunting ground.

Because some cats chose me and because I'm a sucker for stray waifs...

One of my four furkids jumped into my window when he was a kitten and just stayed. Another has been with me only a few months... he was a stray that would do anything to get inside our house.

uhm..I have no idea why I have cats. Some have chosen me, and some have been times when I just couldn't say NO (even though I probably should have)..
I always liked what Cleveland Amory wrote about cats...something to the effect that when you live with a dog, you live with a perpetual 4 year old who is always ecstatic to see you. But when you live with a cat it is like living with a very elderly, maiden aunt who KNOWS that the only reason you are being nice to her is to get written into her will..and she is not the least above taking advantage of that fact.
Anyway, they are my friends and my family and we all live together in something resembling organized chaos...

I like dogs...honestly! But I work a twelve-hour shift, & I couldn't take care of one right; be there to take it on walks, etc.
Cats are more self-sustaining,
Mine graciously allow me to stay here as long as the game is played by their rules. I pay the bills, buy the groceries, clean the litter boxes, play on the computer( though I assume that will change if they learn to operate it).
They're in charge of everything else.

In looking at the six that we have between us, I'm thinking that cat personalities vary more greatly than dogs. Not one of our six share any of the same personality traits.

Why do I have cats?

What an odd question.
Might as well ask me why I breathe...

I work at a vet's office..............I can't say no to fur babies. I actually only have two at the moment but I'll be moving soon and maybe the new house will need another??????
here's another reason , can you say no to something that will do this just to make you laugh..........

Be careful Rubi .... looks like the kitty may be after your brie (I dunno why I said Brie ... I was just reaching :farmerjoe )

On a similar note, I accidentally shut a cat in the fridge once during a midnight raid for something to drink ... I was half asleep and while I was pouring the milk she jumped in the bottom shelf -- she wasn't in there long, but she never got curious about it again.

Lets see here, Ozzy found his way into our home via a neighbor begging us to take him and resue him from the little kids who were trying to kill him. (he had just brought him home from an older family members house, who was going to the nursing home.) He has been King ever sense then.

Krusty was a birthday gift for Trey. The other two are here because Krusty got outside at the right/wrong time and spawned six of the little beauties! The two that were left have thrown their anchors down. Sandy, who looks identical to her mama, is mol's cat, although she really belongs to another. It was love at first site when she met Toads wife, but they are saying no to her coming home with them...for now! Still working on that one! The other little cutie is supposed to go to a friend after she can be declawed, but I don't know if we will actually give her up at that point because she loves us too much..or something. I think as long as we pretend that they are supposed to go somewhere else eventually, they can stick around forever!!
