View Full Version : WHY do we have a 5-day workweek?

I am so not wanting to be at work, and have had the previous 2 Friday's off, thus having a 3-day weekend. I was able to get all my errands done, and have fun...instead of cramming everything into a measly 48 hours.

So, why 5 days?? Why not 4?

When I lived in Phx, AZ I worked at a boarding school and I worked Monday thru Thursday, 10 am to 8pm and was off Friday thru Sunday. That was the best job!! Some companies in the larger cities have programs where you can do 10 hour days with 3 days off... I need to find another one of those!

I had the option of flex time at a job a few years ago - I worked Tuesday through Friday for 10 hours. Sometimes the work days really dragged, but having a 3 day weekend was soooo worth it. I totally understand what you mean.

For some reason you sound like our HR rep. Do you work here, also?

No...I was just messing with you. 5 is plenty and I love my job. :) No matter how much I love it...I love spending time with my wife and kids more.

I've been able to arrange my work schedule so that it's four or five days a week, but on some of those days I may only work 4 or 5 hours. I have found that even with that kind of flexibility, I still like having two or three days off in a row rather than scattered in between.

Could be worse. There was a time when people worked every day except during holy days.

I have said it before and I am saying it again...I have the best schedule in the world. Three nights a week..Friday 12 hrs, Saturday 12 hrs, and Sunday 8 hrs. Then off the rest of the week.

Sure I miss out on most of the things that happen on the week-end, but I spend each day with my kiddos and I don't dread going to work every day. Oh and did I mention that the week-end option position is the highest paid nursing position in the hospital?? I make more money than most of my grumpy co-workers and I am more rested!

Glad to hear it caught on in the smaller cities too; several of my friends that live in smaller areas were BEGGING for it.

When my dad was a kid, the work week was cut up really weirdly, at least in Southern Alberta where he grew up.... On Wednesdays, everyone would go home and close up stores and such at noon. Then on weekends, stores would be open on Saturdays, and closed on Sundays.... and all stores were closed on Sundays...it was the law. So the work week was basically, 5 1/2 days.... Monday, Tuesday, 1/2 Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday were all worked....

I agree totally! You know, one by one all of upper management has left. (Willow starts thinking that her time would be better spent at the pool with her kids)

Stay tuned to see if she (gasps!) LEAVES EARLY!

my better half works 4 days on and 4 days off...rotating schedule....hows that for nuts....the only thing that would make it better is if he was working during the day...he works 5 pm-3:30am...grrr and i work opposite and 5 days...i have a flexible schedule only because i work around 12 families schedules. some days its long and others are longer. i always have flex time but never can take it. but i like my job and its a foot in the door for something bigger (i.e. permenent art therapist position!)
