:RuNew: First of all,Hello to everyone!
Okay, now i am very new to tarot. I bought my first deck a few months ago,and have just decided to really get stuck into tarot.
Now i was wondering,is it ok for me to go and treat myself a lovely new deck that catches my eye and appeales to me? I bought the deck i have now, purely because it came in a box with a very helpful booklet, which i wanted just to learn the basics. But i would love to buy myself a new deck, one that "means" something to me,instead of one i got with a booklet. although i've heard alot that beginners should stick to traditional decks and not bother with the more themed decks, does this really matter? I didn't think it would,if you take the time to get to know your deck.
And just out of curiousty how does everyone keep there decks safe? Do you keep them in a box, wrapped in silk,or in the original box it came in? And how do you bless/cleanse your cards?...
Me myself,am going to buy a plain wooden box and paint my own symbols and meanings on,i think it's a more personal way of keeping your cards. And i like the idea of cleansing my cards using incense, espeically an incense from the water sign, which is my sign.
Well,thats all for now,

Hi there
welcome to the site hope your enjoying it here :D
I don't use the tarot but, I do use runes and I keep them in a small wooden box covered with a black silk cloth, I really don't know if you should keep them covered like you do with tarot cards but, I did anyway.
When I got them I left them in a small dish in the light of a full moon and just cleansed them is salt water. Obviously you can't do that with cards but, I would think doing the same with incense would be as goood.
I think it would be fine to buy another tarot deck if there is some deck that draws you to it then go for it :D
sorry I can't be of much help but, like I said I'm more of a runes girl :)
Good luck :hugz:

For the decks I use on a regular basis, I keep them in a silk knitted bag. The others I keep in their original boxes. Making your own personal box for your cards is a beautiful idea. I knit my own bags for my decks. I find this is one of the things that I do to bond with my deck better.
I don't believe that beginners (or anyone) should limit themselves to traditional decks only just because that's what they think they should do. No matter what others say, you're the one that is using the deck and it should speak to you. What works for one may not work for someone else.

Thanks for the advice ladies.
Yes,i think that is what i will do. Obviously not using salt water (lol) but using my incense and do it under a full moon.
Also i thought making my own box was a very beauitiful idea too, actually making anything to keep your runes or deck or whatever is a really precious way of keeping them,i think it's a way i can really bond with my deck! I just can't wait to go and buy a new one,one that really stands out to me!!

If you feel it's time to get a new deck most certainly do. I think however you should try to get something that keeps to the basics. Some decks have so much meaning in them they can be overwhelming and alot of decks stray from the traditional ones. I still consider myself in the beggining stages of tarot. I have three decks. Two which are pretty much well beyond my skill to use. None of them however are traditional.
Look around I get some advice on certain decks.

There are many, many books available for tarot beginners that you don't have to buy a deck with. Until you are comfortable with tarot I'd say stick to using one deck that isn't too complicated - a lot of the theme decks vary so far from the "normal" system that they're just more confusing.
Mind you, if the one you has isn't worth reading with then you might as well get one you will use.

I second and third the opinions gone before me....you need to buy a deck that does appeal to you..but many of the beautiful theme decks are so far removed from the more traditional tarot structure and symbolism that learning them might prove utterly confusing. There are many good decks with beautiful artwork that still follow the "blueprint" of one of the Waite decks. Sometimes it is hard to tell how successfully you will be able to work with any deck until you just plain try it. I have decks that I love the artwork in, but never really read with--there's just not the "click" that there is in some other decks.

I just wanted to make one little suggestion. I think you should do it under a New Moon. Not a Full Moon. Full Moon is usually for endings.
