We had one on IRC for a while which lasted something like a month. I think there was one before that too which suffered a similar fate...

I think we should start another one. I need to get IRC again

We brought this up a few months ago. Apparently, the MysticWicks database is a behemoth of a system, and mol is concerned that adding (or restoring) a chat room to it would result in a drop of server productivity and a general slow-down of the forum, which he (with good reason) considers to be the most important function of MW.

I've got a very boring day job, however, and wouldn't mind a little chat-ness. I can't get directly to IRC from work, but I can get to an IRC client from http://www.quickchat.org Just as an experiment, I've set up a chatroom at quickchat called #mysticwicks. If anyone would like to pop in and say hi, go to quickchat.org, click on "chat now", enter a name, and go into whatever room it suggests. When you connect, type "/part" and then "/join #mysticwicks". Or, conversely, if you're on IRC, just go to /server chat.planetz.net and then /join #mysticwicks.

Hope to see you there! :)

it gives me a 'page cannot be displayed' page for quickchat.org....

Ben, take the period behind the URL out.

Or, click http://www.quickchat.org - see Ben has a period at the end of his sentence and it becomes part of the URL which screws it up.

I'm pretty sure you can link it to the actual #mysticwicks room. Easier that way.

That's what I get for using grammatically correct punctuation. ;)

Well, there is no "actual #mysticwicks room". The way IRC works is that there's only a room if people are in it.

Grammar strikes back!

Well, yes and no. There are certain networks where you can register a room and it will continue to exist and have a set founder (the guy who registered the room), and set ops (they will get ops everytime they come into the room, as long as they've identified to their nick). There are other networks, like the one we were using earlier, that don't have that option. The chatroom that existed before also was on that kind of server and required bots to keep it open and make sure it didn't get abused.

Ah, I see. This is a much simpler model, I guess. And I set the room to +s so that no one could enter unless they already know the name of the room.
