Ok, I was in Niagara-on-the-Lake, browsing through the Shiny Company, when I came across this stone. It wasn't marked - it was just in a big pot with a bunch of other polished stones (I'm assuming they dumped them all in there when the other location down the street closed). It was the nicest teal colour, and it was clear. I bought it without knowing what it was.

After a few tests (like holding it under a black light) I've determined it's most likely fluorite - I don't know many other stones that turn bright purple under that kind of light.

Anyway, what puzzles me is how common this colour of fluorite is.

Also there's a white layer of something that runs right through the middle of the stone - it looks like someone broke the stone and stuck it back together with drywall putty or something. Any idea what the white stone is? It's opaque, but other than that I can't tell you anything about it.

Anyway, here's a photo of the stone in question.

Fluorite, one of my personal favorites, comes in a variety of colors. From the traditional green and purple to all sorts in between including teal.

I have many teal pieces and find them particularly calming.

The white in the stone could be one of two things:

Like quartz, when fluorite forms, if there is a fluctuation in temperature during the formation process then the stone will go through changes. For example, when it gets cold during a quartz formation, the stone gets cloudy or sometimes gets "veils" or what I call "ghosts" going through piece.

The other could be that while fluorite forms, it actually forms in diamond shaped blocks. Fluorite is a very fragile stone so many times the white areas are caused by some type of trauma to the stone itelf.

Not to plug my jewelry or anything (like I'd ever do that! ) since one of my fluorite is one of my favorites, I had made a necklace using all shades of the stone from clear to teal to a deep amethyst type of purple. I hate to say this, but I'm still tempted to keep the damn thing!

Hope this helps!!! :D
