Merry Meet Everyone!

Anyone know how to make bath salts with Dead Sea Salt? How do you color the salt? Do you add essential oils?

Bath Salt Recipe...

There are lots of variations of bath salts...here's s good basic recipe. You can sub dead sea salts to replace all or a portion of the salt called for.

3/4 cup sea salts
1/4 cup epsom salts
15-20 drops of favourit essential oils
1/4 tsp orris root powder

Mix & store in an air tight container.

You can't really colour the salts unless you dissolve the salts in a dye bath & dry out the salts again but you're using chemicals you may not want in your bath. You can add herbs & clays to colour the spaces between the salts. The orris root powder acts as a fixative for the essential oils to hold the fragrance longer. Dead sea salts is really expensive so most people mix it with other sea salts. In the sea salt mixture, you can sub in 1/4 cup each of fine sea salts, dead sea salts, & coarse sea salts. This will give a very nice texture to your mix & looks good packed up.

Thanks Mysty! I have a recipe, I think it is very similar, if not the same. What oils have you tried out so far?
I was thinking of a bergamot/lemon blend for me. A nice pick me up, I was thinking. I could always use something like that.

Chryssi,

I made Orange Blossom, Lavender, Sandalwood and Vanilla-Rose using soap safe fragrance oils. I also used liquid colorant made for soaps. Mixed with a fork into the coarse sea salt in a bowl and sealed it up for a few days. Then I packaged them in small 7 oz. apothecary jars. They smell fabulous!

Mol, he he he. too funny! Actually, Dead Sea Salt gently exfoliates dead skin cells and nourishrd new skin with precious minerals and helps in the treatment of skin conditions such as Eczema and Psoriasis.

Why is it called the Dead Sea?
Sounds kind of creepy, doesn't it? It's called the Dead Sea because nothing lives in it. It is some of the saltiest water anywhere in the world, almost six times as salty as the ocean! There's no seaweed or plants of any kind in or around the water. There are no fish or any kind of swimming, squirming creatures living in or near the water. As a matter of fact, what you'll see on the shores of the Sea is white, crystals of salt covering everything.. And this is no ordinary table salt, either. The salts found in the Dead Sea are mineral salts, just like you find in the oceans of the world, only in extreme concentrations. The water in the Dead Sea is deadly to living things, excluding people. Fish accidentally swimming into the waters from one of the several freshwater streams that feed the Sea are killed instantly.

Just a tidbit! [grin]

And only salt from the Dead Sea can be called Dead Sea Salt. If you ever go swimming in the Dead Sea, you will float.

you can also mix
3 parts epsom
2 parts baking soda
and i part table salt, borax,or your dead sea salt
you can than color it by adding food color.a few drops at a time
if you need to mix colors mix it first than add.the more drops added the darker the hue.
than add your oils drop by drop:)
that comes from incense oils and brews the book by scott
cunningham.

That site is amazing! I'm going to busy with the bath salts section alone until the end of next year!

in fact I'm starting a business where one of the things I'll be selling is bath salts.

You can color salts using a number of different things, there are micas, gels, liquid coloring, anything you can use to color soaps you make you can use to color salts. You just put the coloring in and blend the salts until the color is dispersed. I also add some moisturizing oils to my salts like sweet almond, coconut and jojoba.

You can even just use the sea salts on their own without adding anything to them. Just scent and color and go with that. Your imagination is the only limit! I use essential oils as well as cosmetic grade fragrance oils. Once you master the bath salts give bath bombs (fizzies) a try! They make an incredible bath!
