Hey all, I've been hearing alot of speculation about this up-coming event, and wonder how you guys feel about it.

Peace

So is the ending of the calendar that they(the Mayans) simply stopped, or is it they forcast there would be no "need to procede"? And, if it is of the latter, did they leave any indication as to why?

Hmmmm, let me get back to you on that. I wonder if one of these very kowledgeable moderators could point me in a good direction for research on that-as to all I can seem to find is data on the calendar itself, not really explanations on its ending.

Thanks

Or did they just run out of room, and started another calendar which hasn't been found? *wink*

There are so many theories surrounding this that it's hard to know what to believe. I'll see if I can find some info for you greenthumb, I'd like to refresh my knowledge of it too.

Some scientists believe the inside of the Great Pyramid to be a calandar. It ended on May 5, 2000 without incident. Perhaps someone has forgotten to make a new one, or maybe they were just waiting for the desk-top version.

My husband and I were talking about this on the weekend, and we were wondering if it's possible that calenders circle round? Begin at the beginning again? It's an interesting thought.

I know that it is very possible. One of the things that they were doing to fix the problem with y2k, for people who couldn't afford an upgrade, was to set the calandar back to an identical year. I can't remember how many years exactly, but a calandar definately comes back around. I don't know if it applies in these cases, but it would be interesting to research.

I hadn't heard that Socharis, that's rather interesting! Will have to look into that some more. I wonder if it's in the book I'm reading right now, "Ancient Mysteries" by Peter James and Nick Thorpe... will have to see.

Coincidentally, I was reading that book last night, and the section I'm up to is on "Mayan civilisation" VERY interesting stuff! They had a section covering the calendar, and I am going to post the info here later on when I have more time, it's interesting to note that the Mayans apparently don't believe that it's definitely the end of the world, but that we will go through a huge transition.

It's a very interesting read as they discuss the two calendars that the mayans used, and how they interact together. So keep an eye out for that info I'll post later!

I believe that the Mayan Calendar ends in 2012... (Sometime around when the Sun changes it's poles, or something like that) I can't quite remember right now what exactly it was... Hmmm... I think that I saw something on the History or Discovery Channel on it... You might want to try searching for it at either www.discovery.com or www.historychannel.com

*skipping off to look for the info*

The bit of reading I've done does suggest that the Mayans felt the ending of the calendar is the point of a brand new era. These last years before being the count down & preparation time for that event. I don't have the site handy- but i beleive i found some good information on a search for "mayan prophecy".

All I can add to this is that The Bible says we will not know the exact time of the end......

I read that though their calendar stops at 2012, that they continued to make some predictions for past that date. Some interpret the "end" as some sort of spiritual/psychological shift somewhat like "The Age of Aquarius" concept. I haven't done any research into this, I think there is probably too many holes in the surviving evidence to come up with a clear conclusion.

Aw man, the day before Christmas? That's not cool! Couldn't they have the world end on the morning of January 1, when we're all passed out and hung over?

stupid mayans!

I actually celebrate Yule on the 21st. Some do it the day before that. Other's do it the day after. I've never heard of Yule on the 23rd though. Interesting.

hmm. . . maybe the way the calender thing is. . . maybe it starts a new calender! like how before was BC, now is AD, maybe it'll be something like ABC (after big crisis . . . ;) ). I have this funny feeling. . . like there's going to be some kind of huge full-world crisis and then this huge peaceful civilization. . . then again that could just be me and my weird dreams hehe.

in a Japanese manga (comic book), there's a story called Sailor Moon (if you've seen the show on TV, the manga is a bit different). Around the date mentioned (2012) a young woman suddenly becomes herself from a past life, a Princess from the moon, and she uses her powers to purify the earth and make it a peaceful place, and she becomes the queen of this eutopia-ish society.

I've heard this theme repeated a LOT of times, always around the same date. Maybe the collective human subconsious is trying to say something? That sometime in the near future something will happen that brings forward a person who can bring peace to the world?

hehe speculating. . .

I just remembered that I forgot to post the URL to the excerpt from a book I was reading. You can find it online here...

http://www.angelfire.com/ms3/mysticalm/mayan.html

I thought it was interesting, not because of the whole "world ending flood stuff" I don't put a lot of stock in that, but that they think there will be a new "cycle" entered into on Dec 23rd 2012.
Which could mean any number of things. :)

Hope you find it interesting.

Thanks for bringing this up...I really like the Hopi Prophecies, myself. Far more hopeful, to me anyway.
