June 12th, 2001, 03:25 PM
This month, for the first time, the award-winning PBS
series "Religion and Ethics Newsweekly" is scheduled to air a
segment on the religion of Wicca. Religion and Ethics
Newsweekly is a nationally televised half-hour news program
dedicated to comprehensive coverage of religious diversity and
ethical issues in America.

While the content of the finished segment is not known,
according to those interviewed, objective questions on various
subjects---including Wiccan theology and practices,
discrimination, and teen interests---were discussed.

Among those interviewed were renowned Wiccan High Priestesses
and authors Margot Adler, Phyllis Curott
http://www.bookofshadows.net/
and Patricia Kennealy-Morrison
http://www.lizardqueen.com/index2.html
Additionally, the crew filmed the annual public Beltane
celebration in Central Park sponsored by New Moon New York
( http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Thebes/9667/NMNY.html )and a
private ritual at the Temple of Ara.

This segment is scheduled to air on Channel 13, WNET, in
New York City, on Sunday, June 17th at 6:30 pm. For dates and
times when this nationally syndicated series airs on other PBS
stations, check your local listings or the Religion & Ethics

:( It looks like I'm going to miss this one..... seeing as how it'll be on at 5:00am, where I am. I would tape it, but the timed record on the vcr is broken.
For those who watch it, let the rest of us know how it was, okay? :)

Amethyst Rose-- do you have instant record? My timed recording was broken for a while, so what I did was buy an eight-hour tape and set it for instant right before I went to bed.

Thanks SAHM for telling us about this! I can't wait for it. :D

Hi Amethyst Rose,

Can you let me know what day? I couldn't find anything on the PBS search...but then, I get confuse turning on the computer sometimes. Thanks!

Wildchild: Well, I did a search on the PBS site for the show, on June 17 (which is when the original post said it was going to be on), and came up with it airing at 5:00am.
The PBS site did not, however, say what topic the show would be about on that day, soo.....

As to the instant record.... I'll have to see how loud my vcr is when it's recording, cuz it's in the bedroom. If it won't keep us up half the night, then I'll give it a try. Thanks for the idea, loopy. :)

Is there anyone in Wisconsin?

I found out it's showing on Sunday at 12.30pm HOWEVER, we don't have cable or anything like that, and I'm not sure I get PBS via ordinary cable. Is it Channel 27 in WI? Anyone know? It's like the only one I rarely watch because it doesn't come in the best and I'm not fiddling with the antenna without a good reason!

I woke up this morning at like 9:30 ....fiddled with the vcr for about an hour to get it working and to find a tape to tape this on...FINALLY got it all figured out...took a quick shower and got back to my room just in time for the 11:00 start....there was this old guy cooking and I got instantly really upset....thinking they weren't showing it or the listing on the website was wrong.....I yelled into the other room "it's not on" to my husband....he yelled back "you sure it's supposed to be on today" ....I yelled back "Yeah...it's says Sun. the 17th..." he yells back "Well, today's Sat. the 16th!!!" *blush* I think I need a vacation!!!

In the immortal words of Homer Simpson "DOH!!"

Uuugghhh!

I did not learn about Wicca through books, websites or online chat rooms. My knowledge of Wicca was passed down to me, learned first hand from Wiccans in other traditions, many other traditions and incorporated into our "belief system" at the time...

I have been Wiccan for many years, and I must say, these are the ideals being fed to society? This is the view of what Wicca is? This is what Wicca has become over the past XX years?

When people think of Wicca, this is what they think of it, this is what I have become associated with?

When I heard there was going to be show about Wicca on TV, one to "set the record straight," I was excited. Sorry to say, now I am (for lack of a better word)... ashamed.

Sheesh! I sure hope I haven't lost the key to that damn broom closet!

"Wicca, or modern witchcraft, is a polytheistic, earth-based religion. It emphasizes feminism and the environment and encourages diversity of beliefs. It has no theological system or creed, no central text, and no hierarchy."

I know of a good hanful of Wiccans who would stew over this paragraph alone. Emphasises femninsm? No, it just doen'st coo to patriarchy. No theological system? Booo.

"Wiccans say they don't target anyone. "
Llewellyn does. And $ilver Ranvenwolf does.

And I find it interesting that they included a link to her book at th ebottom, almost like a tongue-in-cheek afterthought....

Overall, though, not a bad article.

I surely can not speak for Revelation, but the author and publisher mentioned (among many others) do target people...

IMO, they target seekers with their drivel, people who are simply looking for some information, some direction, most of them being young people... all in the name of spirituality, all to make a quick buck!

Ashamed, yep, that is the word I was looking for...

Ah. I was thinking when they said "target" they meant like attacking others for their beliefs, and add that to my sleeplessness makes for a very confused beetle. :D Thanks for clearing it up for me. :)

I was quite disappointed as well when I read the article (stoopid me was awake at 6:00 a.m. this morning when it was supposed to air and I forgot all about it). So thanks, Chryss for posting that link.

What disappoints me, as well as a lot of you, is that they hardly made an effort to extoll the virtues and joys of being a child of Nature! They gave some facts, but not the ones that counted. And saying that Wicca is 'targeting' youngsters? Well sure, teenagers may see Wicca as something that was missing in their lives, and yes, there are teenagers who see Wicca as a way to rebel (I think there are more of those than the serious ones, personally), but there was no support to the truly good side of Wicca that gives people, children and adults, the freedom to be one with their Deity, with the World...they didn't seem to show any kind of real communion with Nature (ie a ritual, which even Sully Erna of Godsmack did in one of his videos) or the true nature of the Goddess....grrr...*snarl*...ugh...I gotta go wash something....just don't get me started!!!

Okay, I've babbled on long enough. blessings all

I stand with the majority on this one!! I was hoping this would be a piece I could show my husband and say "See, this is what it's all about...and there's nothing wrong with it!!" all of those "Christians" on there were just simply uneducated in what they were talking about, in my opinion!! I thought that Christianity was supposed to be a religion where you "love others as yourself" those people did nothing but say that Wicca is wrong and condemned by God.....why would God condemn people for using what He gave them...That's not the God I grew up believing in...I'm telling you...the more time that goes on the more Christian I feel I am not (keeping in mind I consider myself Christian/Wiccan) I don't want to be associated with those kind of people!! I could go on about this forever!! I did tape it, and I watched it twice...because I just couldn't believe some of the things I was hearing!! The only thing I was happy to see was that it showed that Witches are ordinary people just like everyone else....not the ones with "green faces on the mole on their noses!!" I was very disappointed with this show...I'm hoping that one day one will come out that IS material suitable enough to play for my husband:)

I taped it & I'm glad I didn't get up at 5:00 am to watch it. Considering the time allocated to the Wiccan portion was only about 10 mins, I think it wasn't terrible. The subject was just too broad to be covered in that short time span. They did try to bring the point across that wiccans are ordinary people. Maybe someday, someone will do a longer documentary on Wiccans & other pagan traditions.

I didn't get to see the show but went to the link at the bottom of the page "Christian answers for the New age".

this is how it opens :

Welcome!
What is the New Age?
What is truth?
What is spirituality?
What is the occult?

Are you exploring different paths that claim to lead to truth or to holistic spirituality? Or maybe you are wondering about the supernatural. If you are exploring or just mildly curious, please check out the information on this site. Be open to it and see for yourself what is here. Don't let any preconceived ideas be a barrier. Your exploration may lead to something interesting.

This site is owned by Marcia Montenegro, a former professional astrologer for 8 years and teacher of astrology; a former practitioner for many years of Eastern-type meditation and beliefs, and who engaged in various occult practices such as having a spirit guide and doing astral travel.

Ok hearing former should have tipped me off but I tired Ok. This lady is basically putting down all of the New Age evils even Harry Potter. She was not Wiccan or Pagan so her experience does not lean to Goddess worship but to Eastern Religions and Astrology, she used to be a president of the astrology association in Atlanta. But reading her "story" she sounds like one very messed up lady that could not or was not given the tools to make peace with her self or past. I hope not too many newbies check out her site from that page. As for wiccans/pagans/witchcraft it starts out with a few basics, that she learned from clients who were witches, then goes into how God condems it and bible verses you can look up. She sounds like my brainwashed sister. Oh well life moves on.

I have to agree with you all, I was pretty disappointed. My husband and I watched it together. He is not Pagan, but is keeping an open mind and is very interested in what I am learning. The good side of this show is that the Witches and the clips of the rituals were so joyous and peaceful. Hopefully that will be a point on our side that Witches are not these evil creatures doing something wrong as that one woman claimed. I really resented the use of the word "target" as they stated Wiccans target teens. C'mon. grrr. Like teens are solely a marketable commodity. Yes, some teens might look at it that way, but there are many teens who are very sincere- just look at the group of teens we have here. What about Christian Teen groups.. aren't they targeting teens too?

I guess it could have been worse considering it was only 10 minutes long. Does anyone know if there was an address/email to the producers of the show? Maybe we could contact them and ask for a follow up?

Just a thought!

Chris
PS I thought that Christian woman made a fool of herself!

I woke up hours early this Sunday to watch what I thought was going to be enlightening and wonderous. To tell the truth, I saw a better special two years ago on TLC. But it was specifically about Coveners and Samhain.
Anyhow, here it was on at Sunday morning 11AM. It was short, 10-15 minutes long. Not informative, and not postitive, I think.
I got very distracted by their follow up with the woman who kept talking about hell and idol worshipers. If they are going to do a piece on another religion, they may aswell do it right. All I saw were incorrect generalizations about "Wiccans"....or "modern witches". And, a whole bunch of hokey stuff. Anyhow, those coveners shown looked happy and productive...it looked like a lovely cerimony they were doing. But, it was so broad...and just...very wrong at times.
I was, to say the least, disappointed. Afterwards, I went back to watching Ghost Dad. lol
