A BIKINI top and shorts proved too much for Tesco in Sleaford when Elizabeth Webster arrived to do some shopping. Church chorister Elizabeth, 43, was appalled when she was collared by a member of staff while choosing oranges with her 15-year-old daughter last Tuesday morning.
The Ruskington mother-of-three was told her bikini and shorts were not appropriate shopping wear and was advised to dress more suitably the next time she visited.
Elizabeth said: “I was basically told I was too hot for Tesco, which I found very offensive. I wasn’t even taken to one side – it was just done there and then in front of all the other customers.

I wonder if the store had one of those signs that says "No shoes, no shirt, no service"? Does a bikini top count as a shirt? Would my bra count as a shirt?
She used poor judgement in my opinion. It was unnecessary for them to talk to her in front of the other customers, but it only takes a second to throw on a tank top.

Wow....good discussion topic, Mol. You always seem to find the good stuff. As much as I'd like to rant about how this woman was wronged,...and should be allowed to wear whatever she wants to shop....I also have to say that the store owner (or manager, I guess) should have the right to say...I dont want to serve you. So, alas, guess she'll have to find a store who is not opposed to her attire. If you don't like someone's business practices, then don't go there. But don't tell them they HAVE to allow such and such to shop their business.....

I agree with Arylon. I don't think a bikini top is the right thing to wear to go shopping. But the manager should not have been so public with his censure. Maybe she wasn't the first one to wear inappropriate clothing to shop there and the manager decided to make an example of her out of frustration? Still wasn't the right way to handle it. Placing a sign in the doorway saying swimsuits were not adequate covering would have been better I think.

“But there are reasons why dressing skimpily or inappropriately is not suitable when there are small children around or for hygiene reasons. There is fresh food on sale which could be affected.”
I fail to see how fresh food is affected by a woman in a bikini.
It's not like she's using the bikini as a tote bag or a scale.

Man, this country is so puritanical. They're just boobies, folks.
What makes a bikini appropriate at a beach and inappropriate in a grocery store?

Who Knows it could have been one of the newer Tankini things!
I we would have had to be there to get the whole thing.

you said it, what's the big deal with boobs? we've all seen em. personally i wouldn't care if people went shopping naked. people here are conditioned to think that nakedness is bad, and when they see it, they're shocked. but look at all these tribal societies where they go around with their boobies, etc... hanging out, butt naked. that's normal to them, and it doesn't hurt anything, it doesn't make them sex fiends or make them have orgies 24/7 or anything... it's just a mindset thing. i get so pissed off when i think of the stupid, stupid stuff (this is only one of many things) people accept just because they were conditioned and raised that way. can't people think for themselves? don't they ever question?? if they did, they would realize there was no logical, REASONABLE reason that a woman could not shop in a bikini... okay sorry that turned into a rant... i need to go to bed now...

Call me puritanical, but I'd have to draw the line here. Any grocery store that had nude shoppers would not have my business. There are some things I don't care to associate with food. :p
On the other hand, it would probably diminish my appetite...:hmmmmm:

Poor 15 year old... If that was my mom, I would have shot myself by now. Even if she is a nice looking person, my *mom* is the last person I ever wanna see wearing a bikini.
Least she's setting a good example for the 15 year old. It's not like you can say much about your kid wearing belly shirts and short shorts after that.

He's worried about clumsy bachelors dropping the produce when they see the bikini, right?

What a silly thing. People in this country really are too puritanical. Sex is natural, sex is good...
But there was no sex in the grocery store! Breasts were not meant to be sexual objects, they were meant to provide nourishment for a child. Sure, that's not all they're good for now, but honestly, if I see a man not wearing a shirt, it doesn't strike me as odd, just as seeing a woman without a shirt wouldn't seem extraordinary. Hell, I've got 'em, too!
I'm all about nudity, but I can respect that many people don't like it (plus some people...*shudders*).

I feel kinda embarassed because I work for Tesco - not that store though - and in the store I work in there's nothing about shopping attire. I didn't even know it was company policy. They ask their staff to wear uniform, but I've served loads of people dressed much more provocatively than that! I guess it's down to individual managers.

I have shopped while wearing a bikini top and sarong but I live in a beach tourist area. I have seen much worse (for example an overweight middle-aged businessman on holidays walking up our main street in a g-string)
IMHO if you are comfortable enough with yourself to do it and you have the 'essentials' covered then go for it!
