A nest of ancient pirates who apparently preyed on Mediterranean shipping for nearly 300 years has emerged during excavations this summer on a remote island off the southeastern tip of the Peloponnese.

I remember reading about such places when I was studying Archaic Greece.The article is interesting in how it says piracy was quasi-legitimate.I remember reading that it was quite ok to raid and loot "Barbarian"(as in non-Greek) ships.But raiding other Greeks was frowned upon,unless a war was on.
