Thanks for posting!

My husband wants to build me an altar (ain't that sweet :) ) and was asking me about the magickal properties of woods.
I have some info in Cunningham's Magical Household, but here a lot more here.

Yes, and this is connected to Celtic/Druid Moon Signs as well, which is a system of astrology that associates with the 13 moons instead of the 12 houses and movements of the sun. Each sign has an affinity to a certain tree and its associated nature spirits.
Birch- Dec 24 to Jan 20
Rowan- Jan 21 to Feb 17
Ash- Feb 18 to March 17
Alder- Mar 18 to Apr 14
Willow- Apr 15 to May 12
Hawthorn- May 13 to June 9
Oak- June 10 July 7
Holly- July 8 yo Aug 4
Hazel- Aug 5 to Sep 1
Vine- Sept 2 to Sept 29
Ivy- Sep 30 to Oct 27
Reed- Oct 28 to Nov 24
Elder- Nov 25 to Dec 23
The personalities traits for each sign are very similar to the other system except Reed seems to have a mix of Scorpio and Sagitarian traits. I find it interesting that I am Rowan and one of my neighbours gave me a gift of a mountain ash when we first bought this property. He says he's a total atheist and doesn't beleive in such things. I say he is a wonderful gardener, working mainly with trees and shrubs, that he must have seen an :elf: or two? I tease him, and he teases me right back for beleiving as I do, but he's familiar with people who think this way, as he is originally from Wales.
Also, in some Druidry books you will find "the Battle of The Trees" where all of this was figured out and there is a hierarchy as well. I found it interesting that one of Rowan's roles is to be the protector of Willow. I have always had a strong affinity to willow trees(have a couple here and one where I grew up-would sit in it for hours...) and went as far as naming my fave pup Willow. I call her my "daughter" and our relationship is very close and unique. People do remark that she's the most "human" of dogs and sometimes I have to wonder...not being able and/or willing to have a human child...I have yet to "work" with the Rowan as it is still so teeny. Perhaps I will make a point of this tonight while my Midsummer's Eve fire is burning.
I rambled long enough- I'm just interested in trees!:p

The list is in a billion books...any magical books you find on trees or herbs probably has that list. It's pretty common stuff.

Are you looking for a book on trees? There's a really good on called Tree Medicine, Tree Magic by Ellen Evert Hoffman. I'll check the spelling of her last name when I get home tonight. She talkes about different trees & it's medicinal values as well as magical too.

Another good book is the Witches' Book of Days...can't remember the authors' names.

I like this thread. :D It's interesting that the two trees I've always loved - Pine and Willow - have associations that fit me well.

I think the saddest thing about leaving the house I'm in now will be saying goodbye to the big Pine in the backyard.
