View Full Version : Leaving incense burning...

So hubby and I have boatloads of stick incense that we love to use. Regular, store-bought stick incense. But he has this fear of leaving one burning if we leave the house/leave it unattended. He thinks that the ash that drops will somehow contain a lit ember and the house will burn down. If I leave one going and he happens to go back in the house for something, he'll stub it out and then remind me that I forgot that it was still burning.
I have no problem with leaving it burning, myself. I have never seen a stick of incense drop a red-hot ash before. If it was cone, I could understand more. If it was loose on top of a lit charcoal, I would *really* understand. But stick incense?
Meanwhile, the man has no problem with leaving candles lit while he sleeps... Not just nodding off on the couch, but actually going to bed...
So tell me, have you ever heard of a house burning down from stick incense before?

I've never had a problem with incense either. But are you sure that's not my hubby you're talking about? He cannot stand the thouht of leaving anything burning at all, it totally freaks him out. If I leave the room for a minute and have a candle burning (or even incense), he freaks out and thinks I'm trying to burn us down. Just 'cause he burned down acres of his backyard when he was a kid... :hrmm:

I never have, no...but any source that is smouldering can be a potential for fire. I understand his concerns, but I would definately have to extend that to candles burning...especially since they have a live flame (hehehe). I, for one, never leave home with my dryer on....guess it's just a "thing" for some of us...lol

Oh, I could never leave it burning either. I would imagine if something fell on it it could start a fire easily. And ack- about him going to sleep with candles on. When I had postpartum depression, I was *obsessive* about all candles being out and had to have my "fire escape plan" in my head before I went to sleep. Some of that stil lingers and I still get out of bed to check that all the candles are out.

try a smoking bottle incense burner for your stick incense. the ash drops inside the bottle, so it can't burn anything if it's still smoldering a bit.

Genious! We've seen those, and I know he thinks they're cool.. Heck, I could probably make one, if I had a dremel... But lacking a dremel, I bet a bought one would solve this! Cool cool cool! :D

I've never heard about the whole incence thing. My sisters love it when I burn the sticks.

I don't know about everyones incense holders but mine is basically a very long ash tray, i've had friends put cigs out in it before. So any ash that falls of falls into the holder so i don't worry about it. I leave them burning when I go to sleep alot, never even remotely had a problem with it.
