I have been on the phone all day trying to prevent someone slipping through the cracks. My mother-in-law, who has had more than her share of grief over the last few years, called me all upset. Her youngest son was admitted to my hospital two weeks ago with severe pneumonia and alcohol poisoning, along with severe malnutrition. He was in intensive care for a week and now is on the floor about to be discharged today. He is medically ok, but mentally he is all screwed up, doesn't know who anyone is etc. I am sure it is alcohol dementia, but he was not like this before he got sick. he may get better in a few days, but not if he is released to a homeless shelter, which is what the "social worker" said she would do.

My mother-in-law cannot take care of him 24 hours a day and she is in tears over what to do. They also told her that he had lice and they had treated it 4 times but couldn't get rid of it. So I threw a fit and called them up asking how the hell they expect a lay person to get rid of it if the medical community couldn't seem to do it. After a long conversation they agreed to keep him over night and ask for a Psych consult to see about keeping him on the drug and alcohol rehab floor until he is better prepared to succeed with recovery once he is released.

If you have the energy to spare he could use it as well as my mother-in-law. She has already lost two of her four children which is more than anyone should ever have to see. Thanks in advance everyone.

Healing energy on its way! I'm so glad they decided to try to help more. It seems like these days we're treated like cattle, herd 'em in and haul 'em out! Kudos for you guys taking a stand and seeing that he gets the treatment he needs!

Energy and reiki on the way. I hear her frustration; I went through a similar situation with a child welfare client a while back. I was shocked to find out that there was no help for him anywhere, especially since he didn't have insurance.

Is it at all possible to for her to have him civilly committed and hospitalized in a place like Laureate for a while?

They are still working on this today and haven't yet made any decisions. Did Shannon tell you I called for you yesterday..I was wracking my brain trying to come up with answers since the lovely social worker at the hospital was being less than helpful. At this point we are just awaiting a decision about what can be done if anything.

Thanks everyone for the energy and support.

Noooooo.......and he's usually such a good secretary! Actually, I didn't see him because I was out working all day, so we should probably blame Flar for being a weak link in the telephone game.

You know, having him committed is really all I can think of after learning that there were so few options when I tried to help someone with a similar problem.

 (I don't know if there's a smiley or not) I have a client that works at 12 & 12.....let me ask if she has any ideas.

ENergy and Hope. I hope that it all works out. It can be so frustrating when it seems hopeless and when people that we feel ought to help are not helping - (eg. the doctors) It sounds like this person is really in need of some TLC. Both physically and mentally.
The good thing is that so many people pull through. :)
(((energy and hugs))) to him.
