View Full Version : different types of scrying

I'm going to add a poll to this, so i can see who uses what or what people would like to try.

I have become very interested in this topic, i already read tarot, but would love to try scrying with a crystal ball, or water, or a mirror etc...

I was wondering what other people use for scrying.
I bought an intuition pack recently, which includes a deck of ink block cards, which is supposed to help you use your intuition more....
While reading the book,it tooks about the consious & unconcious mind... And that, we are all in the state of unconsious mind while asleep, it said sometimes we use it while awake and not knowing and we may see a face in crumpled up clothes or something similar, even clouds... I have ALWAYS seen faces (with different expressions) in carpets, i know it's really weird and i never really thought about it before, but apparently that is me using my unconsions & intuition, which we all have, it's just a matter of tapping into it.

I'd just like to know more information about all types of scrying, and your opinions on it.

I find a black mirror will work good, but not quite sure about all the talk on reflective facial distortion. (I find reflections to be very annoying) I also think if you become good enough, you will find you will not need any material object to scry other than maybe a cupped hand over your eye.

I put other cos i use cards but i would like to diversify and use more.
I use tarot and Oracle cards,I intend to learn to scry with crystals when i feel confident with my cards.I am also considering at some point trying with water or flame.

I chose cards. because i've only worked so far with tarot and rune cards.. i'd like to branch off into crystals though and see how they work with me..

I chose other because I use just about everything you listed with varying degrees of success.

Ofcourse divination is a hobby of mine. I'm still learning how to use pendulumns and I've no luck with a spirit board. But I guess that spirits like to skip the board and just talk because I can hear 'em. <shrugs>

But that's my 2 cents.

I rarely do scrying, but when I do it's generally with a mirror that my mom gave me. She bought this mirror when I was like 8 years old. A few years ago she was redecorating her house and gave it to me. On occasion, I do the typical "find the shapes in the clouds". Now whether one can count that as scrying when you see Odin's face is another matter.

I use a Tarot deck and Phoenix cards -- nothing else really much works for me, but then I've not really tried anything else. I have trouble clearing my mind enough to do anything else, but I think for some reason that's a defense mechanism....

I don't use my ball much yet, but I have used both sets of my cards, so I put cards. I'm going to make a committment to my ball though, this Winter...I gotta get down to it and start using it, not just admiring it, lol!

Other. I'm not accustomed to tools, and once I got the chance to try tarot cards out, I pretty much got better results by using just my mind, so that's what I've been sticking with. :)

I voted other since I have tried many different kinds and had varying degrees of success.

Using a rather large quartz crystal ball I scryed to discern my power animal, the raven, but here are a few more:

Brew some tea and open the tea packet (if you're using one) to allow the leaves into the tea. Swish it around a bit, then pour the tea out so that only the leaves remain, then see what images you can find within them. Pick an herb or flower that is linked with prophecy, intuition, etc. Mugwort for example.

Sand or dirt (graveyard dirt works best for me) on a piece of wax paper. Drizzle some holy water over it or let rain create images in the sand/dirt.

Mirrors, of course.

Pendelums, preferably with a stone or object associated with scrying or divination.

Clouds, which is incredibly easy. Lie on your back somewhere comfortable and just stare up, you'll eventually drift off into the alpha or even theta state.

A bowl or chalice full of water, especially holy water or water from a natural source. Even more so, an herbal infusion (minus the leaves unlike the above) like mugwort.

Paint. Gather up a brush, one color for each present in the rainbow as well as some white and black paint. Do each color one at a time by getting a fair amount of paint on your brush and slinging or letting it drop onto a piece of paper. Do this until each color has been used and see what you wind up with.

I have two "crystal balls", but haven't used them up to now. One is a blue glass fishing float, which I love, and the other is a 3" diameter polished green calcite sphere.

I was reorganizing under my altar the other day, and brought these two out into the moonlight in another room, and found that the calcite glows from within when lit by moonlight. It was very beautiful, and there seemed to be no reflections fromt he moon on it, just the light shining up from a small plane within the sphere. I need more time in the day so I can check that out again..

I've been using a black "mirror" with a fair amount of success. Actually, It's just a peice of acrylic plastic that I picked up from Lowe's, painted black on the one side, and set in a clear acrylic stand. When I use it I tilt it towards a wall with a blank black hanging cloth to avoid reflections. (It's really distracting to look at my own face while I'm in meditation. I just end up counting freckles...) Sometimes I use a candle set at an off angle so that the flame is reflected...

Ya, know, after I'd been using my cheap 'scrying mirror' for awhile, I discovered that it was considered inapproptiate to use plastic. Still, I was able to come up with my totem animal and answer some personal questions, so plastic can't be all that bad. I'm pleased with it. The only drawback that I've seen is that acrylic is prone to picking up scratches, and I have to treat it gently. It also might not be as capable of holding energy....who knows?

I use whatever I have available to me .. its really not all that bad. I use my cards the most, because I usually always have them on me .. no matter where I go (except at work). I'm not very effecient with my runes yet .. but I haven't used them as much. I also use my crystal ball from time to time and I'm always paying attention to the clouds ... I'm thinking about trying to read tea leaves though. Anyway. I suppose .. like I said, I use whatever I have available. Sometime I just meditate and ask the God or Goddess to guide me on my journey and show me the things that I need to see.

Brightest Blessings,

Black Mirror
Water
Witches Ball (aka crystal)
Cards
Tea leaves
Clouds

Pretty much anything available... but it seems as though when I actively TRY... it doesn't work quite so well. :P

I use water and my success depends on what it's in. My best result was 9 years ago when I used a pint glass (no markings on the bottom) I got 4 of the 6 lottery numbers and won £54

I think i'll have to start trying that one again!!

I've been seeing patterns in things since I was a little kid...Grandma had an old walnut headboard that used to just scare the snot out of me because there was a different face leering out of it every time I looked at it...got to where I wouldn't even go into that room.

Anyway, now I use kind of an odd combination: A black stone bowl of water and a candle. I put the bowl between myself and the candle so that the flame is reflected in the surface of the water. Seems to work for me...no lottery numbers yet, though :D

For scrying I have used fire , wax, water, mirror, cloud scrying, and star scrying.

At first I thought that I was just really really bad at scrying. Then I started dreamwork. This is really my scrying technique. When I am asleep definatly things come to me. When I am awake I tend to, I call it 'look into people' if that makes sense. What is inside...it works. So that is my 'other'.

i chose other mainly because i use a pendulum and the cards together a lot. strange i know but i mainly use my pendulum. the cards i have are very good as well but i get clearer answers from the swing.

i cant really explain how i use the cards and pendulum at the same time coz it varies each time i use them.

A black stone bowl of water and a candle. I put the bowl between myself and the candle so that the flame is reflected in the surface of the water. Seems to work for me...

Interesting technique - I have never used the two together.

For me, most successfully, I pay attention to my dreams and I also watch the sky and birds.

I've also had success with pyromancy (flame divination) in larger fires in a fireplace or firepit, and less successfully with candle flames and their patterns while they're burning and in carefully watching the smoke as flames extinguish.

I am working on a new technique (for me): with a large bowl of water, I place a drop of oil and stir it in a spiral with my finger. I watch the pattern formations on the surface, and am having moderate success in discerning answers as I drop in coins or very small pebbles, tiny leaves or flower petals.

I don't real use anything I can just look at something and see things, this has happened with water, fire, mirrors, rings with stone's like ruby's, and big time reflected light off anything............ But I've never really worked with it, it just happens. I prefer my vision's in dream states....................

...and how about those industrial ceilings with all the dots? I used to stare at the patterns in those for hours in school.

I had a pretty good experience last night, too, with the clouds that were illuminated by the full moon.

my favorite thing (other than my bos... maybe) is my quartz crystal. i used it to scry after picking it up one day and just all the sudden getting the urge to gaze into it, i felt almost hypnotized by it... works better than anything i've ever tried.

I voted "other."

I get my best results using my runes, pendulum (only on good days: there is an hereditary shaking condition in my family! :p), and fire, such as candles, although a bonfire or large fire is ideal.

I would love to try a black mirror though!

I've tried tea leaves and had great results! I make a cup of mugwort or peppermint tea and drink it (which helps me reach a meditative state) and then I turn the mug clockwise three times and read the leaves.

I've also had great results with scrying with my eyes closed at night while I'm in bed. I have always seen moving, wispy lines while I was trying to sleep-ever since I was little. I never knew what they were until I decided to focus on watching them instead of making them go away by shifting my concentration on something else. The wispy lines started to make images and it was truly an awesome experience!

I've just started using Tarot but once I get better with it I'd like to learn runes or the pendulum. I to have always been fascinated with fire (guess that's why I'm in the business I'm in) and have been known to get lost in the flames of a campfire/bonfire on occasion.

MM ~ Oh, boy, you asked.... :fpartay:
IMHO, scrying proper is seeing a vision in a clear depth, NOT patterns in ink blots, tea leaves, clouds, wood grain, etc. Any one of these may be a perfectly good oracle but they are not scrying.
My favorite speculum is my 3" smokey quartz sphere, but I use everything, and my next experiment will be a nice blue Luna di Luna bottle filled with water, 3 pinches of sea salt, and 9 drops of camphor oil.
Bowls are difficult for me. I've yet to get a vision in a bowl.

wow - you needed an "all of the above" answer =P

cards was what I put as it's my most used method, clouds would have been second choise, than crystal ball, than stones

I live on the beach, so other answers include: waves, sand, shells, seaweed, japanese glass fishing balls, driftwood and pretty much everything else the ocean tosses in my path

flowers, bird songs, frog crirps, I don't know, probably, you name it I read it

That I can recall, I've scried using smoke, fire, water (either flowing or with dye drops being added - I can't water scry in still water), wax, clouds, stones (from crystals to boulders), abstract images (including those algorithms some music programs use to produce patterns), wind-blown grass and trees, dust motes in light, falling snow, and probably some other things that I'm not recalling at the moment.

I believe scrying isn't just a visual phenomena. I have heard sounds and voices in nature noises and ambient music. I have also felt sensations as I gently moved my fingertips along various surfaces - for instance, clay or the wall of a house.

While playing with some watercolors (not good enough to actually call it painting -- lol) I dropped the paintbrush on the paper and it made a perfect image of goat-footed, pipe-playing Pan...

Don't know if that counts as scrying, but it was interesting.

Wasn't trying to scry, didn't even consider that what I was doing might be considered scrying, but once when I was slowly turning a quartz crystal in front of candlefire, I saw a series of detailed and crystal-clear figures within the stone: Egyptian, Roman, male, female, Native American, etc, etc. even animals.

The crystal wasn't much to look at -- no special shape, chipped and worn... Its looks alone wouldn't have attracted anybody, but it was my favorite for a long time.
