I'll take a stab at Kunapipi ... or do I have to go another tribe?

Hmmmmmmmm, then I guess it probably isn't Kunapipi then?

All I know about her is that a rainbow snake heralded her arrival, but not that she was one....

OK, here is one...

I am a god who lives under the sea and drags down the dead, from Eskimo mythology.

Merrie
June 22nd, 2001, 09:45 AM
Do you happen to be Aipaloovik? Maybe?

Lilu
June 22nd, 2001, 10:21 AM
I am not Aipaloovik, sorry!

I have a daughter named Sedna, and because of me she is now Queen of the Deep, mistress of death and life.

loopy
June 22nd, 2001, 10:40 AM
Arg. Haven't been able to find it. All I found was that there was also an Inuit Sedna, whose father was a widower, and that one of them had two vaginas that ate people.

Lilu
June 22nd, 2001, 10:59 AM
Hmmmmm, you know I'm starting to think that there are several similar deities. And I'm not sure if Sedna and Inuit Sedna are the same, but the guy was a widower I think, according to what I read.......... want me to try another one? This might be hard.

OK, here's what I read about him...

When his daughter Sedna ran off and married a seabird man, she ended up being really unhappy. Her father put her in his kayak and intended to take her back to the human world. On their way back the seabird people sought redemption, and caused a big storm. The father, realising he couldn't fight them, pushed Sedna back into the sea. He ended up chopping off her fingers and her arms when she clung to the boat so she would go back into the sea. She drowned and became the Queen of the Deep, giver of life and death.

The father, himself lived there too; some versions of the myth say that, hoping the seabirds would think Sedna dead, he allowed her back into the kayak and returned home. But she hated him thereafter and cursed her dogs to eat his hands and feet; the earth opened and swallowed them. In any case, He served Sedna by grabbing dead human souls with his maimed hand and bringing them home.

Let me know if you want to move on, this is a lot harder than I thought it might be! Sorry!

Here's a simple one.

Welsh Goddess of death and renewal.

Lilu
June 22nd, 2001, 02:33 PM
Cerridwen?

Mairwen
June 22nd, 2001, 02:39 PM
Nope.

(fwiw, in my trad, Kerridwen is the All Mother, the Ninefold One ~ not just Crone)

(edited to add: I have difficulty, therefore, seeing her as only Crone)

Lilu
June 22nd, 2001, 03:16 PM
Ahhhhh,... ok... :)

Then maybe it's Rhiannon?

Mairwen
June 22nd, 2001, 06:14 PM
Nope. She can be. But this isn't the one I'm thinking of.

To make it a bit more simple.

This Goddess got a big case of self-importance and sank her island.

loopy
June 23rd, 2001, 07:08 PM
 I am stumped. Stumped I am.

Mairwen
June 23rd, 2001, 07:58 PM
She had three sisters who guarded the sacred well on her island. The well was called The Eye of the Deep.

Mairwen
June 24th, 2001, 03:07 PM
Still stuck? Her flower is the daisy, and sometimes she is depicted as or with a snow-white owl. Some see her with blonde hair, while others see her with black hair. Most agree that her eyes are her most striking feature ~ they're rectangular in shape (betraying her Atlantean roots), and vibrant blue in color.

Mairwen
June 25th, 2001, 12:47 AM
Her name means "The Silver Wheel". :D

Lilu
June 25th, 2001, 08:17 AM
hi, hi... I'm back - hope everyone had a great weekend!

Is it Arianrhod?

Mairwen
June 25th, 2001, 01:11 PM
Yes Ma'am! :D

Lilu
June 25th, 2001, 01:25 PM
*grin* Well that was certainly a challenge Mairwen! hehe Interesting :) I don't think I've ever heard of her referred to as a goddess of renewal and death. Then again, I don't really know much about the Welsh pantheon, oh well - I know a lot more now! :) I think the thing that got me was the island sinking, I've never heard of that! hehe

OK... new question...

Who Am I?

This seasonal divinity lived in the last sheaf of grain harvested in a year, and the woman who bound it would bear a child that year. *name* passed into Russian folk legend, a witchlike woman who rowed through the air in a mortar, using a pestle for her oar, sweeping the traces of her flight from the air with a broom.

Mairwen
June 25th, 2001, 01:52 PM
The story is that Atlantis (Arianrhod's families homeland) was sunk by someone "messing around" with the Casket of Spells. This person was able to escape from the island, with the Casket, and was found by Hu the Mighty. Hu slayed the person and hid the Casket. Don told her daughter (Arianhrod) where the Casket was hidden, lest it fall into the wrong hands again. Arianrhod took it to her island, Caer Arianrhod (or the Aurora Borealis, some say). On her island was a sacred well called The Eye of the Deep, wherein were contained all the world's secrets; the well was guarded by Arianrhod's sisters. Arianrhod being herself learned how to use the Spells in the Casket of Spells and accidently unleashed their powers. Combined with the knowledge and power of the sacred well, this caused her island to sink.

Baba Yaga???
I'd never heard of her being a goddess, but I know her as the witch...

Lilu
June 25th, 2001, 03:20 PM
Yes, it was Baba Yaga.

I found that passage on a website, which said it was quoted from one of Patricia Monaghan's books. So either Monaghan has it wrong, or the source is wrong, but someone considers her a divinity in some force *grin* Of course, Christianity has a long history of taking the goddess and turning her into an evil witch to be scorned *grin*

Your turn :)

Lilu

Merrie

A triple goddess known in northern europe whose russian counterpart happens to be (guess who...) Baba Yaga. The brothers Grimm mention her in her crone form as the Queen of Winter (Frau *****)
I have a little story about her...

"Destined to marry Holler, King of Winter and Frost, he tested her with a riddle to be sure of *****'s worthiness. She had to come to his palace neither naked nor clothed, neither riding nor walking, neither alone nor with companions, in neither light nor darkness. ***** answered by arriving wrapped in a fishing net, sitting on a donkey with one toe dragging on the ground, surrounded by twenty-four wolves at twilight."
--from Encyclopedia Mythica

Good Luck!

I love Baba Yaga. :D Did you ever read Enchantment by Orson Scott Card?(You Should!!!) It's based on Russian Fairy tales ...It got me hooked on Baba and her stories.

Devi(parvati), Sri(lakshimi) and Sarasvati?
those are probably wrong. I know they must be the consorts of Vishnu, Brahama and Shiva...But, this is hard!!!! My friend is hindu, she was born in india...I'll have to see if she knows.

Lilu
June 29th, 2001, 07:39 AM
I will have to go with Merrie, all I can find is info on the god triad of Shiva, Vishnu and Brahama - so I guess the best guess is with their consorts... hehehe I will keep looking. :)

I'll give you another entry on her to clarify...

""The Unfettered". Hindu mother goddess. She was self-formed and the mother of the sun and moon gods, Mitra and Varuna. She is the unlimited
space of sky beyond the far east, the brilliant light from which the gods sprang. She clears obstacles, protects, and solves problems."

Hope I'm not inviting myself in. I'd have to agree with Lilu. I think that it's Aditi. I think I read somewhere that she was the mother of all the deities.

Lilu
July 5th, 2001, 05:47 PM
No invite necessary! Just jump right on in Neptune! Welcome to the game. Now we just have to wait for Merrie to confirm...

All's cool here. I like the sound of this type of trivia. Hope you had a good holiday, and I hope things here get on the move! There's only two good things about working when you're a teenager; the money, and the getting home after work and doing whatever you want. Oh well. C-ya.

I am a river god of Macedonia, son of Oceanus and Tethys. Father of Pelegon by Peloboea.

Who am I?

Lilu
July 7th, 2001, 06:17 PM
hehehehe Not much of a challenge there? Just 300 thousand offspring of Oceanus and Tethys? *grin*

My guesses are as follows:

1. Achelous
2. Alpheus
3. Asopus

If none of the above, I will look again *grin*

Yipe! I'm so sorry! I got myself banned from the computer (Didn't do enough laundry or something...Mom bans me from the computer as often as possible because she hates that I come HERE. She's getting over it.)

And yes, Neptune and Lilu, the answer was Aditi-which happens to be the name of one of my best friends. She's hindu, and she didn't even know her namesake!
