What is smudging, and how do you do it, and what materials are needed, and when can it be done?

I've never used smudging. But I believe it's basically a form of cleansing an area. Usually it's used with a bundle of sage which is pretty common bundled up. I beleive you burn it and use the smoke for cleansing whatever.

Yes, you smudge by burning a bundle of herb. A common smudge is sage, though there are many others. You can do it anytime, and yes it's usually done for cleansing an area. :)

I smudge often, as a cleansing ritual. I use it to cleanse altar tools, my house, my car, etc. Make sure the windows are open so that the smoke from the sage bundle (you don't keep it aflame, it just smokes like incense) carries out with it all the negative and unwanted energies.
I usually chant something as well, something about only those presences asked should stay, all others who mean harm and are unasked leave, negative energy leave so that only positive remains, I cleanse this in the name of the Goddess, etc.
HTH! :)

I did try that once but I have yet to find an herb to use that does not send either mine or my hubby's allergies bonkers..

try useing a mixture of lavender blossoms, and finely ground corn meal. It is an old Navaho cleansing. Use it in a censor hung from some vine or hemp with some charcoal. circle the room wittershins. Bless the ingrediants first
Leave some of the ashes under the windows and bury some outside the door. It will shield your home until the next rain.

It will shield your home until the next rain.
Which, if you live in Florida, like me, is about every couple hours :p

Also with smudging burning sage is supposed to make the evil spirits sick and go away and sweetgrass will attact spirits of any kind so you should either burn them togeother or sage before sweetgrass.
I also recommend Denise Linn's book, Creating a Sacred Space. She has recomendation for clearing an area uses different types of things including bells and drums.

I'm allergic to everything chemical so I clean my house with vinegar and water and then smudge with lavender and sage. Then I mix equal parts cornmeal and salt and draw a protective circle around my house with it. I also use the cornmeal and salt around my car when getting ready for a long trip, for protection.

That's really interesting I've never ran across anything about using cornmeal. I will have to try this.

The cornmeal and salt riual is from the Native Americans. Most of my rituals involve something from that and Pennsylvania Dutch. It's just the way I was raised; My Great Grandmother was the Medicine Woman of the Blackfoot Sioux tribe and both Grandmothers were Pennsylvania Dutch Pow-Wows! I guess you really can say it's in my blood!

bells are awesome, very powerfull in the removal of unwanted spirits, they hate the sound of bells, it hurts them somehow. Firecrackers are supposed to work well too, but I havent used them indoors yet. Heh heh heh

I use a bundle of white sage and sweetgrass and go throughout the house. It's amazing the difference in the "energy" after a good smudging. If you have respiratory problems though I don't know how good an idea smudging would be....I wheeze pretty much for the next 4 or 5 days after I do one. Just a side note.....sage smells a bit like marijuana, and you might want to avoid using if it would be misconstrued. You might also want to turn off the smoke alarm if it's particularly sensitive...having the alarm going off sort of distracts your concentration.
