During a discussion on ethics in another Druid forum, most people were saying that magic for personal gain had no place in Druidry and magic should be used for greater goals such as healing the Earth. What do you think?

Wouldnt healing the earth bring some kind of personal gain as well?

 What's wrong with personal gain? You can't very well heal the Earth if you're not taking care of yourself.

:) Exactly my point. Thats why I said that. I have never understood the mentality that magic should not be used for personal gain. What the heck else would you use it for?!

She-Arna -

I have seen this argument presented on many occassions. I personally feel that it is an unbalanced viewpoint. Life is duality, both light and dark, giving and selfishishness. The line that we as humans should be walking is one of balance. To constantly give without at times takeing is unhealthy...hell its unnatural. This is not to say that healing the earth is a bad thing by any means...its just that sometimes you need to do things for yourself. And...doing things for yourself is not only natural...its healthy.

Again...this is just one persons point of view...take it for what its worth.

I am not a druid, but I agree with the guys on this one. Somewhere along the way, society as a whole decided it was best to play the part of the selfless martyr and that is sad. Yes, we should strive to help others and humanity in general, but we are a part of that as well. We have to keep oursleves healthy and such to help others. Personal gain is the best motivator.

I have to say I agree with all of you. I have no idea how anyone could hope to heal something as vast and wondrous as the Earth if they can't even do something nice for themselves. :)
