Hi all! Since stopping my antidepressants I'm gaining weight, FAST!! I have always struggled with my weight and it's getting unhealthy. I have trouble with snacking and boredom eating, emotional eating....the list goes on. So, I'm wondering if anyone can help me find a good herbal that will help suppress my appetite? I was thinking the herbal dexatrim, but I really don't think that it's all that herbal...I haven't looked at the ingredients!!
Thank you all!!

The best thing that I have found is Young livng (brand) Peppermint oil. You only have to inhale it to curb your appetite and lessen over-eating. It is an organic oil so it is very natural :)

I tried the herbal dexatrim, it didn't work. Try this. For two weeks eat nothing but meat, raw veggies and water. Nos ugar, no carbs. I lost about 15 pounds. You can't do this for more than two weeks. You will go to the hospital. You can however, do this every few months. It REALLY WORKS!!!!!!!

I have heard that sniffing vanilla extract or pods (the real stuff, not artificial) can help to supress sweet cravings...

I did the low carb thing back in March. I did Atkins for 3 wks. It was all I could take to do it for that long. I lost 30 pounds, but I couldn't handle eatting that way. I'm going to look into doing the South Beach Diet soon.

I've been trying to do the Weight Watchers point system. It really works, I've found. But it's a matter of sticking to it, as is everything!! Honestly, I hate diets and try to always avoid them. I've always found that no matter what the diet, you gain the weight back. It's a matter of changing eating habits. And I'm a snacker!! ***types as she reaches for some more chips and salsa!!***That being said, I would pray to the goddess every day for them to bring back Phen Phen if I thought it would do any good. Before my wedding I used it and lost SO MUCH WEIGHT!! It was FABULOUS!! Then after the wedding we decided to try to get pregnant so I went off of it and then sometime after that they took it off the shelves. http://www.mysticwicks.com/images/smilies/crying.gif (http://www.mysticwicks.com/misc.php?do=getsmilies#)http://www.mysticwicks.com/images/smilies/crying.gif (http://www.mysticwicks.com/misc.php?do=getsmilies#)http://www.mysticwicks.com/images/smilies/crying.gif (http://www.mysticwicks.com/misc.php?do=getsmilies#)http://www.mysticwicks.com/images/smilies/crying.gif (http://www.mysticwicks.com/misc.php?do=getsmilies#) I didn't gain the weight back after getting off of it, it was getting pregnant that did that for me plus A LOT!! BRING BACK PHEN PHEN!!!

The problem is partly the food we eat, but more or less, its our lack of activity that causes many Americans to fight the overweight issue. I don't remember how long ago it was, but I'm sure if you do a search on the internet, you can find it. Yes, Atkins works, I've done it .. and its not so bad anymore ... they have Atkin's ice cream, brownies, muffins, breads and what not. When I was on the Atkin's diet, I was also going to the gym 2-3 times a week and doing an hour to an hour and a half work out. If you set aside even thirty minutes a day for an excerise work out, you'll feel ten times better .. I can tell the days that I dont work out compared to the days that I do. I take my own homemade lunches to work .. usually fruit and a sandwich of whatever lunchmeat I have around at the time, and maybe one or two reese's peanut butter cup minatures. I drink one thing of soda a day, and the rest is water. The rest of my meals, I make at home and I very seldom eat fast food. Once a week I have a bowl of ice cream from Coldstone Creameries and I'm losing the weight slowly, but I now have access to a gym for free so I'll be utilizing the indoor swimming pool. Yay me!

Seabreeze is right. Weightwatchers teaches you to eat the right way (portion sizes, balanced foods). WW isnt a fad diet like all the others, its a way of life. Remember that fad diets may make you lose weight quickly but they wont keep it off.

I tried the herbal dexatrim. I do not recommend it at all - I was so sick to my stomach when I was taking it, and very shaky. (I didn't eat though - but I don't think that was the point)

Do you think Peppermint tea (or anything else with peppermint in it) would have the same effect? :dinnertim

It did me the same way...

To be a big gal, I really do not eat much at all.
Sometimes I even forget to eat...

My biggest problem is being in pain and not moving as much as I should to keep from hurting...
But I am active. Can't stand to be still very long.

i used a product called 'Extreme Power Plus"
I wanted something for more energy, and it works for me.

The thing about dieting is that something may work for you and something else may not.

Do you think Peppermint tea (or anything else with peppermint in it) would have the same effect?
I do not see why not, since the sense of smell is what is being effected...

Peppermint tea has the same effect as the peppermint oil. Like Flora said, it is based more upon the smell than it is on anything else. Supposedly drinking the right amount of water a day suppresses the appetite too (for someone that weighs 150lbs, they need to drink at least 72 ounces of water a day =\
i want to say the dr told me add a glass for every ten lbs over 150

ok i know this isn't herbal but it's really good and works.

empower a piece of amethyst for appetite control and always carry it with you. When i first bought my amethyst it did that, only i let other energies into it and it was useless. So empower it specifically for that purpose and it WORKS! It keeps you from eating to much when you eat and when you shouldn't eat, like right after you eat a meal, you won't be hungry until time for the next meal.

What happens is your stomach will shrink and you will get used to eating that little and it becomes a habit.

... interesting... .. so how exactly would one do that?

okay...as far as herbs go, there are a couple that may be helpful.
kelp helps to speed up your metabolism by supplying iodine to your thyroid. (don't mix it with thyroid meds, though.)

gymnema sylvestra helps to cut sugar cravings, and also actually inhibits the amount of sugar your body absorbs.

chromium, the mineral, can be helpful with balancing blood sugar, which can lessen sugar cravings.

gurana is a good source of natural energy, and it doesn't spike you up and crash you down like ephedra. (ephedra is dangerous stuff, imo. i wouldn't touch the stuff, ever.)

there's a new one on the market, hoodia, which helps to "trick" your body into believing it's full, thereby lessening the amount you eat.

all these herbs are meant to be used as part of a program *only* . there is no miracle herb/supplement. you need to exercise, eat well, sleep well, etc. (if you don't sleep soundly, you won't reach that rem state where your body metabolizes most efficiently. try darkening your room with curtains, turn the digital alarm clock away from you, or wear a sleep mask.)

and, the infamous disclaimer: you need to do your own research and come to your own conclusions about what is good for your body. and please let your doctor know you're planning to take herbs before you take them, especially if you're on meds.

If you have problems with the times that you eat and the reasons that you eat then you need to address those. You need to replace eqating with something else. I am taking the weight off VERY slowly. I have about 60 pounds that I would like to lose and I am down 10 or 12. I started working at it mid October. I agree with the person who wrote about exercise. If you want to increase your metabolism then you need to increase your muscle mass. This decreases your body fat percentage and you burn more calories in everything that you do. I think that muscle takes three times as many calories to maintain as fat does.

If you are on anti depressants then I would be VERY careful about the stimulants you use. You may be looking at major interactions there. I love peppermint tea so I will nto discount that at all. It is wonderful for sinuses for me. It is also good on my throat and I am an operator so I talk all night. I also like the idea of the amethyst. Amethyst is a healing stone and it is useful for so many things.

If you want to change your life you will nto do that with ephedra or any other weight loss supplement. You do that with dedication, education, and a good support system.

No diet works unless you exercise. Bummer I know but get off your arse and walk for 30 minutes the harder you work to lose the weight the less likely you'll be to toss it out the window and gain it back. stick to the food pyramid 1200 cal a day. no diet just healthy. Good luck. I hate losing weight and it seems like all of us have to do it at one point or another. Blessed be.

ok this is the diet that I'm on, its heart healthy, recommended by my doctor, it works fast and its really not that hard to do..

you have to eat three meals a day. no skipping.
for breakfast
2 eggs 2 pieces of crisp (leanish) bacon
1 glass unsweetened grapefruit juice.
eat until you're full.

lunch
2 glasses unsweetened grapefruit juice
some meat
some kind of veggies (salad, whatever)
again, eat until you're full.

dinner
half glass unsweetened grapefruit juice
some meat/fish
red or green veggies or the salad
eat until you're full

I know it doesnt really sound like a diet... but it works. for five days you lose no weight, and then on the fifth day you lose about 5 pounds. and every day there after you lose about a pound and a half. stick to the diet 12 days, and then take two days off it and eat whatever the hell you want. believe it or not you have to have some fatty intake....
no snacking or eating between meals on this diet either, thats the hard part.. ummm try to cut the sugars as much as you can, save those for your two days off..... basically you could lose 30 pounds in 3 weeks, or close to it.

hope I helped some...

I try to tell everyone do not buy from Young Living you can get quality Peppermint oil for much cheaper other places. I hate that place, One of their moron sellers told my dad he can rub any oil on his skin. Yes I contacted them and gave a major complaint.

Thats the Mayo Clinic Diet. Most Doctors dont encourage it. You can find lots of info and a better example at this website:
