I have been looking for what seems like eons, for a start of Belladona for my garden. Does anyone know where I might optain one?

It's also called deadly nightshade and seems to grow best where it's not wanted.

You can try asking at your local garden centre to order one for you. If you don't have any luck there, try www.richters.com

They're in Ontario, Canada. I've ordered lots of hard to find herbs from them.

Excellent Wildchild, thank you for that post! I'm in Ontario myself and am seriously thinking of resorting to Belladonna or some other such herb to help conquer a raging case of insomnia. Do you know of any other herb (other than the obvious camomile , can't stand the stuff) that is good for relaxing? It's not that I have a problem falling asleep, it's staying asleep for more than three or four hours that I have a problem with.

Grateful for any help!

I could be wrong, but I think Belladonna is only deadly if you overdose on it...a small amount in tea is good for sleep...someone please correct me if I'm wrong!

Valerian root tea - use 1 tsp of dried valerian root & steep for 15 mins, drink shortly before bedtime. You might want to mix it with other herbs if you don't like the scent of valerian. Maybe try mixing it with lemon balm. The two herbs work well together as a sleep aid.

Another thing to try is an herb pillow. Mix in 1/2 cup lavender & 1/2 cup hops. Make a little pillow square & fill with the mixture. Sew up the opening & tuck the little pillow inside your pillowcase.

Edited to say that belladona can cause paralysis of the central nervous system if used incorrectly. Try other herbal alternatives first. Definitely NOT to be used without medical supervision.

Thank you Wildchild for the link, it looks like it may be a winner:-) Belladona is one of my favorite plants to grow(maybe because it is soooo easy), and has been very useful to me in the past. Since relocating to KY, I haven't found any.....I couldn't uproot the one I had in WA.
Someone said it grows wild here? does anyone know?

I don't want to ramble, but on a side note: some of you expressed concern over usage of this particular plant. You are absolutely right, it can and will cause death and/or other serious problems if used incorrectly. A little advice, if you are unsure, or flat out don't know, stay away, and try an alternative, less harmful substitute.

Thanx Again Wildchild:D

Lots of things grow wild in Kentucky. Go to your local library and look for "Wildflowers and Plants of Kentucky" and other native books. :D

Try www.peruvian-journey.com. They have interesting stuff, and despite all the misspellings and grammar errors, have never sent me the wrong thing. However, if they are out of stock on something, they tend to go ahead and send a substitute of their choice without checking with you...even so, I have always appreciated the substitutes when I got them. The people there seem fairly knowledgeable.
