I acquired a small bottle of hyssop essential oil awhile ago on a whim (I was actually after rose oil, but I tend to impulse shop), and I absolutely love the smell of it! At this point, my direct contact with it has really been nil - I haven't actually used it for anything yet.

I do have oil and herb resource books, but I haven't worked with new oils in a long time and I have no idea where they are ...

So, this is a question in two parts:

1) How safe is it?

2) What are it's properties?

And what of propogation? A friend gave me a cutting and I've done all the usual things that work for me but it seems to be half dead. I'm really not sure it's gonna make it (take root).

Any ideas?

Hi Dria El, can I ask you some questions? How long have you been trying to root the hyssop? What are the usual things you did? How big is the cutting?

Of course! It's been probably a couple of weeks at least. I put it in dirt and am keeping it damp (ie. combining the rooting in water method with the rooting in dirt method). The cutting is a couple of feet long. The part that's in the dirt is (of course) stripped of its leaves. That help?

Because it is such a long cutting, it's trying to provide nutrients to the whole plant as well as trying to root. To put less stress on the hyssop, try cutting an eight inch piece off & try rooting that. Strip off most of the bottom leaves except for maybe about 6 - 8 leaves at the very top. This will leave it enough leaves to bring in sunlight & not put a burden on the cutting. Try putting that in a small jar of water with a tiny bit of plant food for a few weeks or until you see little tiny hairslet (new roots). Then plant that in the dirt & keep it watered well.
