Never leave your candles unattended. It's best to use votive candles inside glass containers which are made for this purpose. If you can get some larger, heavier containers, so much the better. Votive candles, or the short, chubby, white candles from the the supermarket will fit entirely inside some glass holders, sometimes with a lot of room to spare, depending on the type of holder. You can try a housewares store or gift store for containers. This protects your candles from getting knocked over by the wind, brushing a sleeve, or mixing with curtains blown by the wind. Be aware of the wind in your area and the position of the candles within your home. In this kind of holder, you can probably leave the room for a few minutes to use the bathroom but otherwise don't leave the candles burning when you are out of the room. Watch out for cats and children knocking candles over.
A fire extinguisher is a really good idea, too, as the story below shows. The enclosed recent story from the Energy section is sobering. There are a lot of fire spirits going around right now too. Not just in California but other places as well---We were having a Samhain Ceremony, and after closing the circle, (At two AM) we forgot to douse the god and goddess candles. ______ and _____ went upstairs to change their clothes, and I went out on the front porch to grab a breath of fresh air. I was outside two minutes . . . . Then I turned around, and saw the livingroom engulfed in flames. ______ ran down the stairs, and grabbed the fire extinguisher, and put out the flames, while calling "_____, get the kids out..NOW". and told me to stay outside. _____ rushed out with the kids, and we wrapped them in whatever blankets/jackets we could find in the kitchen... and tried our best to comfort the terrorized children. The whole thing, was maybe 3 minutes long. From the time the flames caught, to the time they were extinguished, and we were on the front porch with the firemen. The livingroom is heavily damaged. They've lost alot of their possessions, but luckily, nobody was hurt. And there wasn't even much smoke inhalation to speak of. This is a young, and often financially struggling family...______ and _____ are my brother and sister in heart. They've been there for me in the most amazing ways, and I love them from the bottom of my heart. They will be facing difficult times ahead, with all the clean up, and replacing that needs to be done. Their kids are very scared now, and of course, both the parents feel "guilty" for leaving the candles unattended.
Please pray that the Goddess comforts, and strengthens them during their time of need...
We are however, truly thankful that the fire was not worse...and most of all, that nobody was hurt.
If the moderators think this thread is insensitive they could remove it. And if so, I would sincerely apologize. I've always felt that people should burn candles within safe, stable containers.
