Heres a thread about making your own runes:

That might help you, or you can browse the Dreams and Divination section.
You can make them out of whatever you want though, I think someone in that thread said they know of people who have used rocks and markers. :)

I've decided to make some runes myself. I was really stumped as to what to use being REAL short on $$$. In the otherrunes thread I saw Litha posted a recipe on how to make them from flour salt and water with food coloring..VERY cool, easy, and most everyone has those things laying around. Then I realized *duh* that I have an apple tree on the side of my house..if I can find my hack-saw and sand paper I'm making them tonite :D
I really don't think it matters what you use..as long as you relate to it. I have my mind set on making a set out of deer antlers, and am lucky enough to have a avid hunter for a dad with lots of racks at his house, but I think whatever you can get your hands on, and put your energy into and really relate to is good for you. ;)

A friend of mine made hers out of wood... she found a stick that was nice and long and a pretty uniform width, measured it so they were even, cut the stick, and let the pieces dry, then carved the runes into the wood. It turned out really well. I'm planning to try it soon... I just have to find a stick!! (In AZ, for some reason, its not that easy)
Good luck!!

I strongly recommend wood. If you look at the old texts (I think Tacitus wrote about how they were made in ancient times), they were generally made on a piece of wood cut from a fruit-bearing tree.

Most people say wood... but I think that stones also work well... and if there is a material that you're particularly drawn to, I'd say go for it. :) I've found in my experiences that what works for one person may not always work for another, and that you may find something that someone else would never think of using... and it may work great for you.
I just made a set out of river stones... and would like to make a set out of wood, but I have to work with what I have access to right now. :)
(Not very helpful, sorry!)
Ha... I just realized I already replied to this. LOL.

I made mine a while ago out of wood chips from my elementary school playground. When I was going to school there, we had a wood playground, and rumor was that when it was replaced with the brightly colored plastic thing that they used the old playgound for the woodchips they put down. I live about a block from the school, so I walked over there one day and found a dozen or so flat chips of about the same size and I took them home and used "magic" markers to write the runes on them. They've worked extremely well for me in predicting the past...that is, telling me what problems my subconscious is still dealing with that I have to work on before I can move on. They don't work too well for the future, but that could be because of me and my inability to move on from some things or simply because they came from a part of my past...I don't know...and I'm starting to ramble on so I think I'll stop.
