I bought a lavender plant from Shop Rite last week. It didn't look all that happy but it was calling my name, so I brought it home. (Now that we are not taking in stray cats, I am finding plants calling to me instead :)) I repotted it and have it out front in the sun. But half of the plant is dying, the stalks are going brown and hard. It has some flowers but they aren't opening. Please help!!!

I also purchased a Lavender plant from Walmart, and it is doing the same thing -- its brown and dry. hmmmm.

What kind of Lavender do you have? You guys know lavender doesn't need much water. Are you watering to much?

Sunday's Child, I proabably am watering it too much. I do have a tendency to do that. I once killed a cactus that way. :(

Mysty, maybe we should blame it on the fact we got it at a place like Walmart and Shop Rite- Inferior quality!LOL!

Merry Meet....sounds like you are definitely overwatering your lavender. Lavender requires extremely good drainage. I plant my lavender in raised beds (about twelves inches high) and use a sandy topsoil...amend with a little compost and a sprinkling of agriculture lime. Water sparingly...provide lots of sunshine and you should be good to go.

If you purchased your lavender in a walmart or other discount stores...you probably have "Munstead" or "Hidcote". If you get out to herb nurseries...or even shop online...look for "Provence" or "grosso"...its beautiful and huge...and oh so aromatic.

Hope this helps.

Herbally yours,

I had a Lavender plant once. I bought it from a farmers' market. It died. Me so sad.

Blessed Be!
