Now..in the Greek Pantheon, the triple Goddess aspect of the moon is Artemis, Selene and Hecate..the maiden mother and crone. Who is who to you? It seems popular belief is that Artemis is the maiden, Selene the mother, and Hecate the crone..I have a hard time buying that. To me it makes more sense for Artemis to be crone, and Hecate maiden. Is Hecate seen as crone due to her being a dark Goddess? Or perhaps the lore that surrounds her changed her into a haggish crone? I was of the impression that she is around the same age/stage as Persephone who is a maiden..so how could she be the crone in the triple Goddess aspect? Anyone else have opinions or knowledge on this?

Personally, as I see both Hekate and Persephone as the Crone aspect due to their connections to the Underworld and Hades. I don't think that age necessarily has anything to due with any of the aspects, but more what the goddess is representative of.
So personally I would group them as Artemis-Maiden, Selene-Mother, and Hekate-Crone. As for the grouping that includes Persephone as one of the triple goddesses, for me it go as follows Kore-Maiden, Demeter-Mother, and Persephone-Crone. I know you didn't ask that last part, but hey why not throw it in.

The Greeks didn't have a triple moon goddess. The concept was the creation of Robert Graves and made it's first appearance in The White Goddess.
The Greeks never considered Hecate a crone and from what I've read the first mention of her as a crone or hag is from some late Roman writings. http://www.islandnet.com/~hornowl/HekateArticle.html

Hmm, in that type of aspect, I would have considered:
Maiden: Kore, Mother: Demeter, Crone: Peresphone

i used to think this too, and Graves certainly popularized the concept, perhaps even being responsible for the inclusion of the MMC idea into Wicca.
but i was reading Apuleius's 'Golden Ass' (circa 1st century CE) awhile back and found a very interesting reference to what can only be considered the MMC Trinity. in fact we discussed this in TYRRHENUS's really cool thread on Proserpine...

this is true.
in fact there are NO depictions of Hekate in Greek art or literature where She is shown as anything but a young woman, nor was She seen as an exclusively underworld Goddess. no mention of any Crone either. even Apuleius was writing from a later Roman perspective.
but nothing perpetuated this idea of Hekate as the 'Queen of the Hags' more than Shakespeare's 'MacBeth'... thanks alot Bill!
