It is possible to have a so-called mythological being as a familiar isn't it? I believe mine is a dragon. I've seen him around quite a bit in the past several months.

Mine seem to have disappeared. Why would that happen?
If you have absorbed the lessons or message or skills it was trying to impart to you, it may move on or stop traveling with you. They just kind of move in to the background or become someone you might encounter along the side of the road rather than a constant companion that walks beside you.
I don't think they disappear completely though. It may take time, years even, but you will probably encounter yours again.

I had been having visits from the hummingbird lately.
Hummingbird: Freedom of movement, energy, tireless, joy, accomplishing things that are said to be impossible, finding the joy in living and learning from your life experience.
I've been on a soul journey these past months. I've connected back to the earth more now that we're moved back to the countryside. I feel more free and filled with energy and I just keep going with landscaping and gardening and never tire of it. It's like I gain energy the more I work with the plants and soil. It's been a real purifying time for me.
Things are a much slower pace here and I can really take in the beauty of nature the sounds of the water and green trees, birds singing and with the dream I had the other night I'd say the message was I am on the right track gaining spiritual energy more pure now then it has been for years. Though I don't feel my journey is over yet.
It was nice to see the hummingbird tell me I'm on track.
(I enjoy reading everyone's posts here!)

This thread is so interesting!
I have a wolf just like every-bloody-body else  and an owl that showed up around the same time I started working with Blodeuwedd. The wolf generally seems to be about teaching me to be true to myself and not be faint of heart...the owl is for learning about myself and the world around me...and slowing down and chilling out, observing and not making hasty or foolish decisions :)

hi! Real quick, Maudlin parrot stands for:
Use of language
Mockery
Pair bonding
Brings rain
Guidance and wisdom to think before speaking. Hope that helps a bit..
Now, my guides thru meditation, and finally accessing and seeing one are:
East: Cougar, female name Hannah..walks beside ner is a small humming bird..
South: A beaver, male, dont know his name yet...walks in front of him is a silver fox.
West: Wolf, male, no name yet, and walking beside him is a brown bear...the most watchful of my guides at most times!
North: MusK ox, no other info as yet..but my dragon covering us all from the rear is Male, name Planeon.
my above guide is a Bobcat named Lois, my below...is my birth totem clan..a thunderbird...my inside guides are: the Holy Spirit, an Owl, and suprisingly, my birth totem...a red tailed hawk!
Oh, also a human female from 1700's named Amelia, and met my gg,grandfather on one meditation and we did a soul-retrival journey together.
Sounds nutz huh? But the pic they gave me to paint? Cant wait...and their always there for me! Kim

Lately I've been having dreams about certain animals that aren't my totems. Hawks have appeared to me, also Coyote showed up. I remember being really excited to see both those animals. Last night the dream I had was so real. I adopted another kitten and took care of it. I believe that they are trying to send me a message. I have a strong connection to cats and the Egyptian Goddess Bast. Maybe that's why Cat keep appearing to me.

This may win me the "Well, duh" award for the year, but...once you have an animal guide/totem/what-have-you, what do you, ya know...do with it?
I've become increasingly certain of late that Ant is wanting to establish a relationship as a spirit guide for me. I'm all for that but...how? What kind of relationship does one want with one's animal guide, and how does one establish it? And what happens after that?
Or is that something I need to be asking Ant myself?

Animal guides are there to help and guide us. We learn alot just from our guide itself. The characteristics of a Bear, Bea, Ant, Snake. We learn from the characteristics of the guides themselves as to how we will be guided by them. Some will stay with you some will pop in from now and then guiding us and leave.
How to communicate with your guide?
Many people experience occasions where they will "see" (or feel or hear) the totem. The totem will often come to speak with you and teach you lessons about how to utilize your energies, interact with others, manifest your goals and desires and much else.
Honoring Your Totem
Surround yourself with pictures, statues and other representations of your totem.
Read books and study the life and habits of your totem.
Watch nature specials about your totem.
Read books regarding the lessons which your totem teaches.
Spend time in meditiation with your totem animal.

I have three animal guides, Rabbit, Fox, then Stag/Deer. Rabbit being the one I usually am attuned with. I have used animal medicines through retrieval journies and I have came back with Crow, Cougar and many others. The book called "Animal Magick" by Conway has been a great help to me in my animal medicine works.
Rabbits are really good at shapeshifting and shapeshifting meditations are great!

I'm a bear. Always have been, always will be. That its associated wiht Bridgit is even better since she's my patron(back when there were bears in the UK, they were the original winter waker uppers in early spring) That's because bears aren't true hibernators, and come out on the first warm days to scrounge for winter killed deer.. so seeing a bear on Imbolc.. up from the belly of the earth meant 'spring is soon comming'
in native american tradition, the bear is the grandfather of humans and taught people how to find food and medicines in the forest. As a herbalist, that appeals to me as well.
Bears are exceedingly protective and good mothers, that also fits me in my current place in life.

That's funny cause I actually kinda grew quite a distast for squirrels this summer...lol mostly I just think they are annoying, but cute if quiet and still.
I actually spent my summer in Grand Teton National Park surrounded by animals, it was quite exhilirating. I loved it. I got to know so many of them...feel there spirits and be part of their community. It was awesome.
I got to live side by side bears, elk, coyote, squirrels, badger, pine martin, marmot, snake, trout, bison, mule deer, white tail deer, pronghorn, moose, bat, mouse, bald eagle, hawk, falcon, gray jay, swallow, and other birds. Not to mention countless other smaller animals.
The bears were everywhere, but I saw one only once. It's kinda funny how they have such a strong presence but are kind of elusive. I'm sure they saw me lots of times...lol. With all the bears around though I never did a sense of my bear spirit guide. I just realized this. I wonder if she went away.
I think the two animals I really connected to up there were the gray jay. The bird fascinates me. After the 1st time I saw it at the north end of the park, he followed me down to the south end and I was seeing him everyday. He seemed to always be over my shoulder.
The other one was the pronghorn. This was the animal I was most excited to see. I was getting quite sad cause I had been in the park for 4mos without seeing any. The last two weeks though I got to see many of them. I was quite happy.

I have a birth totem(animal guide) that is the strongest plus a few other less dominant.
1. Buffalo
2. Dragonfly
3. Golden eagle
4. Crow
5. Snake
Each one has a different purpose and signals specifics in my life. The Buffalo is my dominant one tho.

Basically, if you're drawn to any animals more than any other (say for example, you seem to like fish more than any other animal), that could be your animal guide.
Or try do some kind of meditation or trance work.
Hope this helps.

I've had this thing with squirrels for the past few years; squirrel pulling on my pants leg, one walking around me instead of running away, another sunbathing and not really caring that I was walking up. Even if the squirrel is not my guide I think there's a message that I'm supposed to get.
A friend of mine has butterflies and sometimes they come visit me as if I'm supposed to pass a message for them.

Mine are crow, kestrel and magpie. Michael's are snowy-owl (the harfang of my screen-name :)), seagull and magpie - as we are soul-mates, we share the magpie guide. She's a little minx sometimes but she gives us much more of an incisive outlook on life than the rest of our guides.
I would add to your list that crow governs a sense of humour (my ex-boyfriend and I share our Charlie and he has needed a sense of humour in his work dealing with the disadvantaged as a social services clerk), seagull gives M shrillness and the ability to make a loud noise; kestrel eye for detail; magpie the ability to flutter from point to point and keep people following you; and snowy-owls are tough and hardy birds able to survive in hostile climates.

My spirit guide is a Merlin Hawk. He and I have been closely bonded for years, and I have an image of one tattooed on my shoulder. Since they aren't as popular or well known as redtails or falcons, I'm posting a pic as well. They are small agressive hawks, and native to North America.
Working with animal spirits is one of my areas of magic and I have aided many people (through guided meditation) to find their animal protectors. I would be happy to talk with anyone who has questions about how to do so.

Do you know whether you have ever been a merlin hawk, either in this life or a previous one?
It was common in pre-Christian times and - apparently - for those who still believe in the "old religion" - I mean, not Gardnerian Wicca, the really old stuff - for people to be able to become animals. There are a lot of instances in mediaeval and early modern literature where wise women have been able to "become" animals - I mean quite literally, as in the Lay of Bisclavret by Marie de France - and it is interesting to talk to M about the times when he has dreamt of being a seagull or owl.
M tells me that were-creatures do exist, and that "hybrid" forms are common "costumes" among people who still follow the old religious ideas; those who know the secrets are often able to "put on" a pair of fox ears or a magpie's tail in private. It is fairly powerful magick, but it is common apparently among people who are only a few lives into their human development and who recently "came" as humans after having been foxes or magpies or owls or bats in a former life. M and I are both very old spirits (it is 8,000 years since we were flapping around a Siberian forest as an owl and a crow) but we know a number of people who know they are fairly recently incarnated as human beings and they still have conscious memory of animal life; it is also they who are opening up psychic and telepathic understanding to us older spirits because they understand the need for it more than we do, so it stands to reason that they should also be more magickal in spirit than we are.
It is more common I think in the UK than the US which is I think why it isn't so well documented in spiritual literature (though of late it has been getting blander and blander and I suspect for political reasons there are a lot of things that it is not possible to publish), but animal spirits are coming in in great numbers as the human population expands to replace human spirits that are sitting this era out, so therefore the spiritual consciousness of the world is increased in general in preparation for a seismic change in the way we view psychic and spiritual "powers".
I think I have been a crow once - I had a very strange dream of flapping about helplessly under the bedclothes. It happened a while ago when I was temporarily unable to take medication for depression and I think was exacerbated by seeing M in spirit in my room (we were not together then, in fact I only knew him as a public figure and I was at his political conference while he was leader of the UK Tories), but I "dreamt" I was a bird struggling to breathe underneath the blankets. M explained this to me later - I woke up a while later as a human being, but I was actually conscious of some sort of altered state of being during the night - that he had shocked me by projecting himself into the room and that I had changed suddenly into a bird because of the shock to my human system.
I'm not just guessing here, I'm going by what M tells me is routine in the upper levels of government, but it seems fairly commonplace over here at least among those in the know of this sort of stuff to be aware of an ability to shape-change only previously thought to be fiction.

Hmmm...
Do you know whether you have ever been a merlin hawk, either in this life or a previous one?
I'm not really sure to be honest. Whenever I do a vison quest, my hawk is there, and he and I can merge in that state. But as for literally, I don't know. I don't think in this one anyway. Or in any recent lifetimes.
It was common in pre-Christian times and - apparently - for those who still believe in the "old religion" - I mean, not Gardnerian Wicca, the really old stuff - for people to be able to become animals.
That's me, into the really old stuff.

I am an old soul. That is why I do not think it may have been anytime recent. I have a strong, and many say uncanny connection to animals. All kinds of animals. I have always felt more connected to them than to people.

My animal guide came to me in a dream. I was walking along a path in the woods...a small baby moose walked up to me (small enough for me to pick up). I picked the baby up and held it feeling its breath on my face. I looked down the path and the mother moose was looking at me. I put the baby down and the mother moose nodded her head and beckoned me to follow as the baby ran down the path after the mother. I followed the moose and then my alarm clock went off.
A few days later while driving down a back road a cow moose was stand in a swamp off the side of the road. I stopped my car and got out. She stood still and just stared at me for about 2 minutes. Then a truck drove by and she ran off. :sniffsnif

I never felt the need to go activly looking for my spirit/animal guide until lately, when I was contacted unmistakebly by Magpie. I actually journeyed with a Native American Shamanic Practitioner for this purpose, and was not expecting much at the time. When Magpie did contact me, we flew together, and I could see the tops of the trees, glistening rivers and streams, and cliffs as if this was the most natural thing in the world. I think I posted here somewhere abut the journey in it's entirety. Anyway, Magpie has become a very visual guide for me as of late. Also, Raven has been making herself known in many ways this fall season. I have posted about that here, also. My heart is gladdened by the appearance of these guides, as I do believe that I relate to and am helped by their guidance and strengths at this time of my life....
My sons is Crow, and he knows and embraces this (well, as much as he can be aware of this fact, as he is only six. But I do believe that kids this age are very open and intuitive, and maybe he knows more that I have given him credit for. ;) ) I do believe Crow will always stick with him.
Hummingbird came to me this summer, too.
I have a feeling Magpie will always be with me, to guide and generally be my friend. The other guides may just be temporary, needed for now, I don't really know. I am very glad that they have made themselves known, though, and I have made a geat effort to leave some seeds/nuts out for them this year as a token of thanks. I left these food things in random areas of the forest, so they don't get used to the goodies and start depending on them. :)
*Nods to Hedwig Harfang. Looks like we have something in common, maybe. :) *

Wolf is my primary totem (no surprise there). However, I have worked with numerous totems over the years in varying capacities. Some, such as Horse and Fox, are more common. However, I also deliberately work with "food totems", the totems of animals commonly valued only as comestibles, especially Chicken, Crab and Pig.
And I've worked with the totems of extinct animals, as well as helping the totems of endangered species to give their physical "children" a boost.

I believe I have already posted in this thread some time ago, but I'll go ahead and re-post. My guide has always been the wolf as well.

Bear.... it means a lot more than 'strong' bears are connected with strong maternal instincts, and traditional healers...as well as protectors of the forest....
they are also pragmatic....no nonsense.... tough survivors.... not slick and sexy... and built for endurance
look at my picture.. I even look like one.

I know I have a connection with the wombat. I'm sure no one saw that coming from my username. :D But I feel a close kinship to them and feel I have a lot to learn from them, even though I share so many common traits with them.
I can't really find any information regarding having a wombat as a totem or a spirit guide, though. :(

The first animal that always comes to mind here is cat, as you can also see in my signature and in my avatar. Cat has been with me for as long as I can remember, even though I also distinctly recall being contacted by birds of prey when I was younger, and I feel slightly cattish from time to time.
Other animals I have a strong bond with are fox, wolf, giraffe and lynx. I also have some animals which specifically pop up whenever I have to pay attention to something... butterfly marks big changes and a move forward, while magpie symbolises a job well done...
All in all, I'm pretty animal-oriented. I love working with them and they're just so awesome to observe. I can sit in the zoo for ages (mainly near the wolves and lynxes) and just watch them and communicate with their energy in some way.

Frog/Toad: Frogs and toads symbolize feminine energy, fecundity, water, new life, new beginnings, the mystery of creation, cleansing, refreshing, purifying, refilling, clearing negativity, replenishment, positive energy, transformation, beginning a new cycle, long life, good luck, changing luck, starting new projects and prosperity. They are a Goddess symbol and are connected to the moon. They are connected to Heket, Isis, Hathor, Ch'ing-Wa Sheng, Aphrodite, Sabazius and Ahriman
I didn't exactly "get one", they just keep coming into my life, sort of following me about, wherever I live or go.

There isn't an "I don't know, don't really care" option, but that's how I feel.
I've always liked snakes and feel some sort of connection there, but eh.

Can you belong to a egyptian pantheon and still have animal guides?
In short, unless your particular religion restricts you from animal observances, then yes you can still have animal guides as far as I know. World-wide many different traditions have viewed animals (or certain animals) as sources of knowledge and/or power. Egyptians viewed the (please corect me if I'm wrong) cat, croc, and snake as spiritual creatures.
But I have been having odd dreams about bears! I dont get it, I dont even like bears. .
I'm of the strong opinion that you in fact have a deep-rooted belief in animal guidance (even if it be sub-conscious). Even if you don't like an animal doesn't devalidate it's strength as a guide in your life because more oft than not they're letting you know that there's some part of yourself that you've either laid to atrophy or didn't know you posessed.
It could also mean that the bears attributes are neccessary for your immediate or future survival. It's mostly the stuff we don't like that teaches us the most in the end.

Now, as to try and rectify my off topic.
Tigrrrr has always been one of the most powerful influences in my life. (he manifest usually in meditation or as a power I've seldom dreamt him, though I can definitely feel his energy at times)
A good second is the blue-jay and blue-bird. Both have a tendancy to manifest in dreams and in real life. When I was in California the Blue bird would drop down a few feet in front of me and kind of guide me in a certain direction... wasn't scared of me in the least I could see that by the mannerisms and the way the eyes were set.
I've had fairly recent encounters with the crow too.
Onto mystical/metaphysical creatures...
I've a dragon gaurdian that shows every once in a blue moon, though, I will admit not that much recently.
Also, there's one I guess I'd term wild-cat, or king of the wild-cats (still slightly confused on this one). He used to have a bad habit of running up my bed grazing my back and then nuzzling my neck in the wee hours (which never helped me out when I had work the next day, but still, a friend/guide can do as they please for the most part I suppose)....
