View Full Version : Never let your mother trim your hair

I asked my mother to trim my hair, and now I have no hair. It It was supposed to be shoulder length, and somehow I got a bowl cut that was no longer than my ear lobes. I was forced to cut a lot more off to prevent looking like a little Dutch boy with breasts. It's shaped now, and looks ok, but I've had long hair for the past 21 years.
Needless to say, this is the last time I hand my mother a pair of sissors. :p and say, "Could you trim my hair?"

Oh noooooooooooooooooooo :( you poor thing!!!
I had that happen last fall...not by my mother, thank Gaea, but it was traumatic all the same! I went to the hairdressers and asked her to take no more than a couple of inches off, just to get rid of the dead ends and clean it up a little....she took SEVEN inches off!!! I was so mortified when I got home..my hubby loved it immediately (even though he loves my long hair), but I just started bawling on his shoulder and couldn't stop for 20 minutes or for long enough to tell him what happened!
I feel for you sweetie!

You poor thing! My mom did the same to me years ago.
I am not holding a grudge, but I have never forgotten.
but..........
I am always especially careful when I trim my daughters bangs.
Hang in there though, it grows back pretty fast. You may even decide that you like it better shorter. Anything is possible.
It is just such a s"shock" to the system to see it for the first few days.
Blessings to you. I hope you feel better about it soon.

I learned a long time ago not to let mine come near my hair. Grandmothers can be worse mine tried to perm my hair and burned quite a bit of it there was a lot of stubble amid the remainder. When I was young I had hair to my waist at 7 my mother decided she wasn't washing my hair anymore. She used to wash it by having me bend over in the tub and put my head under the facet so I never saw what she had used. I was told that if I wanted to keep it I had one chance to wash it myself and it had to be squeeky clean. I used a whole bottle of conditioner trying to get it clean. Then she page boy chopped it. I cried for a long time and had to be escorted to my classes because I wanted to wear a paper bag over my head and my parents knew even at 7 I would have cut school rather than be seen like that. Her other famous trick place a comb at the part pull down as fast as you can the knots come ripping out very quickly you are done. Of course the child (me ) was crying but that was trivial the job was done. Ok just a wee bit of bitterness there. I now have a hang up about anyone even a hair dresser near my hair especially with a comb. My husband knows it's a mark of trust that if I am having trouble with my hair I let him brush it and my daughter after years of Mommy doesn't like anyone to play with her hair still tries. Then she gets that wounded animal look when I am crying because she is hurting me. Such is life.:D At least she will never know how it feels to have a knot riped out.

Tigerwallah, I know how you feel. The last haircut I got from my mom was when I was 7. I promised myself that she will never cut my hair again! I'm still very fussy about my hairdressers. I have long hair now but that's because I haven't found another hairdresser I can trust. I prefer short hair. It's now almost to my waist.

Aw! That sucks, Tigerwallah. ::hug:: I'm sure it looks great though. :)
Eesh, you brought back very painful memories of when I was five and had my hair cut from waist-length to above shoulders--and before I looked in the mirror, I decided to "experiment" with the scissors when my mother wasn't looking and ended up having to lop off a few MORE inches just to keep even. :p

At this point, the biggest problem I'm having is that my neck and ears are cold in the air conditioning. I was NEVER cold before. It's a weird feeling. Anyway, thanks for your funny stories and support. I :heartthro you guys!!!

Well, look at it this way, the Moon is waning, and depending upon when your hair was actually cut, it will grow faster. :D Promise! If I need to trim my hair, I trim it during the New Moon/growing moon (because that makes it grow, grow grow!), but if I want it to grow gradually, I cut it during the Full Moon/dying moon. Makes sense, and it works. :D

ouch... i don't let my mother touch my hair, that last time she did I got that same kind of hair cut and then it took forever to grow out. though, she does trim my bangs a little when she gets tired of them being in my face. ugh, nothing i can do about that, she corners me. my hair still isn't as long as it was when she cut it that one time... oh well, it will get there.

Very sad stories, bad hair experiences can have a long-lasting effect on us!
Reminded me of when i took my son for his first haircut when he was about 3 - it was shoulder length at the time.
He sat in the chair, the hairdresser came up to him with the scissors - and he screamed and screamed and screamed, wouldn't stop, turned absolutely hysterical, they'd never seen anything like it before.
He's now 20 and has hair down to his waist!

I have two boys with short hair that want it buzzed and one my 4 year old with long blond hair between his shoulder blades. Everytime my family sees him they start eyeing the scizzors! I have forbidden it but I have to make sure they are never alone with him they will cut it anyway they have that gleem in their eyes.....

hehe me too, I remember many years of botched uneven bangs. Maybe it's part of the reason why these days I still can't be too concerned with my hair - it always grows back doesn't it :)

Ack, another couple reasons never to let my mom touch my hair...I'll do it myself rather than have it all cut off. I've waited a long time to get it past my waist. ^_^

I used to have hair to my waist and bum for most of my childhood years. Now it doesn't get longer then my shoulders, I just don't have the time to care for it otherwise :)

I never told you guys about the time my mom gave my sister & I matching perms. 8O 8O 8O 8O I can laugh now but not when I was eight! That was the very last time I had a haircut until I was 15. I went to a hairdresser. :D
