just wondering...why is it there? mine is in my bedroom. i like it there because it makes me bedroom feel more...sacred i guess. also because my parents wouldn't let me put it anywhere else although I do have a portable table and if I ever do a ritual where i really need to move around a lot i will set up a portable alter in our game room.
Where is yours?

In my room on a night stand. Had to take it down though cause I have company staying in my room for the next week and 1/2 but it will be right back up after they leave :)

There are easy ways to make altars without them looking like one.

Ours is in the living room, on the north wall. We have sort of made the entire living room part of the altar.
On the west wall we have images of sea shells and starfish. On the east wall we have some tarot card images and a peacock feather. Gareth also has his model of the Starship Voyager over there... so that's sort of "air-ish". On the south wall we have our family pictures and flanking them we have some hanging candles. The north wall has a large picture of the night goddess above the altar shelf.

Mine is in my closet with a ton of junk on top of it (from an unfinished renovating job) :(
When I go to do rituals, I take it out of my closet & push it to the middle of my floor. :)

I maintain two; one along the northeast wall of my living
room (which makes it the first thing you see when you come
in the front door), and another within a waterfall hallow
in the forest behind my house. The first is my working alter,
used for daily devotion, simple spellwork, etc. The second
is more of a sanctuary, used only for sabbats and high ritual,
the location chosen for it's direct physical correspondence
to my tradition's concept of the cosm (situated so that facing
north has you looking at a large stone mound, east- a spring-fed waterfall
(we associate east with water), south- a large oak which is
crowned by the sun at noon, and west- a open vista to the
sky (we associate west with air). I consider this alter-place
a holy sanctuary, and never approach it for mundane reasons.

My alter is in my room, next to the large window, but during my rituals I move it to the center of my room. Sometimes I take it outside, but since i have 3 unruly dogs, lots and lots of rain and nosey neighbors, I generally keep it in my room.

My altar is on a set of drawers, and it stays there, as my room is small, though in the future if I do rituals I might move it onto my bed.

My altar is in my bedroom in one corner that only i really go in.It is on top of a set of drawers that are only mine, dedicated to my path, full of my supplies candles, incense and the like, and lots of my books.

My altar is a small, round wooden table I found at Big Lots for about just $8.00! A bargain huh:) Anyway it's in my bedroom in front of a black bookcase I use to also store my witchcraft books, and a few other doo dads I have that I use for magical purposes. :floating:

Mine is in a small room that's off my bedroom, facing North. It's called the Meditation Room and I keep all my supplies, books, herbs, etc. in the room.

Mine is a drawer from my dresser, I keep all my supplies in it, and when I'm doing ritual, I take it out and put it upside down in the middle of my bedroom floor like a table. I wish I had a permanent one though.

Oh, I like your idea Little Rhiannon. I might have saved that little piddly eight bucks if I'd used my little brain to do that. And keeping your ritual things in the drawer when not in use is again a great idea. It's like the drawer/altar charges the ritual items and they in turn charge your altar. I like it! :floating:

How does one make an altar not LOOK like an altar?

In a few different boxes. I've moved around 5 times in the last year. I'm *going* to be putting it in a NE corner of my bedroom. I have a gorgous tapestry to hang on the wall,,, it's huge... and i'm going to be hunting for a new actual table, just as soon as I'm not the only one working!!!! lol

Mine is in our sunroom, on a special little table, sort of like a small coffee table covered in tooled leather with flowers on it.
I also have a less formal altar in my library on top of my favorite antique bookcase. I don't use this one for rituals, but I have some special things there which I consider gifts- some sharks' teeth fossils I found, shells, driftwood, and a candle lantern a friend made for me with a cool sun design. Sometimes I like to light the lantern when I meditate, and the bookcase holds all of my special books and references.

Mine is in the Northeast corner of my room. It's difficult doing rituals, but I manage. I can't keep any burnt candles out though, I've had bad experience with fire, and my parents flip out every time they see a candle in my room. It's funny, really.

thanks everyone, this is really interesting.
i forgot to add that mine is on a bookcase where I keep all my "witchy" things and is face North - although not for any special reason, that's where the bookcase is. I have window on the north and east wall of the corner and my shrine is on the east side so I have a little sacred corner where I like to do my thing and my dog likes to sleep.

Antonius, I would just say, in answer to your question, to just have an altar that doubles for some other piece of furniture in you home/room etc., Or atleast have an extra place to store your ritual items in, away from prying eyes {and hands}. It'll save you money too.

My yule altar is on top of the piano in the living room. It's full of candles, reindeer, suns, moons, stars, elves, angels, red berries and tree branches.
It's sssoooooo pretty, wish my digital cam wasn't broken.
We moved over Thanksgiving and I have yet to find the spot for my permanent altar, but I'm working on a big circle outside in the woods, next to my pond. It's quite perfect.

I *want* to set up a permanent alter in my room, but it's so small! I've seen closets bigger than my room, literally. I think I found a place though :floating: against the far wall is my bed, but there is a little space on either side of it, so I might put a little table at the foot of my bed and make it -alterfied-

Cresentarm, my parents root and rummage through EVERYTHING in my room. The premise is checking for drugs but they know I find drugs repulsive and utterly pointless. Im amazed they havent discovered the box where I keep all my altar stuff, or maybe they have, they just didnt bother looking under the layer of books thats covering it :hehehehe:

Oh, Antonius honey, You are in a pickle. I'm just sitting here thinking, trying to figure out what you can do. As for those ritual items, either the parents don't understand what their for, or maybe you've subconsciously put a protection bubble around them. Another idea is one of those bedtrays, you know with the short legs that sometimes fold up ,and they're usually made of wood so you've got a natural material too. As for the cost, I see them at Big Lots all the time, usually on sale for no more than maybe $12.00 or less. Or even a grass mat. You're in California so you know about the .99 cents stores. I see those mats in there all the time. Then, when you want to practice your craft, you could just lay the mat on the floor and go for it. When you're done, you can fold it up or even hang it on the wall. No one will have any idea what you're using it for. :shhhh:

Lava rock, feather, seashell and quartz on a shelf or something. That works :)
