View Full Version : Question: Balancing elemental energy

I've been reading a bit about elemental correspondences. One source I found talks about having an "excess" of elemental energy causing problems. (And I suppose, conversely, one could also have too little of an element present, as well.) For instance, too much of the element air causes one to be spacey and "out to lunch;" too much water makes one over-emotional and touchy, etc.

My question is, what does a person do about excess elemental energies, or a lack of a certain element? What techniques are used to keep them in balance? Can anyone recommned a good book or article on the subject? My searches of MW and the Web haven't turned up much specific information.

Thanks in advance for any info. :)

There is a book called "Elemental Magick", I think. Also, you can spend time growing close to each of the elements in turn. Do meditations and observe them in their natural habitat. Ummmm...I'm sorry babe, but I'm REALLY super tired and I need to sleep. I'll get back with ya tomorrow. Someone will probably have helped you by then though. Brightest Blessings. Good night.

Check out: The Craft by Dorothy Morrison...
There's a great elemental balancing exercise in there. And I'm sure she'd welcome questions about it in her forum, too!

the Sacred Circle tarot book has an excercize in it for balancing elemental energy in oneself by working with the court cards from each of the four suits,..and I'm glad you brought this subject up..I know I definitely need elemental balancing myself
Am looking forward to reading the other posts in this thread..

Is there a web site you can go to so you can see if you are balanced or not? I have no idea if I am in sync! I could be all out of whack for all I know...... :)

Actually a pretty easy solution is to spend more time around a certain element. If you have too much air or too little earth (which are the big ones for me) go outside, sit under a tree, do more grounding exercises, cook. Pretty much you can balance it out by spending more time in the opposite element and doing things associated with that element or spending tme in that element.

Recommendation for reading: "Wisdom of the Elements" by Margie MacArthur - it's got some exercises and meditations.

As far as balancing, it's much easier to add to a lack of connection to the elements you're weaker in, than it is to deal with the excess. But here's a few examples.

I tend to be pretty Air heavy (my work and a lot of my interests focus heavily on knowledge, intellect, information, and communication). Sometimes this is very useful, but it's not very balanced. I have the most trouble with Fire.

So, I go about dealing with this in two ways: for group ritual, I've been calling South very regularly for the last 6 months, to help me get a better feel for it (which has been working quite well, actually), along with my spending some more time with related things (looking at/using candles more often, paying attention to the sun, spending time outside in the sun or other fire-related things like that.)

But I also, to make sure I counterbalance some of the Air stuff, make a point of doing things that connect me to other elements. Part of this is being *very* glad I married someone who reminds me that there's more to life than the Air stuff. (very handy, that), but part of it is just doing things like going swimming or spending time near rivers or lakes (Water), being outside/in conservatory greenhouses/with animals (Earth).

But I can also do some other things, without moving myself around - I might spend a day much more conciously being aware of what my intuition is telling me (water), working with herbs or stones or cooking seasonal food (earth), or being passionate about something (fire).

You might find spending a specific amount of time focusing on each element in turn (a week or a month, depending how you want to do it) might also help you sort some things out in your own head, and figure out where you want to spend more time or balance.)

Jenett, I have a really cool chant for when you are working with Fire. It's one of my favorites.

We are one
With the infinite Sun
forever, forever, forever.

It's short and simple, but I really like the rhythym. Actually I really can't explain why I am so drawn to it, I just am! :)

I am going to go check that book out...
Thanks for the info..... :colorful:

Now this is a thread I can use! LMAO I am grossly bogged down with excess of Water and air...fire and earth are like no where to be found. Maybe I should go sit outside with my hands in the dirt surrounded by a circle of fire :D

It really is just about getting in touch with those elements.
