Ginkgo biloba is one that I'd try. It has become a fairly common remedy for memory especially. It works by increasing blood flow to the brain, and is one herb that has been studied "scientifically" and "proven" effective. Most pharmacies and health food stores carry it in capsule form. They also have herbal mixtures in capsule form for memory and mental clarity in which ginkgo is one of the ingredients. Sometimes they combine it with ginseng. I just planted a ginkgo tree last year. They are amazing trees, they are the last of a prehistoric type. Their leaves have an interesting shape and thick, leathery type of texture. I'm hoping it will be of a good harvestable size by the time senility sets in!:D

Don't you have to have two trees to bare the nuts? I don't know....

Yes, you do need two trees for ginkgo nuts, actually a male and female. My neighbour has a ginkgo too and he is ever-looking for a female! They only sell male clones, supposedly the nuts on the female trees give off a very unpleasant odour. My neighbour thinks this bunk, that it is just the industry trying to monopolize- he may be correct. I mean, I have a lot of walnut trees, and yes, there is an odour when they all fall and they start to rot, but I don't think it all unpleasant- and hey- it's nature right? The squirrels and chipmunks clean them up quickly enough anyway. I've read that you can also collect the leaves as they yellow and fall, dry and use as tea. It was this method that I'm hoping will work for me.:)

:bad: Gingko nuts tastes as bad as they smell! As a child, my mom used to make a soup with gingko nuts! *shudder!*

Also, other herbs such as rosemary, sage & thyme will help as well.

Claritin is supposed to be one of the non-sedating formulas. You might want to look at other causes as well.

There are natural alternatives for your hayfever. Things like berries which contains flavonoids that inhibits the release of histamines. Rose hips are high in flavonoids & vit C, which is another natural antihistimine. Chamomile, gingko, sage, eyebright, licorice, goldenrod, plantain, nettle, wild indigo, elderflower...just to name some. As to the proportions, that's hard to say. I find that what works for one, doesn't work for others.

LOL:D
Is there any way that you would describe the particular smell/taste of ginkgo nuts? Is it just a personal distaste, or is it something that only certain people can handle? Like mincemeat? ICK! Should I tell my neighbour to give up the search? He's really serious about this!
Mullein helps hayfever too, a tea made with the leaves. Take before bed only, it induces sleep and generous doses can be mildly narcotic. You can see this as either a positive or a negative side effect...;)
