fellow afiliates of celtic art and archeological findings... should i bid for this... thingy on e-bay? it's a piece of bronze, obviously a broken off piece of some ornamental.. uh... bronze thing. it doesn't say anything about it, other than:
you are bidding for a small bronze plaque (length ca. 2.5 cm) with a little dancing man image on it. original. private auction. have fun bidding.

edited to add: it started at 1 euro, now it's up to 15. :hairraise

It's not my taste.... And without being proven authentic, I would worry that someone has a mold out there... But that's just me. :) Def. neat if it is real, though!

yeah, that's what i'm thinking... is it worth paying that much for something i don't know is authentic...

Depends, I guess. :) If the price is low enough, and it is a cast from an older piece, then it would be a cool reference point if you could find out what. If it is authentic, then yay, go you! Otherwise, my personal online buying habits would lead me to not get it...

I personally don't think it looks authentic, but I am very skeptical. Do they ahve any official documents with it?

it reminds me of touristy amish things they sell in pennsylvania. it's cute, but i wouldn't spend an arm and a leg on it.

banondraig, or anyone else who speaks a bit of german... click the link, and then go to "andere artikel des verkäufers"... it'll take you to all his other stuff. he's got loads of this sort of thing, tho very few celtic artifacts. where do you think all this comes from, and why hasn't he/she got any info on it?

I'm with Banondraig on this....
looks "Dutch" to me. I recently gave my neighbor (who decorates in Dutch primative antiques) two cookie blocks. They are carved pieces of wood where short bread would be baked into something with a pattern once flipped over..(think jello mold)
Anyway...while this isn't the exact same picture..it tis similar.

If there was just more to it....the whole tea kettle, piece of strapping metal, heck - even a boot scrapper....
we could tell much more.

But I think if it speaks to YOU and you like it...you should go for it. Sometimes we find out later on exactly what something is and why it resonates with us.

Just set a reasonable limit in your noggin for what you can afford to spend and bid to that point. Good policy anyway.

Good luck

well, i'm not going for it. but i found something a whole lot cooler, and with a bit more info, too:

edited to add: here's the info on it:
unrestored sickle, fragments of a horseshoe, pieces of a horsebit and one dagger (handle missing). these were found in the vicinity of a celtic fort.

Sorry I didn't see this sooner, mothwench!

I think you made the right choice on the first auction, and agree with Sabrina that it looks more like a springerle (cookie) mold - although I've never seen one in bronze before (but ebay descriptions are notorious for bad information, so it may not be bronze at all).

Now, in the second auction, those items at least look more authentic.

i've always wanted a sickle. :D
the auctions going for five more days, so far noone's bid for it, and it's still at one euro. :2G:
i'll let you know what happens. :)

i'll second that! highly cool! also, my parents are on e-bay all the time & what a lot of people will do is wait till the very last moment and then bid. there's some way for you to put in a bid now so that they will re-bid for you in a specified increment up to a price you enter, at least on the american version. i don't know if e-bay is different in germany, although i don't know of any reason it would be apart from the language. :)

Mothy,
I like the 2nd auction better also! Unfortunately, I can't read German, so can't explore this too much further.....
One thing to do is to check the seller's rating, and see what other people who have bought from them have to say.
that's what I do and I am a pretty frequent e-bay shopper. I have only had about 2 unpleasant buying experiences trying it this way..... :)
