Hello All,

After reading the post "Oh canada" started by Cappy I was curious as to how many people were from Canada, but in partiular what part of the country they are from. I know there are loads from BC and lots from Ontario, but lets see what we come up with! :)

Cappy

I voted Quebec because I live in Quebec (Gatineau right across the river from Ottawa) but I spend most of my time(for work ect...) in Ottawa On, that's where I usually am during my time on MW--> Ottawa!

Hehe, I live in a province of Canada not mentioned in the aforementioned poll...Florida...You know the place where you all flock to during spring? (j/k) Hehe, I'm just obnoxious at times, sorry.

They are called provinces, right? Y'know, because...

Muireannach
January 5th, 2004, 03:48 PM
Yes they are called Provinces, not states, and we have postal codes, not zip codes, and parliment, not congress lol  does that cover it? lol

Heh, yeah thanks...I'm actually quite interested in visiting your icy wasteland, I love the cold, and I hear it's quite nice up there. I've "been" once but that was a Niagra Falls crossing and lasted a whole 2 hours, not enough time to enjoy the marvelous splendors of the Great Glacier that is Canada....

Hehe, btw, please don't take offense to my Canada references...It's all in good fun...

It's only icey in the winter. We aren't a glacier ;) Actually up until last night it was still rainy rather then icey. There's a bit of snow on the ground here in southwestern Ontario today though.

It's funny cause it's true!

The 11th Province people! Or is it a Territory? My dad used to live in Florida and he said that every two cars had a Canadian licence!

-35 C here at the moment, so it's icy as can be, but a lot of people don't realise we can get hot summers as well, but since we cover so much land I can't speak for all of Canada, since some areas are more humid, and others with a completely different landscape and placement etc. That being said I am tempted to ehad to Florida now!!!! lol

North Coastal BC.....:T Only 6 hours away from..*gasp* Alaska!

-15 or something last time I checked - but with a -32 windchill. :shaker: I'm not going outside today!

I thought I might be all by my lonesome here in Redneck Alberta, but I saw someone else from here today!

It's warmed up to -20 today :yayhawaii after being about -30 yesterday...sigh. Although, living in Calgary, there's always hope of a Chinook. Bring that on!

But I was born in British Columbia and lived for a brief period of time in Ontario. :floating:

When I was 19 I lived in Thunder Bay for almost 4 months... Unfortunately all winter months so I didn't get to enjoy it as much as I would have liked! But I have family in around there. :) I have been lucky to have seen our country from coast to coast. I would like to make it up into the Territories though and also take a tour through the Maritimes! My sister's husband just got a job in PEI so there's more incentive to go :D Something about BC though, especially Northern BC that just gets into your blood and soul. Someday (probably when I'm 60 :P ) I'll be able to afford to go "home" :hearteyes

I'm another Albertan, although I'm not a redneck! (*cough*Rockprincess :hehehehe: )

It is rather cold here right now, but after the heat wave this summer, I have one thing to say to those (not on MW, but the general public) who bitched and complained about it being too hot and conveniently forgot about :

I TOLD YOU SO!!! :uhhuhuh: Yup, that was me, saying "At least it's not minus thirty!" and being rebuffed with a chorus of "But...it's so HOT!" Silly people.

Personally, I don't mind the cold so much. :damncold: Really, I don't.

The university here is really nice, the city is atleast getting enw stores and developments so it is on the up and up, I currently attend the college here and it is ncie as well, we're also cheaper than the big-city unis and colleges.

Wow, there's almost enough Calgarians here for us to form a posse! Wooh! Canada!
I'm from Ontario, Burlington to be exact. Born and raised, loud and proud!
Lol, we call it Ontari-ario too, heh. Or "Old Ontar-I-oh-I-Oh" from the black fly song, lol.
Im definately a hard core Eh-er. I find that the farther you get from ontario, though, the more people say 'eh. I love 'eh... people make fun of it, but its something that we can identify eachother by. If I'm in the states, I hear people say "nice weather, huh?" and I know they're American, but I'll hear someone say "nice weather, eh?" I know my people are around, lol.
I've never heard anyone say aboot... lol.. I think American's just hear aboot becuase they say abaot, and drag out their a sounds. I also hear a lot of americans saying words like roof, as ruf, lol. Meh, there are different accents all over the states just like there are different accents all over Canada. It's cool.
Actually, its cold... really cold. Its weird though.. we had highs of 30-40 C (86-104) in August and September, and +20 C(68 F) in october, and up until late november, and now we're having lows of -35 C (-31 F). I hate lake effect wind, lol!

I'm actually originally from Alberta though (Edmonton), and I must admit, I do NOT miss the winters. I think the coldest it's been here so far this year is -8 or -9 (and that was at night). We've had snow the past week too! But it's all melting now.

Edited to say:
I also think I say "eh" quite a bit. As a question "you know what I'm talking about, eh?" and as a statement "eh, that's awesome". When I moved to BC I noticed people out here said it a lot less. It must just vary by region.

Incidentally, i'm looking to move to Canada sometime in the future. I was thinking about Maine, but ever since this whole war fiasco blazed up, i figure i'd rather go live in a country that doesn't get involved like Australia or Canada. What i've seen and heard of Canada so far seems like a great place full of chilled people. Hopefully i'll plan a little trip out there this year to get a lay of the land and get my bearings.
Does anyone recommend where i should make time to see?

Depends on what kind of weather you like, land forms, etc. (If you're used to praries, mountains, neat colours in the fall, etc)

Though... I suggest BC. :rotfl: Because you got kick a$$ skiing!

Muireannach

Raydreamer...

If you like a good mix of fun, big city, and nature I would recommend going to Vancouver, great shops, restaurants, and fabulous parks and beaches then take a trip over to the island :) Northern BC is great if you like rugged wildnerness aswell.

If you like more of a "wild west" tourism approach I would go around Alberta and Sask. lots of neat scenery there, I did a horseback ride there and was wonderful.

If you want to learn about Canadian history go to Ontario/Quebec, some of the oldest parts of Canada, you can see the parliment buildings and also see all the cool things in Quebec City like the old part of it, very beautiful.

If you like the sea and beautiful ocean scenery and unique people go to the maritimes, some parts of it are like little Ireland!

That is my generalized suggestion list!

Morrighana

On the about/aboot thing... it's actually not a myth, like some people think. It's a distinct phonological change, and it's more common than you think. To linguists, it's known as Canadian Raising. Not all Canadians do it, but most of us do it at least part of the time.

To get technical, Canadian raising is the systematic raising of the diphthongs 'aj' and 'aw' to 'êj' and 'êw' (I can't find the IPA symbol on my computer, but the 'ê' there, a north american symbol, should be an upsidedown v, which is pronounced like the vowel in 'shut'... can I buy a wedge?) in front of a voiceless consonant.

The raising in about is harder to catch, so I'll give a few other examples. The pronounciation is given in phonetic characters (with the above mentioned exception).

'light' --- prounounced (by us) [lêjt], and (by other English speakers) [lajt]
'lied' --- prounounced [lajd] by all.

'lout' --- pronounced (by us) [lêwt], and [lawt]
'loud' --- pronounced [lawd] by all

Try repeating these pairs, back and forth one after the other, listening to the vowel sounds. In non-raised English (assuming that a person's dialect does not have any other modifications to these words), the vowel should sound the same. In Canadian Raising, a distinction can be detected.

The about/aboot comes from an exaggeration of the same phonological change as the second pair...

'about' --- pronounced [êbêwt] (by us), and [êbawt] by others.

That probably confused the heck out of any of you who cannot read phonetics, but hopefully it helped someone!

Edited to add: To the best of my knowledge, this raising is more common in Eastern Canada than Western, although I and many others whom I've had the chance to observe do it in a regular pattern... just on fewer words than Easterners.

brilliant...thanks for the suggestions!
I'm very much a, in the country but near to the city kind of person. I don't like it when it gets really miserable and murky in the winter, but i love snow and wrapping up warm. I also love fresh cool air when it's nice and warm. Lakes/rivers are a must and mountains are a bonus. Easy access to woodland would be handy too and i'm a libran so the city/town has to be aesthetically pleasing.

In fact whilst i'm at it...if there's anywhere in Canada with Unicorns and giants that would be most excellent. And a couple of hobbits wouldn't go amiss!!

Raydreamer, if you plan to live in the province of Québec, you will have to learn French. As a tourist who spends 2 weeks there, it's not a necessity, but if you want to work and live there, without some French, you'll be toast. The only ways out are to live in Montréal City (big anglophone community there) or to a small place in Eastern Township. This place is traditionally anglophone. The Royalists, who left the USA at your Independence War to live in Canada, established themselves there. There are a lot of francophones there now, so it's more mixed than it was. The Eastern Township are magnificent, looks like England (actually, the whole province has a european look), with the small rivers and hills and villages. It's very expensive to live there though. The day I'm rich I'll buy a house there.

Another proud Newfoundlander here! :drinking:

Although I also lived for several years in Nova Scotia and spent a year in Vancouver.

Most people say I have a 'non-accent' and I don't say 'eh' but my friends and coworkers make fun of my 'aboots' :toofless:

Here's a fellow canadian from Québec. Damn it's cold!!! I just hope we won't have an entire syberian temperature winter like last year. It seems I'm one of the rare French-Quebecer here. Bonjour!!!

Nope you're not alone! Salut!

Any recent sightings of your OgoPogo? I wish Burlington had a lake monster! lol

Last time I posted in this thread it was the dead of winter, and now we're at midsummer! How the time flies, eh?

Pretty warm night in Southern Ontario, but not the warmest.

Usually at night in the summer I end up having to sleep' skyclad and senseless from the heat.

Glad that tonight isn't like that

I talk to it from time to time, and I have a sneaking suspicion ol' Ogie is a spirit of a water dragon...Though that could just be my mind screwin' with me too :sleepybed

Another Newfoundlander here. I think that makes three of us... Sad. Oh well. My Newf accent's not too thick, I rarely say "eh," and I don't say "aboot." That's one of the words where the broad accent from the Northern Peninsula (where I lived until I was eight) mixes with the accent of the bay (central), where I currently reside (excpet for when I'm at university, then I'm on the Avalon Peninsula) and it sounds like "abowt." Hehe.... And I don't like fish. Or hockey.

I'm from Nova Scotia. I don't say aboot, and I don't say 'eh' without intending to.

Moncton NewBrunswick...now

I grew up in Ontario, lived 6 years on The Queen Charlotte Islands in B.C....Cold Lake ALberta FOr 4 Years...3 years in Quebec City...3 Years near Ottawa...now I am here..New Brunswick...to stay...I love it here.

However if you ever wanna see a majical place go visit the Queen Charlotte Islands (south Morseby(spelt wrong)) It's like another world or realm or something. Part of the reson it's special is becuase it escaped the ice age.

MheraPai

We don't hear the aboot because we hear it all the time and it's very suttle, when people try to imitate what they are hearing they say aboot but it's much more suttle then that...I say EH but only a bit.

Our Newfies and our Cape Britainers are fun to listen too...after a few hours with them you will sound funny to.

I had lots of fun imitating southeners when we drove to New Orleans

You may not think you do, but you probably do. When I moved from Halifax to the US a few years ago, people made fun of the way I said it, although it sounded perfectly normal to me. It's sometimes subtle, but there.

I went back a couple years ago and got together with a friend of mine so she could meet my husband. She had such a strong accent that I thought she was putting it on for my husband's benefit - but no, she was talking normal but I'd never noticed it before!

You been to Prince George before Raven?
I like Northern BC, it is pretty, but someho I'm longing to move somewhere new when I can.

I used to live in Dawson Creek... actually... I grew up there. :) Well, Pouce Coupe... but I just say Dawson Creek because no one knows what Pouce Coupe is lol

I remember taking the bus to school every day for 4 years from Pouce Coupe to Dawson Creek... and back! In -66 degree weather! w00t! :D

I live in Calgary now though. :)
