View Full Version : Whats in a name? (Revisited)

mol
July 10th, 2001, 10:46 AM
Ok. Its that time again. A lot of us have some strange names. Lets help people out by giving them some pronunciations and maybe even some meanings to our names.

And I will start.

mol

MOL actually stands for something. Its stands for Madman of Light. A name given to me by my Guide and Gaurdian (ANKOAT).

And it is pronounced like MAUL.

Not mole.

hehe it's good to be warned about what the site gods can do...

what's with christopher walken in all these music videos lately? Especially the one where he dances and matrixes it, hehe it makes me laugh every time.

to the name? Willow to mean represents wisdom, spirituality, and femininity, and Raven reminds me of Huginn and Muninn, Odin's watchers. Ravens are also traditionally messengers and mysterious. Both the Willow and Raven are also sacred to Hecate and also related to the Morrigan.

Mutated name from an Anne McCaffery Book that I read when I was younger. (K'ylara)
Looks really stupid spelled like that...

Great idea, Mol! (BTW, you'll be happy to know, I wasn't pronouncing your name mole. :D )

Emerald Sky -
Emeralds are my favorite gem. To me they represent perfect beauty, mysteries of old, and perfect love. Not to mention that green is my favorite color.

The sky represents absolute freedom to me. It is bigger than anything and so mysterious at times. It also represents great beauty and awe for me because it can look so different in so many ways.

Also, emeralds are green... when is the sky green? Generally when there is a tornado. Tornados have always had great meaning for me. I'm in awe of them, and have a strong spiritual connection to them.

fantine
July 10th, 2001, 12:33 PM
If anyone has seen the musical Les Mis, then you should know how to pronounce Fantine. For those who didn't see the musical, then it is "fan" as in the device that moves air and "tine" pronounced as teen.

I chose this name because I've used it for many years. I originally chose it after reading Victor Hugo's novel Les Miserables (in French then English). For some reason I've always been drawn to the Fantine character.

I will say though, a lot of y'all have some very interesting names. It shows great though and/or imagination.

Sometimes I feel like the Goddess really did whisper my magickal name to me...Raevyn is an extension of my mundane name (Rae), plus I have a special bond with ravens...my middle name is taken from the movie The Last Unicorn~she was given the name Amalthea in her human form. I am a unicorn afficionado (or at least I used to be), and The Last Unicorn is one of my favourite movies of all time. Cigány, my last name, is Hungarian for 'gypsy'. It is pronounced "tseegaan". My greatgrandmother was a Romany (Hungarian) gypsy in the early part of the century, and so I honour my pagan ancestry (although most Roms were Catholic, I know for a fact that my gr.grandmother was not) through the language of the Gypsies :)

My name seems really boring *but* it's actually short for Dappled~Moonlight, my regular online name (Dappled~Moonlight was too long). There's a site that I co-run, and everyone calls me D~M there, simply cos it's easier. I do have a more imaginative craft name, but it has a personal meaning and I prefer not to share it with anyone except the Lord and the Lady :D

I used to be really into unicorns too. I was the one with unicorn curtains, a unicorn bed set (pillows, sheet, bedspread), unicorn figurines, books, jewelry, and clothes, etc. The Last Unicorn is also one of my favourite movies.

I've been pronouncing your name "si-ja-ny".. Now I know better :P

My name is purty easy to remember. And how I got it...well...I asked the Gods for a sign basically. And, I had a very vivid dream that night.
In my dream there was a Hawk sitting on a wire above me. I was talking and gabbing with many friends (friends at the time) and then noticed the Hawk. I put out my arm for it to come to me. It said to me (not aloud, in my head), I will not come to you unless you remove yourself from distraction. And I realized then that my so-called friends were spiteful and unchanging...and I had to remove myself from distraction.
I gave myself the name ShyHawk to remind myself to stay focused and to remove myself from distraction when it is nessessary. I use it mostly with other Pagans...in other cases, I put my first name in front of it, making me Sara ShyHawk. :D :D :D Now you know me!
Since then, I moved about an hour away from my former town...(and though my location says Canton, I actually live right outside of Canton in the sticks)....things are quieter now, like i like them, and the Hawk has not been shy of me since. Such is my story.

Oh my, I should print this out and put it in my BOS!

Mairwen
July 10th, 2001, 11:51 PM
Was lazy and copied this off my website:

Mairwen: My patron Goddess pronounces this Welsh name "meehr-whun". "Mair" means the same as Mary, or Mari; wen translates to "blessčd" or "holy". Since accepting this name, I have learned that "mair" may also mean "Clan Matriarch" ~ but I cannot claim that title. I've been told that perhaps my Ego was "out of line" when I chose this name. Sorry, but this name chose me. I found it in an online list of Welsh names, and when I saw it on the page, I burst into tears ~ that's not ego; that's recognition of Self.

y Gwydd: Of the Gwyddon ~ or of the People of the Sacred Trees, or of the People of the Sacred Wisdom. :D Pronounced "oo gwith".

My name on this site is a part of my life. I am an ordained Priest in an independent Eastern Rite Catholic order. We have no allegiance either to Rome or to the various Orthodox Patriarchs. Since this site is religious/philosophical, the handle felt appropriate. This is the only site I use this name or avatar at.

I don't have a magickal name yet... although I'm considering using "Airyn" as a part of my name. I "made up" the name when I was about 9/10. I had an obsession with baby dolls and I loved making up names for them. This was my favorite, and I saved it for a very special doll that I made when I was a little older. Anyways, my best friend is Erin, and I just loved the spelling. I'm drawn to the name, although I don't know why.

You guys all have awesome names! And I love the name Skye!

Sometimes. I tend to (forgive me), bitch about things. It started on a web site that had an issue with Pagans and stated that Wicca was the most demonic, bloodiest, and evil religion in the world. I was a bit Tee'ed off by this but, I will say that I was impressed that they identified Wicca as a religion.

Otherwise, my spiritual name is Thoma. Not very creative but, that is it for the time.

EP - Glad to have you on board. Don't think I gave you an official welcome. Have some lemonade and we will talk a while. It is good to have an objective opinion here and about. I respect and look forward to your posts.

When I heard the song "Wildchild" by Enya, that felt like me. If you could see me, you'll see someone that's anything but wild. On the outside, I'm a almost 40, slightly plumpish, Chinese woman, wearing glasses...kinda quiet looking & nondescript. Hence also, the signature line. The name Wildchild resonates so strongly within me that sometimes, I'm surprised when someone calls me by my birth name.

Mistofthesea86. I like this name because it pretty much explains me. My whole life I have been interested in the ocean and mysterious. I have always believed that there was something beyond the mists of what we only see. Hence more of my interest to Atlantis. Then after reading a bit of the mists of Avalon, that intrigued me even more. So I decided to keep the name Mistofthesea. Because you never know what lies beyond the mist. And 86 because it is my birth year!:D

no, i'd disagree, but then i'm a mccaffery fan too and familiar with anne's naming scheme in the books, though in the books only male dragonrider's names were contracted as above. as a female rider your name would be given in full as you use it here. My name came to me when I was joining this community. I had no idea what to use since the last board I was on was not Pagan but book related. I finally decided to ask the Lady for some inspiration, after a couple of days, and it came to me in the middle of the night one night, that's when "stuff" happens to me. I'm a Stay At Home Mom so SAHM (pornounced sam) describes me well and I like the numerology association. I'm very drawn to it but I don't use it anywhere but here. :)

Kaylara, I love your new avatar. LOL!
Wildchild, I was touched by what you wrote about your name and you inner self. If you have not already read "Women Who Run With the Wolves- Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype" by Clarissa Pinkola Estes, I think you would really enjoy and identify with it. The title of the book has been joked about, but the book really is a very useful one, I think.
I feel Spirahl (pronounced spiral), was given to me. I don't know why but the pentagram/pentacle has never spoke to me as a symbol. I've always been drawn to spirals and what they represent. The "h" was added so that the name would match my birth number, numerologically. I always felt that I'd do better with the presence of an 8-value number anyway.

I chose my name after my favourite tree in my front garden.
It is in direct line with my front door, with glimpses of the fields and forest behind.
My favourite time of the month is when i can sit on my front step watching the moon moving behind the tree, such a beautiful site, and gives me a wonderful sense of peace and 'connectedness'.
I love my tree and am honoured to take her name.
Neighbours don't like my tree because they think the smell of the blossom is unpleasant and they want me to cut it down!!!. I now feel very protective towards her.

i love creative names that actually mean something else than an endless repetition of corrupted-into-oblivion jewish names. like my given name. booooring.

some decades ago i saw someone had named a pair of twins tuulikki and pilvikki. tuula is a common finnish name, comes from the word 'wind', adding the diminutive suffix kki we now have a 'light breeze', i suppose. [moi? a 'light breeze? hardly!]

the pilvikki stuck though, i somehow can identify with the changing moods of the clouds.

i do occasionally turn into a threatening nimbus and have a tempertantrum; get sloppy and soggy; drag my ass along the ground covering the landscape in misty swirls. i change shape all the time. my colours go from virginal white to deep purple and steely grey. sometimes i'm far away, sometimes too close.

and sometimes i just vanish.

Ok, this is taken from Myth and Symbol in Ancient Egypt by R.T. Rundle Clark

Now after some days the letter reached the Kin, the son of Re^, Great of Flood, Master of Food. When the letter was read out to him he gave a loud cry and sent an answer back double quick to the place where the Lord of All was sitting iwth the Company, saying "Why should my son be thus ill-treated? Was it not I who made you strong, for I was the one who created barley and spelt to nourish the gods, and cattle after the gods. No other god or goddess every did anything like it"

And the letter of Osiris reached the place where Re^ of the Horizon was, sitting with the Company in "White Field" in Xois. When the letter was read out to him and the Company, Re^ of the Horizon said: "Be quick and answer Osiris' letter, writing to him in reply--If you had never existed, if you had never been born, barley and spelt wold have existed nevertheless"

***

It goes on, I won't bore you, but I loved the story and that is where Xois came from... :D

Wyrdsister
July 12th, 2001, 02:04 PM
As you can tell from the text above my avatar, my name is Wyrdsister. It is actually a surname for me, but I have yet to find a magickal "given" name, so I just go by Wyrdsister for now. :)

Wyrdsister is pronounced "wierd-sister"; pretty basic (although I could tell you a hilarious story about Raevyn Cigány's pronunciation - but maybe I should let her reveal that herself ! ;)).

"wyrd" is a germanic ? norse ? word for "fate" or having to do with the fates, as well as meaning having control over your own fate or destiny. I like that. :)

"Wyrdsister" was originally comes from "wierd woman!!", something my Mom and I yell from time to time when we're in eachother's company, stemming from a private joke from years ago. I'd explain it here, but it would take awhile! :D

Anyway, I thought I'd originally use "Wyrdwoman" or "Wyrdwomon" for my surname, but it a way it still represents my Mom to me, as well as representing a particular time in a woman's life. So I thought "sister" would be more fitting as I'm younger. Also, the "sister" part really fits in with my Dianic tendancies and feeling a sisterhood with other women.

So there you have it! I am Wyrdsister, and now you know why.

Goddess Bless, all!

well my name is pretty boring...pronounced myth ril
it all started from playing D&D as a kid, I have an elf rogue that I named Mythrel, which was a play on the metal mithril...thought I was so clever, anyway, I played that character for a long time and grew fond of the name. Later on in life, I became an Everquest junkie(still play btw)... and the first character I made was a monk with the name of Mythrel...
at the time I was on AOL and wanted a different screen name to besides the one all my family and friends bomb with junk mail. So I took the name of Mythrel ShadowFox...couldn't understand why I chose ShadowFox but that became apparent later...so I began surfing the pagan chat rooms with the name of Mythrel...
about that time I got sick of AOL and cancelled the account and opened a hotmail account with the name of mythrel. My girlfriend got me hooked on MysticWicks and when I got here, I obviously kept Mythrel as my name. I kinda feel like it is an online magickal name in a way. I have a magickal name that I don't feel comfortable revealing here but this is me in a way. And the 2 characters that got this name fit as well. I tend to work with the shadows and the grey sides of life(rogue) in the search for tranquility(monk).

the shadowfox last name on the AOL account, was something that just popped into my head and I didn't know why?
I watched Legends of the Fall with my girlfriend the other day. It was the first time I had seen that movie...and it clicked in my head. I am originally from Iowa and my step father got into the rendezvous thing...bunch of blue collar white guys dressing up like native americans and sleeping in teepees all weekend long wearing buckskins and all kinds of fun animal fur. Well anyway, at the age of like 5 I was named Little Grey Fox....and I had totally forgotten about that...

alot of crap for one short name

October 24th, 2001, 02:37 PM
my name Shadowulfe(Shadow-wolf) actually stands for a few things in my mind.
Shadow because ever since i was a child i had a knack for dissapearing when people least expect it. I have always loved the night. The darkness has always been peaceful and comforting in my eyes.

Wolf- my spirit guide. my teacher. the wolf has always been my favorite animal. I have always seen the wolf as my constant companion and teacher. until i met Angelwulfe, my fiancee, i have always been somewhat of a loner and a drifter a "Lone Wolf" for lack of a better Term.

now as for the spelling of my name, i came up with that while reading Buckland's Complete Book of Witchcraft. It suggested that my given name and my spiritual name have the same Numerology.

and now you have the story behind my name!

Pheonix
October 24th, 2001, 02:51 PM
When reading the story of the phoenix when I was younger the author spelt it as pheonix and i've spelt it that way ever since. Pheonix is my magical name because on the night of my initation I saw an outline of the bird go across the moon. It seemed perfect, a sign form the sky and a good symblo of my "rebirth".

Saeryn
October 24th, 2001, 03:33 PM
My name is pronounced SAIR-ren. It comes from the Old Welsh name "Seren" which means "star". I have been drawn to celestial things for as long as I can remember--*especially* the moon and stars! :boing:

I've always been a stargazer and love looking at the night sky through my telescope.

I also find it darkly humorous that the name when spelled as "sarin" is the name of a poisonous nerve gas. But I still prefer the "star" meaning *infinitely* more.

Searyn is what I use for my "public" Craft name. I spelled it the way I did for numerology purposes (looks kinda cool that way, too). I've really grown quite fond of it! :D :) :D

BB,
~~Saeryn

Angelwulfe
October 24th, 2001, 06:01 PM
shadowulfe actually came up with that name for me, he calls me his angel and we're both really into wolves so thats how got the handle, i haven't really found a magickal name yet but thats what i use for now.  :) :p :elf:

Psyche Ague
October 24th, 2001, 07:00 PM
I was at my friend, Becky's, house and wanted to chat (I wasn't allowed to at my house for some reason and was bored, I think) so I got online and asked her what her screen name was. Hers was Artemis, which got me thinking about gods and goddesses. I'd always been obsessed with them, especially the story of Psyche and Cupid. I'd always adored Psyche, so I used that name. When I was in the Louvre last year, I found two statues of Psyche and Cupid and took a ton of pictures of them....:)

The "Ague" part means "trembling" or "quivering" or something like that. I thought Psyche Ague ("trembling soul") was a pretty cool name. The rest is history.

Oh! And Fantine...I can completely relate to you with your obsession with Les Mis. I love that play, too, although I always related to Eponine.

Demeter
October 24th, 2001, 07:17 PM
I pronounce it Deh-MEE-ter although I have also heard it pronounced DEM-eh-ter. Not sure which is the authentic Greek (although the authentic Greek could be pronounced "Fred" for all I know). This was my first magickal name, taken when I was a dedicant. When I was initiated, I became Eostre, and when I became HP, I became Ishtar. (I wanted to take Ishtar for this board, but somebody already had it. And had used it to make exactly one post. Grr.) I have already learned that I will have one more name change, when I reach croning, but that will not be for a while yet.

SpikesPet5150
October 24th, 2001, 08:13 PM
I don't have a magickal name yet... so I chose this one, to play on my 2 biggest obsessions...

Spikes Pet: Spike, from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.. he calls people Pet all the time

5150: Van Halen album.. gooood album.

Now I know what your name means! It's different than what I thought.

Ever since I stumbled across this board I thought your name was more like "Rad docs"-- maybe associated with a pair of rad Doc Martins (my fave boots).

Mea culpa! *blushes in embarassment*

"dracos"--How cool! Especially since it's also a very cool constellation. :D :D :D

Aengus McTeague
October 26th, 2001, 02:29 AM
Aengus; Celtic God of Dawn, patron of lovers. It means either "strong one" or "one path". Also because of my sig poem, "Song of the Wandering Aengus" by Yeats

McTeague; Scots for "son of the poet"

It started as just a board name, but I'm growing quite attached to it. If I'm ever initiated into a tradition, I might keep it as a craft name as well.

BB,
Aengus

Duo
October 26th, 2001, 08:51 AM
My name, aside from obvious anime origins, sprouts from a philisophical belief of mine.
I figure since I don't believe in heaven or hell, that this world is actually both. Whichever it is to you is whatever you make of it. Since it is both, and we see no angels or demons, then we are both angels and demons. We all have good and evil inside us, its makes us human.
So I am a Duo.

My username just popped into my head one day. A lot of names popped into my head. I just seemed to be more drawn to this one. From what little I've looked up on the net Maren Themah can mean
"bitter custom" or "sea queen". The sea queen thing is a bit freaky. I grew up (until age 7) in Miami, and spent tons of time on boats and in the ocean. And I refuse to eat any seafood, except tuna (family compromise). I'm not sure if I fear dead fish, or if I'm jusst really sad for them. I don't go into the ocean anymore, it itches. :P

Mine's pronounced the same way it's spelled, with the stress on the second syllable. A friend of mine has a zodiac for the Tuatha de Dennan. He put my information in it and this is the name it produced. It means path finder. Having Scotch/Irish blood in me, it was appropriate.

Storm
July 17th, 2002, 10:17 AM
I found a site that suggested names based on the numerology of your given name. I didn't care for most of the names and the ones I did like just didn't 'speak' to me but there on the bottom of the list was STORM. It seemed a bit comic bookish to me after seeing the X-men but I have always loved storms...severe weather makes me sooooooooooo hyper. Also I am a bit of a stormy personality. So it fit. I also visited a site that generated names just to pick from and there were last names with Thundersomething and names with Somethinghawke and none as Thunderhawke. Well I put it together and so I am Storm Thunderhawke. I didn't accept it right away though. I just wrote it on a piece of paper and put it on the fridge. The more I looked at it...thought about it... the more it just felt right.

I am not exactly sure where my name came from but I do remember going to a numerology site and reading something about finding your alternate name through numerology... so I did. Now, how the name popped into my head that I should check it at the site...only the goddess knows. ;)
(I only wish I knew what the names means*shrugs* )
Guess one can't know it all.. :-)

LunaWitch
July 17th, 2002, 11:41 AM
It's my internet name as far as I'm concerned.

I'm ruled by the moon (guess the name is self explanatory)
and Luna just sounds nice, (I think it would make a nice real name)

and, hey Storm...
I love your screen name, I have a cat named Storm. :D
My husband rescued her in a giant puddle in the middle of a big thunderstorm. She was just yelling her head off, so how could he just leave her there? So we adopted. lol ....She's such a cutie.

Emaleth
July 17th, 2002, 03:20 PM
The names I use are usually from books I've read and liked. Emaleth is from Anne Rice's "The Witching Hour". For those who haven't read or don't remember she was one of the Taltos race, a daughter of Rowan Mayfair, killed by her own mother in the end ;)

In the chatroom I'm Visenna. This is a character from a Polish fantasy novel, a mage and a healer, the mother of the main character who looks younger than he ;) Mages don't age in this book:D

Mithrea = Mithra + Rhea though in my head it's MITH ree uh

I picked it on a night when I got home from studying the Cult of Mithra in class. I tried to make it girlier . Didn't work apparently as I'm constanly pm'd asking if I'm male or female.

Scarlettvixen
July 17th, 2002, 06:33 PM
My name has a few layers of meaning

I used to be into chat rooms in a big time and had always used Chameleon - which pretty much explained my personality at the time. Then i got bored with the chat room I was using and started wandering. I came across Excites' Virtual Places and downloaded the software - (VP no longer exists as it did :() In this chat room you had to register yr nickname - Chameleon was taken and so were a few of the other occaisonal names i used.

I chose Scarlett as I love red, and I wanted to stop being such a chameleon lol - I wanted to project a more positive image of my self. However Scarlett was taken, the chat room wouldnt let me have b*i*t*c*h lol as it was a bad word, so i tried vixen - they have a reputation for being sassy! so thats how i got scarlettvixen!

I met my husband in this chatroom, we chatted for 6 months b4 we met and became friends in real life - we didnt start dating for another 6 months after we had met - we have now been married for 2 1/2 yrs. He still calls me Scarlett at times! Half the people at our wedding were online friends that we had met IRL, so they also call me scarlett

Pronunciation? SCARlett VIXen 2 seperate words with the empasis on the first syllable of each

Grey
July 17th, 2002, 06:47 PM
Grey pronounced just like the color.

Ive always been able to see things from many sides and kind of distance myself from everything. At my school people bring me conflicts and stuff to solve. Grey is the color of neutrality not blahness so dont mixem up hehehe.

also the first spell I ever did created a big wall of grey mist. it went away with the wind but it was cool for an hour or so.

My cat is a grey color.

A really big guy in grey appreared in my dreams the day before I came here.

I do not have a magickal name as of yet. The one I use here is because I live in and love the desert, plus friends say I move quiet as a shadow.

Haedis
July 17th, 2002, 07:53 PM
Haedis is the feminine form of Haedus which is Latin for "kid" (meaning "baby goat")and is also constellation. I think the name fits me well because goats are my favorite animal and I like the playful curiosity of young animals.

ChelleOfShadows
July 17th, 2002, 10:29 PM
:( I just used one of my SN's from AIM. I wasn't really sure if this site was for real or another hoax like many I have seen. Sooooooooooo, I did not feel comfortable using my magick name which is Khara O'Taryn which means Joy in Earth. Which is the name I was given when I was a baby from my grandfather because he said he knew I was destined to walk the path. My given name is Karen (pronounced car reen, what can I say my mother was most likely high) and of course I am one of the thousands of the Michelles born at the end of the 60's cause everybody loved the Beatle's song. Everyone calls me Chelle. NOT SHELLY...... just drop the Mi from MiChelle. Be that as it may I really would like to change my name for here but I don't know how :( so there ya have it...lol I'm Khara in Chat.

AutumnWitchie
July 18th, 2002, 12:13 PM
Gee, my first post uder this name! I started out here at Mystic Wicks as Autumn Gemini when I had my AOL accout. My hubby was let go from his job and we had to move out to the middle of nowhere, i.e. Bladen County NC. My younger brother offered me a name on his WebTV since the modem croaked on my computer and we can't afford to replace it right now. When I found Mystic Wicks again for some reason I could not remember my original name so to smplify all the names I use on line I now use Autumn Witchie(same as my old aol one).

Autumn is for my love of that time of year. Witchie, because I'm a witch. Of course the Gemini was for my Zodiac sign. Autumn is also a part of my craft name since I entered the Mother phase. I now use Autumn Tuulikki for my Craft name. Tuulikki is a Finnish protector goddess of the forests and it suits me. I thought these names were more earthy and stable for me since I seem to be a total Air head(when I had my birth chart done it was overwhelmingly Air so I crave stablity). It was odd to use something other than my given name at first(Ruth Elaine) as I am named after my mother's mother who I'm positive I am she reincarnated. But I felt the need for my Craft name as a symbol of this lifetime. So, there it is, my "logic" for my name

StarryDancer
July 18th, 2002, 12:43 PM
Well, mine is just as it looks; Starry Dancer! Chose it on the spur of the moment a while back, is NOT a magical name. Dancer, because that is what I have always identified with as my truest self; Starry because "Star" was already taken! And I have always loved the stars and everything to do with them. No animal guide for me, I go straight for the flame!

Kaylara, as I have read every one of Anne McCaffrey's books at least a dozen times, I feel authorized to tell you that Kylara first appears in the very first of her Dragonrider series, "Dragonflight". The sister of Larad of Telgar (who seems to specialize in troublesome sisters!), she was found on Search for Pridith, Ramoth's firstborn queen. Her general characterization was as a wanton, self-centered, kinky bitch who was responsible for nothing good in her misbegotten life. Something of a misnomer for you, so I'm glad you altered it to Kaylara!

I Rant and I Rave (e.g. RantnRaven). Mostly, though, I sit back and enjoy the lemonade.

My Spiritual name is Thoma - nothing big. Matches my birth number "3". Too lazy to find something else that might seem "cooler". My name is Thomas - just dropped the "S" and the numbers worked out . :D

The Goddess works in mystical ways, ya'know. :p

My name here isn't a "magickal" name to me. I just had to put something when I was filling out my profile here. I use the same name at MothersMagic because alot of people that are on that board are on this board, too. I guess the name grew in meaning for me. It started out as nothing special when I first picked it out. Now I kinda see: a moon reflected in the still waters of a dark misty lake. ::shrugs::
;) You all have such cool meanings behind your names.

Azure
July 20th, 2002, 09:47 AM
My name is actually Azure d'Or de la Cerise. All color, blue of gold of red. It's oddly enough a reference to alchemy from a dream I had, and the dream told me my life was about to change drastically. I'm still going through those transformations so I'm still using the name.

On BeliefNet, I shortened it to azurefire (fire for the gold and red) and here I'm down to just the really short form.

A natural talent or aptitude; a knack:

For being off-topic... :p
8O...Actually it was this one:

A solar flare.

I used to role play, and my character was a fire elemental. I was thinking about the name "Flare", but I didn't like the way it was spelled. So I figured 'Hey..why not add an i in there... it would still sound the same, but look better". So I did... :eyebrow: And the people I role played with liked the spelling "Flaire" better than "Flare". *shrugs* :) It just kinda stuck after that. I liked the name, and all the new people that joined the game started calling me Flaire, rather than my other online alias of the time (APJ...standing for Angel Princess Jupiter - long story short, it was a Sailormoon chat alias. :p ). Anywho... :)

Djiril
July 21st, 2002, 07:33 PM
Djiril is the seal-woman from Gordon Bok's story/music album "Seal Djiril's Hymn", who is killed by the man Hadjenek when she refuses to fish for him. I've always loved this album for it's strange and beautiful poetry:

I did not ask for beauty,
nor was it given me.
Sorrow I cannot give you,
for it is sunk in the sea.
I was not told of kindness ever,
only of hunger.
I did not ask for a master,
nor with fish will I feed one.

It's... my name. I know, I'm wildly original, aren't I?... I've been known to use the name Luna, or some variant of it, online, but I noticed that there were a few other Luna-type names on here and thought it might get confusing.

Kitari
July 12th, 2003, 12:37 AM
So many interesting names :)

Kitari is really my online name, my magical name I like to keep more private. Kitari comes from two Japanese words (I like working with the Shinto spirits) Kitsune, which means fox. And Inari whi is the god/goddess of rice and who is acompanied by two white foxes.

Kitsune is also Fox spirit, the Japanese have some very interesting lore surrounding the creatures. If anyones interested this site is pretty good: http://www.comnet.ca/~foxtrot/kitsune/index.htm

Foxes are animals associated with magic and mystery, the night and illusions. Thats why they appeal to me. My pen name is even Gwendolen Fox ;)

AradiaSupernova
July 12th, 2003, 01:37 AM
ooooooh I loved those books :) Personally I've been looking at using Eudoxia from Blood and Gold as a name...dunno why..just kinda struck me. Very cool you chose that name though :) *that was aimed at Emaleth* lol :)

Aradia Supernova was actually my first magick name, which has since been changed. This one meant a lot to me...Aradia being the goddess of all witches, whom I looked up to and respected the most as my teacher. Supernova is something I took because it described me well...something beautiful yet so destructive.lol :)

shiloki
July 12th, 2003, 04:25 AM
i already posted the explanation of my name somewhere else, but i guess mol decided one or three threads about names wasn't enough....

...so...

shiloki - a small, irritating parasite....

oh wait, no, that's something else....

shiloki - when i first came here, i was going to use 'shilo' which is the name of a character profile on the x-box game halo that i created for myself....but, when i typed it in i was notified someone else was already using it...which is odd 'cause i went to go look for it on the members list and couldn't find it....anyway....

then i thought i'd used 'loki' which is the name of one of my cats and is also the name of one of the norse gods, the god of mischief/chaos, and was very appropriate for the cat when he was small (he was in-sane) but now he's more like 'low-key'.....but being a wiccan/pagan bb, i figured that was already taken, as well....sooooo....i slapped the two together and ended up w/ shiloki (pronounced shy-LO-kee....emphasis on the 'lo').....which also works 'cause i'm terribly shy and...yes....i'm crazy....as in, institutional....

She-Arna
July 13th, 2003, 12:28 PM
My name is She-Arna, pronounced she-arna, but said very quickly. Instead of she - arna, it's shearna. Like the name Maryanne. It's not Mary Anne, liek two words, it's Maryanne, one word.

She-Arna
July 13th, 2003, 12:31 PM
Your first name of Shearna has made you happiest when you are expressing in some creative, artistic way, and not conforming to strict routine. In a large group of comparative strangers, you are quiet and rather shy, unable to express yourself, not really wanting to become involved in conversation. On the other hand, among friends with whom you feel at ease, you are expressive, witty, and quite charming. These contrasting natures make it difficult for people to understand you and can lead to friction in your personal life. You are deep, philosophical, and refined, but your extremely sensitive nature causes you to become depressed and self-pitying over any real or imagined slight. If you are not careful, people take advantage of your generous nature. You find the beauties of nature, fine music, art, and literature--all the deeper things of life--inspiring. The reserved, sensitive side of your nature brings aloneness and friction into your life, although you crave affection and understanding. You must guard against emotional excesses, which could result in depletion of energy, creating a desire for quick-energy foods. You could suffer through skin irritations, blood conditions, back trouble, and later, through arthritis. Heart, lung, or bronchial weaknesses could also result.
