Thousands of artifacts from the wreck of what is believed to be the pirate Blackbeard's flagship have been taken to a conservation lab at East Carolina University.
The lab is a joint project of the university and North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources. A formal dedication is scheduled for Thursday. Cannons, ship parts and medical instruments are among the thousands of artifacts from the shipwreck off Atlantic Beach being preserved at the university.
Jointly run by ECU's Maritime Studies Program and the Office of State Archaeology, the lab is the latest to house items from the North Carolina shipwreck. Officials say there isn't conclusive proof yet that the wreck was Blackbeard's ship, but evidence strongly supports it.
