Does anyone know if the new moon has a name? In Greek mythology, it has its own, little known, Goddess, but does it have an offical title?

Child? Birth? Beginning?
or is just the maiden at her youngest stage?
I dunno :)

I think that Calling it the child would be nice, or the Freedom, tho it doesn't really fit. Thoughts?

Hm I don't know. I just think of it as the time of new beginnings, which I suppose could be equated to a baby or child... whatever you would like to call it is up to you of course :)

Slvrnstr, I always thought Maiden, Mother, Crone and Enchantress. But no, I don't know of the Greek goddess you are thinking of. The Gaia/Hecate association made sense to me after I wrote it out on paper in the family-tree type format.

I made this into its own thread. I think I got the right posts where they needed to be!
Chat on. :D

I came acrost Her reading about the Family of the Sun and Moon. Nearia, "The New One", as in the new moon, is one of the wives of Helios, The Sun. She was honored during the New Moon when the Sun and Moon seem to meet. Her worship never took hold, however. She bore him Phoibe, who is a minor Moon Goddess with no time of power. This was all I could find in my books, sorry.

Beginnings of the week are crazy at my house, leaving me little time for anything...
I have brought my two-volume hardcover set of "The Greek Myths" down off my shelf and on to my fave reading chair. Thought I could use a real refresher. Haven't been able to sit and open them yet...
*sigh*

So
the maiden is waxing
the mother is full
the crone is waning
??????????????????
maybe it is the stages of life?
maiden growing
mother at the peak of life
crone deteriorating (getting old)
and the new moon means the break between cycles...
no life, the time beetween death and the new life?
kind of like the seasons... the cycle

I was thinking of this from R. Grimassi's "The Wiccan Mysteries"
"In the Initiate level her fouth aspect was revealed as the Enchantress...The new moon is the time of the Enchantress...Her nature can appear in any of the other three aspects of the Goddess, and can also be reflected in the human counterparts...for the maiden can be alluring and enchanting/tempting just as the mother can...the crone can be enchanting/tempting as well, attracting through her grace, knowledge and experience...Temptation, to a pagan mind, does not carrry a negative connotation and simply means being drawn away from ones originally intended course."

Here's what I believe, copied and pasted from my website
New Moon
Represents the hidden face, the fourth aspect of the Goddess. This is a time of meditation. The moon is in the underworld waiting to be reborn. A time of change and transition suited best to dark power magicks.
Waxing Cresent
Represents the Maiden, a time for setting new goals and wish magick. A time of bringing things to you.
Full Moon
Represents the Mother, a powerful time for acknowledging successful workings, completions, and honoring the God and Goddess.
Waning Cresent
Represents the Crone, a time for banishing spells, purging, letting go of bad habits, removing obstacles, divination and puification.
Blue Moon
When two full moons occur in the same solar month. A good time to give extra power to magicks that involve creativity, expression and productivity.
Faerie Moon
When two new moons occure in the same solar month. Also called the Other Moon or Sidhe Moon. The Other Moon is the reflection in this world of the Full moon in the Otherworld. It is a glimpse into that realm from behind the Moon of the Other People. When the Sidhe Moon shines, the witch has the opportunity to conduct the dark magicks that call on the Faerie powers, and seek the aid of the Sidhe.

In my readings I've seen the New Moon characterized as the Enchantress/Dark Mistress/Seductress.
The dark, hidden, side of the Goddess, that is not represented in the other three aspects.

Ok, this will sound a bit unusual, but I have come to associate the dark phase of the moon (as I've come to call the new moon) with the dark god. <shrugs> I don't know if I'm the only one that does that or not, but perhaps that helps.
