Merry Merry,
IF you all want to see a move wherein the actors and actresses actually say things like..... Welcome to the Service of the Goddess,
Then by all means watch the TV MOVIE
THE MISTS OF AVALON, on TNT cable tonight and tomorrow night . Here is the link to the website its OUTSTSANDING
http://tnt.turner.com/movies/tntoriginals/mists/

......and from the press I have read so far , they are portraying PAGANS as warm earthy people, and Christianity as harsh.....
"Mists puts a feminist slant on Arthourian legend, presenting it from the
perspective of Margulies' charachter, Morgaine LeFay. Traditionally,
Morgaine has been a villain, but this production depticts her as a
priestess
of the religion that preceded Christainity in Britian, resurrected nowadays
as witchcraft or Wicca."

The article goes on to further talk about paganism as it is depicted in the
movie and it's conflict with Christianity.

The article is by Stephen English and is copyrighted TVData Features
Syndicate, so I have a feeling that this article has apeared in many "TV
Guide" inserts across the US....
Love and Light and ENJOY.....I am having a MISTS PARTY for friends who dont have cable :>,
and am really looking forward to this

I just finished viewing part one. I've never read the book, but I thought the movie was visually beautiful, the acting good, and overall a really good watch. There were a few instances where things didn't seem right somehow, but I guess that could have just been my lack of sleep. I'll rewatch it on Friday.

I really wish I'd read the book now. It was strange, yet somehow comforting, to see rituals and hear words spoken to the Goddess onscreen.

During the Beltaine ritual, I kept hoping that it wasn't Arthur. I knew it wasn't Lancelot. My heart sank when the next scene was with Arthur asking about the masked woman, and then when Morgan realized it.

What did everyone else think?

I just finshed watching it as well, and I loved it. I have read the book, and it pretty much follows the same story. I also felt so comforted seeing the old rites on TV. I think that this is the first semi-accurate portrayal of the old ways that I have seen thus far. I have to give kudos to TNT... I will write them and let them no how impressed I am....

Ok...I'm kinda torn as to what I think about the movie version. Visually, it was STUNNING. The score was wonderful. Pretty historically accurate as far as settings..and it was GREAT to have the roots of our faith portrayed so nicely. But..I found myself playing the part of movie critic. The scene where Taliesen brings Uther to the court, in the guise of Goirlois...did ANYONE else see the HUGE inconsistency, when Igraine (who was in morgaines words.) going to die if she didn't get the herbs, appeared looking QUITE healthy at the REAL goirlois side when they brought his body in??? I don't know...that kept nagging at me. And it did veer away from the book, a little. Of course, I suppose, it had to. But..I also noticed they skirted a few issues. Like, in the book, Morgaine NEW it was Arthur, the morning after (or was it directly after) the incident. The movie seems to portray Arthur as more innocent than Morgaine in the issue, since she was the first to realize it..and kept silent. I don't know. Little criticisms. Perhaps I'm just picky. Overall..I liked the movie. I think I may have liked it even more, had I not read the entire series of "Avalon" books. I know they had to chop it, to bring it to film format and length..but there was so much I had hoped to see in the movie....that was in the books, that i'm not sure I will see at all.

Kevin the Bard, Nimue??? What of them? I suppose i'll have to wait and see.

Oh...by the way...one of the really great parts of the movie thus far..was the makeup done on Morgaine for the Beltaine Fires. I thought that was TOOO cool.

Hi all!
I'm a huge fan of the book.It was one of the first things I ever read that portrayed the worship of a Goddess and probably paved the way for my later becoming a Witch.
I thought the movie was good, and of course it doesn't do justice to the book, which is long and wonderful.Much is cut out,or changed.Viviane, for one, seems much more heartless than in the book. Also, when she travelled,Viviane didn't wear the pretty gowns, she wore boots and trousers and rode like a man.Arthur's running with the deer was very underdone, much more dramatic in the book.
I have a lot of problems when I compare the book to the movie. So I'm trying to see them as 2 different things and enjoy the movie for what it is,rather than criticize for what it isn't.

Merry Merry,
I just watched it three times LOL . The first time with my guests ,and it was delightful, the second time alone but calling my friend TANIS on the commercials LOL so we could talk about it on the phone ,and the THIRD time for the midnight showing for some friends who couldnt get here earlier. I realise that some poetic and artistic license was taken, but over all it was so very well done, I could go on and on. The costumes were magnificent ,the settings were wonderful. The only issue i would take with the entire thing was I would have made
the parting of the mists a bit more.... well real.....but other than that , I really cannot find fault with it. It was magnificently done.
It was so wonderful to hear people speak of the Goddess, and watch them deal with encroaching christianity. I hope that many more are done as well as this one has been done .

I've read the book and the movie is good. The book is soooooo much better but isn't that always the case.

I found it visually stunning! It was so beautiful! I love the building(s?) in Avalon even though in the book they are more like huts. It makes the castles look like children built them.

I found alot lacking in the Beltaine scene. That depressed me the most. I would have loved it if they kept even a little closer to the story and made it more ritualistic instead of the frightened virgin meets masked man type thing. I wish they would have shown her blessing him and calling the herd and greeting him as the Goddess instead of the girl. It wasn't as magickal as it could have been IMHO.

Besides that I LOVE Vivianne's costume! I don't mind that she is not wearing britches, her cloak is gorgeous! I love that blue!

We taped last night's and will watch it tonight. But could some one do me a really big favor??? Could someone pm me a detailed description of the last ohh, 5-10 minutes or so? My hubby and I were , ermm, *huge blush* trying to have some fun and I realized that the tape was rewinding itself at 9:53 pm. (This after being interrupted twice by my kids pounding on our door, ack!) So were are going to miss the ending :( I really would appreciate it! I will cry if I watch 3 hours and 53 minutes and then miss the ending.....

Ok...Arthur and Morgaines son, Modred, comes to court, to be one of Arthurs companions. Secretly..he is plotting the downfall of Arthur, so that he may be High King in his stead. On a day when Arthur and the Knights are preparing for battle against the Saxons, Modred reveals to Arthur that he is his son, in hopes of getting him to proclaim him, his heir. Guinevere overhears, and runs to the chapel, where she is met by Lancelot, who intends to comfort her. Lancelot comforts her, and they start making out. Modred catches them, and sets a trap. Guenevere waits for lancelot in his chamber, and is pounced on by modred, who holds a knife to her throaght. Lancelot comes into the chamber, and is surrounded by modred, and all the knights. He is to be taken before the King, and charged with high treason. He fights, and escapes with Guenevere. He brings her to Glastonbury, and continues running. At Glastonbury, she meets with Morgaine, who is there healing from an arrow she took from the saxons. She tells Morgaine that Arthur is in grave danger because of Modred. Morgaine takes off, to save the day. She comes upon Arthur engaged in battle with the saxons, who, btw..Modred is now leading..and then Modred and Arthur fight eachother, one on one. Modred stabs arthur, arthur stabs modred. Morgaine cradles modreds head in her lap...and Arthur, now dying, asks to be taken "home" to avalon. They get to the mists of avalon, and Morgaine cannot part the mists. She thinks it is because she and arthur have been rejected for their rebellion against the Goddess. She tosses Excalibur into the lake, as an offering to the goddess, and the mists part long enough for Arthur to see Avalon once more..then he dies, and the mists return. Morgaine is forever banished from avalon. She winds up in Glastonbury, amongst the nuns. Where she decides that the Goddess has never faded..only remade into another form...that of Mary, mother of Jesus. The End.

I for one, found the second half of Mists of Avalon, extremely dissappointing. If I had never read the books, I think i would have appreciated it a great deal more. However, having read the book, there are SOOOOOOO many things that were left out, that I think are KEY elements of the book. For instance..the Grail. There was NO mention of the Grail, what-so-ever. I think the Grail sequence in the book was a key element, because it cleared up a lot of misconceptions about the Goddess...the grail sequence showed that she is "ever-loving"...and "good". That is left out, totally, of the movie.

I also, was disappointed that it portrayed Morgaines marriage to The king of Wales as a happy thing. In the book, she started off with friendly feelings toward him, but wound up miserable. She turns to Accolan as her lover, and is one of the only happy times in her life. Through her romance with Accolan, she regains her Magickal powers that she had lost while in rebellion against the Goddess. This is neglected in the movie, as well.

And in the end, it made Morgaine seem weak, because she was forever banned from returning to Avalon. In the book, she does return to Avalon, and sinks far into the mists with it. As morgaine-le fey.

I think that this is what upset me the most. Besides the story of Kevin the Bard, and the story of Nimue being totally left out...the movie made Morgaine out to be somehow weak, or...as a person who is having to deal with the responsibilities of her rebellion to the Goddess. She is punished, by not being able to return to Avalon.

I do not think, that Morgaine sinned, at all. I think she reacted as any person who was put through such horrible things, would react. She never turned from the Goddess. She simply rebelled against Vivianne. So...the Goddess that I know, would not punish her. In my opinion, Karma, and such, are done with, as soon as the lesson is truly learned. Morgaine saw the effects of her actions, she wished wholeheartedly to return to Avalon, and the Goddess I know, would have enfolded her in her arms, there. Not punished her.

All in all..I think the movie really downplayed a bunch of key elements, and strayed far from the book.

But..as I said. Judging it as a movie, all on it's own, I could have ignored some of the few inconsistencies in the script, and enjoyed it. Oh..if only i hadn't read the book...FOUR times..lol.

Danustouch-- you really hit upon some of the things I had trouble with, and to think they're all fixed in the book. Where's my Barnes and Noble account? :D

The second half was less interesting to me because I didn't care all that much about Arthur and Gwen--I've seen their story in so many different versions, that it was just kind of another one. The real story, to me, was Morgaine's, and they didn't focus as much on her.

The ending was extremely sad to me because Morgaine was left out of Avalon, and I didn't think the Goddess would punish her like that. Joining a convent at the end was sad for me as well, because poor Morgaine would probably not participate in many Beltaine rituals, and her power was lost.

Okay, NOW I'm going to have to read the book again, because I am sure that it was Igraine that left for a nunnery, and not Morgaine...Morgaine (in the book) became the Lady of Avalon after Raven's passing, and carried Arthur's body to Avalon with her after his death....grrr.....now I have to get it back from my best friend.....

Igraine left for the nunnery in the movie as well. And Morgaine brought Arthur's body to Avalon. But after she did, the Mists closed up, and she drifted down river to the monestary, and Igraine found her, and they were both living in the nunnery with Gwynavere (sp?)

they should never have called this the Mists of Avalon but based on the book. The ending was soooooo not right. If I hadn't have read the book I would have enjoyed it much more.

Merry Merry ,
The fist half had some forgivable flaws, including making Vivianne TALL and an overbearing matriach ( sorry but cheeesh wasnt she
supposed to have subtle power ) but the second half for goddess sake!!
I think they made the CLASSIC MISTAKE movie makers make when confronted with a huge amount of material, the pile in as much as they can and make it confusing , leave out essential parts of the story line...... I mean .......
why even include her marriage to King Uriens if you dont include her return to the old ways ?? and maybe they thought the affair with Accolon would have been too much?? So they left it out, and sort of made Mordred over into his character for the fight with Athur. Possibly , people who never read the book have no problem with this, but for those of us who have read it , its confusing I think.
I still love it and will watch again , I believe they are showing it again this weekend , and I will try and sort out some more of my reactions and responses. After all, how many shows do we have that even mention "Goddess" .
And to nitpick just a bit more ......lol..... did anyone else think the Beltane dancers were a bit stiff and too close a reminder to Native American style dancing ??
Ahhh well..... I still think over all they did a great job,and I thought the last part of the where she talks about the "Virgin " being another reincarnation of the Goddess was well done.
I didnt like the"punisment" part either , as in the book she does return to Avalon as the Lady of the Lake. Ahh well , there is always the SERIES!!!!!!!! LOL
Perhaps they will call it " THE LADY OF THE LAKE" .

In the book, Igraine left Camelot to go to Glastonbury. However, she said it was not because she was a specifically devout Christian, but rather, she wanted isolation. She wanted to be free from other peoples schemes and plots. Or..I think that was the gist of it.

I don't remember Morgaine ever going to be with her there, though in the book, I believe Guenevere did. It was near the time that Igraine died.

And where on EARTH did they come up with Igraine becoming Mother Superior??? That was HIDEOUS! LOL.

I think that they kind of did the story from a Christian/Catholic point of view, overall. I would have liked a lot more attention to be paid to the Pagan side of the story. Did anybody else catch the moment when Morgaine tossed the Sword into the lake..how it started to shine, in the form of a cross? No..not a sword..but a cross..if you look closely? It was almost as if the movie version was saying..."Yay...we converted the pagans!!!!!".

And WHAT on earth was that scene where Morgaine and Vivianne entered camelot? All the heads on pikes, crucified people, etc?? Where did THAT come from? It certainly wasn't in the book. Perhaps they were incorporating some of the themes from Mallory's version of the story? Thats one of the feelings I got. There was even a part where i sensed echos of themes from the musical "camelot". LOL.

I did like what they did at the end...with the statue of the Goddess becoming a statue of Mary. I think that's the only thing that kept me from writing an angry letter to TNT. LOL.

Oh..and ONE more thing....Modred did NOT kill Vivianne. Balin, or Balan Killed Vivianne. The foster brother, of Viviannes own son. Because he thought her a murderer. The way they did it was a cheesy way out of giving more details about the book. LOL.

Oh..I could go on and on and on and on!

Swanspirit
July 17th, 2001, 03:26 PM
Dearest Danustouch,
I saw the cross, and the other things you mentioned , too. I thought ONO the MOVIEMAKERS took over and look what they DID!!!!!
But you know its a story and will be told and retold in many forms
Even your quote from Chief Seattle isnt really from him , did you know that ?? it was in a MOVIE!!!and written by an Indian Agent .
I guess we cant have everything and perhaps the controversiality and that lack of actual pagan knowledge prevented them from giving it some of the authenticity it lacked.
I see it as a beginning , and am wondering howmany people willlook further into the truthand the mysteries because of a story they saw.
I just wish they had avoided the punishment and judgemental theme..... sooo very "christian " in flavor.....

Hi all!
I have to say the second part was disappointing. It's a good movie, but it ain't nothing like the book I read! They seemed to gloss over the parts where the Christian leader Patricius(Patrick?)was so judgmental,so hostile to the pagans. How Morgaine becomes almost an enemy to Arthur when he quits taking the Avalon banner to battle and uses a Christian one instead. How Excalibur is taken from Arthur because he broke his word to Avalon.I would loved to have seen the scenes where Morgaine got lost on the way to Avalon and wound up in the realm of the Faery for what she thought was a short time, but wound up being years where everyone had aged except her.And of course, the whole story of the grail, with the Goddess enraged that her cup is used in a Christian ceremony..Galahad isn't shown but once, and it's at the beginning. He was Lancelet's son and Arthur's heir in the book.(Before Mordred shows up)
I've read the book 3 times myself. It really is beautiful.I'm going to reread the whole trilogy now(The Forest House,The Lady of the Lake, and Mists).
But,as a movie,I guess it was ok.I didn't expect perfection,I just had hoped they wouldn't clean up the Christians so much.

Ok. First of all, I've read the book. Need to read it again, because I don't remember ALL of it, but it was wonderful.

Second. Saw the movie/miniseries. It was pretty damn kewl. I want their costumes :hearteyes I REAAAAALY want their costumes!!!

Third - WTF WAS THAT?! Ok. Great book. Great movie. Same thing? not really. It was like they took the book, mixed in a couple of different versions of the arthurian legend, and called it the same thing!! Where the hell was Kevin? he was so kewl! What about the SCABBARD?! HELLO?! The priestesses did not dress like genies. The would have frozen their little butts off. It's britten, for the love of kami-sama! And. . uhh. . . did I just miss something in the book. . . or could someone tell me why the hell Raven was friggen 3/4 bald??? T.T;; they ruined raven, she was so freakin cool. She was one of my favourite characters!!

I found it really really funny that Morgaine was taller than Gwenhwyfar. now THAT was funny. . . And Mordred looked awesome (until he got really psychotic, which is when I kinda started getting just a little freaked). He looked a great deal like I imagined him! It was kewl!! . . . . -_-; and then he turned into an axe murderer in need of some nice pink pills with a wolf-skin on his head. . . I was like "DAMMIT, he's not a wolf!! the line has nothing to do with wolves and deer, it's "what of the king stag when the young stag is grown?" dammit!" ^^; really annoyed the snot outta my mom, who'd never read the book. >.< and what was with the masks and clothing in the beltane scene? They were NAKED dammit, no masks, they KNEW who the other was!!!

and. . . perhaps I missed this chapter in the book. When did Morgause curse Gwenhwyfar? Yes, she hated her, but when did she do the whole melting-of-runes thing? If she did it at all, it certainly wasn't before she was married!! and did anyone else notice how Camelot was *the* origional castle? 'scuse me? ARTHUR BUILT IT, YOU LUGHEADS! And the priest on the cross, in that gruesome scene. . . from that point on I was cowering through the entire ending >.x *twitch* :shaker: :blushake: :wah: and how viviane and morgause died!! WTF WAS UP WITH THAT?!?! Dude, Mordred is one of my favourite characters! they mad him go from a slightly tweaky, almost-genius type guy to some sort of psychotic, evil. . . monster! He wasn't that evil! sheesh!!

uhh. . .was I smoking something while I read the book? when did Morgaine get shot while riding back to camelot? And they totally neglected the idea that camelot was dissapearing into the mists, too. didn't do anything with the tree.

AND :wah: :wah2: THEY LEFT OUT THE FAE ALLTOGETHER!!! DUUUUDE HOW THE HELL DID URIENS DIE, THEN!? WHERE DID THE SCABBARD GO? Why did A) morgain throw Excaliber B) it turn into a cross C) the goddess supposedly regect her D) Arthur live to see Avalon E) Viviane be put on a burial pyre. . . . theres more, naturally.

T.T;; why didn't they call him Taelisin?? What happened to Kevin? I liked Kevin! He was kewl! There wasn't a single harp in the entire movie!! :wah: and what the heck was with Igraine being alive. . . MOTHER SUPERIOUR?! WHAT?! SHE'S DEAD!!! I swear, I was yelling "S/HE DIED ALREADY!! THE'VE BEEN DEAD FOR A LONG TIME!!" more times in that movie than anywhere else. And ther ewas only like one scene where we saw Gwenhwyfar for the pious, PMS-ing, obcessive-psychotic BITCH that she is! When I saw that scene, I was like "WHOO HOO THE MOVIE'S GONNA GET BETTER!!!"

. . . -_-; and then it all went downhill. . . . DUDE and the scene where Gwenhwyfar was in bed with Lancelet and Arthur. . . T.T;; she didn't take off the charm like she was supposed to! It was a sex scene :wah: that was annoying!

They didn't use any of the childhood names! Gwydion and Galahad. . .two of my favourite parts were how they changed names, and how their children were named after them! T.T;; no mention of Atlantis, either! *cry* *atlantis "buff" ;) *

And the battle at the end? Exqueese me? Baking powder? Battle? Mordred screaming like some psychotic beserker? Morgaine riding in on a horse to come see them kill eachother? what? o.O;; could that have been FARTHER from the book? oh wait -_-; dearie me, yes it could. Reminds me of the whole "who is Gawain/Galahad/Gareth/Balan/Balin/etc etc" T.T;; they took out all the kewlest characters.

And we never got to see Lancelet sleep with Gwenhwyfar's (was it cousin or sister? ^^; I can't remember). It was like he just imagined it clear out of the blue. -_-; weirdos.

I'm sorry, Morgaine was what, three or four when the book starts? The actress, while good, was way too old. And when did morgaine sneak out of the castle through the window? -_-;
Morgause was too old, too. And I didn't get to see her sit on Gorlois's lap! T.T that would've been funny.

I *LOVE LOVE LOVE* the woman who played Viviane. She was kewl. She's one of my fave actresses. ^^; hehe And I think the woman they chose for Morgaine was good too. . . Isn't she the one who plays on ER?

:bad: arthur's supposed to be blonde, and so is Uther. . you know, like white hair blonde? -_-; bakas. . . . And Gwenhwyfar is SO much bitchier. . . dammit what was with the scene where she's riding with lancelet in the open forest and they get attacked, and so she escapes with lancelet and he kisses her. . . -_-; bakas.

And wasn't she a young girl when she accidentally came through the mysts in avalon? And they weren't up on top of the mountain, they were down in the marsh-y areas. And morgain didn't pull her through, she put her back. -_-; dammit.

And where the hell was the entire what, chapter? where Gwenhwyfar gets kidnapped? What happened to Igrain just dropping Gwydion into Morgaine's lap and going off to play with Uther? And the parting scene, while very cute, well acted, and nice. . . DID NOT HAPPEN!! So much crap was added! And while some of it was ok, and some of it might've been an ok addition to the book. . . .it was NOT a good trade-off for what they excluded!!!! :bad: And correct me if I"m wrong, but didn't the priestesses wear very simple, dark clothes that were often mistaken for nun's clothing? What was up with the floaty materials and bells and everything else. . . hello, it's britain. There's mists everywhere. I think the WOOL that everyone NORMALLY wore would've been a lot more comfortable for them. . . And they didn't show the little sicle knives, they didn't show anything of morgaine's coming back into her priestesshood. . . T.T dammit I missed the fae the most! And that ending. . . so f*cked up, not EVEN funny. DUDE since when could vivian make things burst into flames, and then make it rain? When did priestesshood involve casting Fire2? (final fantasy reference, there. . . )

. . . . if I hadn't read the book, it would've been a WONDERFUL movie! I loved the costumes, the acting was great, the storyline was a bit broken and rushed, but it would've passed. I would've really loved it! Unfortunately. . . I read the book first ;) hehe

But it was well done. Totally inconsistant, but well done.

My husband rented the movie out for me this past week-end and I really enjoyed it.......but, I've never read the book. Now after reading all ya'lls post.....I reckon I'll have to read the book now! Also I never knew it was even on TV till I read this thread. We live in a remote location and can't get cable here and we choose not to have an antenna. We rent lots of movies and I;ve been itchin to see a movie like this.

The movie was wonderful but don't read the book and then watch the movie. You have to watch it objectively and not compare it with the book. The book is definitely better...more details.
