View Full Version : What kind of pagan are you?

Just a little curious. I got to thinking one day while trying to define (more like describe) what makes a person pagan and what it is while trying to come up with examples. I tried to remember all the kinds of traditions I could think of, and I'm sure I missed like, a dozen or so, so just pic other if I missed you.

Personally I am Shaman (tho a very inexperienced and untrained one at that. So far all I've done has just really been going on intuition and whatever knowledge I could get from books and the internet. I have yet to meet (in person) a pagan (let alone a Shaman) over the age of 25. There's an herbalist near my house (not my boarding school) who my mom says might take me on in a summer apprenticeship, but other than that, I don't see any other training being possible for a kid under 18 (there are times when being a teenager sucks! )

I voted Wiccan and other. I consider myself to be an eccletic Wiccan with interests in Celtic roots and Druidry. I do what I feel is right and sometimes that is not the Wiccan way which is why I voted Other (and i'm not referring to like, hurting someone or something, I honor the Rede).

I voted Fairy and other. I don't consider Druidism == Celtic. Druidism is certainly Celtic but not all Celtic is Druid. Anyway, I consider myself Celtic Reconstructionist with a bit of Celtic Traditionalist thrown in. Hence, I put a vote in for the gentry as well.

I voted other, I am a witch but not Wiccan, I practice a very eclectic sort of herbalism, if that makes any sense, lol

how do you explain to others what you, yourself having trouble defining? it can be very difficult at times trying to explain to people that not all witches are Wiccan

(there are times when being a teenager sucks! ) lol it's not always a picnic being a grownup either

I'm a free-lance pagan. I started out heavily into celtic traditions, now I'm more into energy and consciousness and I've picked up a lot of buddhist and hindu influences. We all make it up as we go along , what fits you just fits you:)

I think this type of thread has been done before...but I still like seeing the diversity under the title "pagan" and also the other was getting cluttered.

I am a Satanist.

I chose 'other'. I'm a solitary practioner of magick, however, I don't adhere to any set religious system. I don't pray, I don't invoke gods/goddesses, and I don't even necessarily believe in deities. I have my own ideas on spirituality that don't really fit into a religious framework, and my ideas are always changing as I learn more about the world and myself.

For lack of better words, i consider myself and ecclectic pagan. If i put all my beliefs together, doesn't really match close enough to identify it exactly with what i've seen. I see many similarities in alot, but not enough for me to say, yeah, that one. 'Course, I haven't seen them all, but as of right now.. that's what i'd call me.

I voted other. I don’t fit any known label. I lean towards historical worship of the Roman Gods, but I’m not a Roman reconstructionist—I regard myself a neopagan with his feet fully planted in the 21st century, and I use such modern means as trance, house and rave music to enter an altered state of consciousness. I’m also a soft polytheist, unlike most reconstructionists and rather like the Hindus and Vodun. But I believe all the Gods and Goddesses, although aspects of the one Divinity, are absolutely distinct and unique (and real—not archetypes), and I don’t believe in one God and one Goddess like the Wiccans. And I don’t do magic and spells either, but concentrate on votive worship much like recons.

With all that complicated description, is it any wonder I don’t fit any label? :p

I voted other as I am beginning on the path of a Celtic Reconstructionist, specifically Scottish. I say beginning, because this is actually a new start for me. For the last five or so years, I was just your general pagan type with strong animistic tendencies, ancestor worshipper, and former panentheist. Not to mention that I have my roots in the Quaker movement, of which you'll find pagans in the more liberal branch.

since your poll offerred wiccan (small w) rather than Wiccan i was tempted but there is still the conotation of an organization. the word pagan comes to english from latin paganus meaning country dweller, as opposed i suppose to city dweller who is disconnected from the earth and nature. wiccan (small w) originally meant wise woman, and since the more i learn the less i know, i can't even claim that.
at the moment i consider "religion" to be so personal a matter that there must be at least as many different religions as there are people. which is still way too many of both for my taste.
i guess that still makes me other.

My Pagan beliefs are generally nature-based, and I'm definitely into green magic and herbalism. I follow some wiccan (though not strictly) and celtic (though I'm technically not celtic) traditions.

My beliefs are always evolving from day to day, so I can't really tell you what sort of Pagan I am. So I guess I'll just leave it as, I'm a solitary pracitioner with a polytheistic symbiotic panentheistic philosophy.

I voted Wiccan - Because I am A Wiccan: I follow the wheel of the year, and I believe in the Wiccan rede & 3 fold law. I also follow the Charge of the Goddess & God.

I'm very Eclectic though, I take a lot from everything. I love to learn, so I didnt want to limit myself to one path. Maybe one day I will - but right now I'm at a place where I'm taking in from all sorts of traditions & resources.

I'm mainly influenced, however, by the Celtic Tradition, Kaballah & Christian Mysticism.

To make a long story short - I'm an Eclectic Wiccan!

I think this poll was a bit limited. I'm sure a lot of people would have selected "eclectic" if it was offered. I'm an Animist myself. Anyone who praciteces Bon, Shinto, or Hindu could select 'Animist' if it was offered.

An Animist believes all living beings are ensouled or have some semblance of spirit which enlivens them. It's a pretty basic Pagan belief without subscribing to any specific path. So it would be safe to call me your basic Pagan. :)

Formally, I've beleived in God. Just... God. Not a Christian God (that was years ago)... but lately I've felt an odd calling to... a goddess. I think I've been spending too much time here :-p

Hi -
We have an incredible amount of religious diversity here. Perhaps I should describe my beliefs to add yet another color to the tapestry.

As a Naturalistic Pagan, I believe that science is the best way for us to learn about the incredible universe we live in, and that I won’t believe something without good evidence for it (like evidence from scientific experiments). As such, I don’t believe in any gods except as archetypes. I celebrate the 8 Sabbats with family and loved ones so as to focus on this life – indeed, on this moment. I put the respect for other people ahead of religious differences, and attend a UU church to discuss the paths taken by others.

I’ve described the path in a little more detail at www.naturalpagan.org, and there is a thread about it in the Paths section, at http://www.paganforums.org/showthread.php?t=57102 (plus a link to my main webpage below). I don’t think this is a path that most Pagans will identify with, but it works well for me, and can be useful for people (such as reluctant spouses) who find some things they like in Paganism, but don't like other ideas (for instance, they might not think magic is real).

may the sun warm your face and the ground cradle your feet!

Pretty much Nordic. As far as the names I use anyways.

More specificly, I believe that everyone and everything has a spirit, from the flowers in my garden to the mountain ranges, from my alarm clock to the whole of existence. This kind of matches with some Japanese beliefs in some ways. So I tend to address certain spirits as "spirit of the forests" or "spirit of the river" etc. Though when addressing the sky or the cold weather I refer to Odin and other members of his pantheon. The Norse gods seem to enjoy Montana.

I'm also a seer, which could potentially fit into many denominations except for Christianity. (I was at a christian summer camp once, and I started giving tarot readings to my friends. The camp counsellors weren't too happy with me). :viking:

Since the title Pagan was foisted upon all those outside the Judaic-Christian-Islamic triumvirate more than a millennium ago, the term defies specifics. Something caused the state in which we find our thoughts and experiences, the finding the truth of that something, or the finding of faith that such exists is fundamental to most entities deemed as reasoning on this planet. Each path is unique and therefore any name or title should be acceptable. That a name or title is used by many makes it no more powerful than a name or title chosen by a single entity.

When I first started identifying myself as "pagan" I probably would have answered Wiccan. And even though I still closely identify with Wiccan principles and beliefs I'd be inclined to call myself an eclectic solitary now (sounds better than rogue hedge witch ;) )...in all truth the best answer I can offer is that I follow my own path and that's quite satisfactory albeit hard to hang a label on.

I honestly don't know. I don't know enough yet to commit to a particular path.

I don't have any specific category, I believe different things from different paths.
Plus, I can't choose if I wanted to since I still don't know how I feel about the god/s/ess/esses issue, I believe in at least one creator but that's all.

I'm far from catagorical. I try to envelop many ideas in my own path, though the closest description I suppose I could come up with for myself woulf be a Green Witch.

I voted other, but many of my practises, beliefs and ideals are Wiccan, although it's my own version. Being a 'solitary' I tend to make it up as I go along - and mostly it works too.

I am a strange kinda pagan.

I don't do much for any of the holidays except the Fall Equinox. For that I fast for 3 days and will talk more often with the gods and do more internal inspecting than what I normally do. I take time to size up the year spiritually and think about what's coming. My path isn't easy. It can hurt deeply sometimes. But it is a path I will gladly walk even if but only a handfull know and believe it. I believe in all gods. But I bow to none. I learn from all and welcome them as family. Balance is very important in my path.

The only thing I will use for anything more than just a talk with the gods is a bowl in which I place my written request in and burn the request. It even has a cover. I have but 2 pieces of jewelry that might be considered "religious". A small "medicine" bag that holds two stones for me that my Sissy gifted me. That bag represents my Mother. An Egyptian necklace my husband gave me for Xmas. It represents my Father. And a bracelet my husband just bought me although isn't religious is for me to help calm my strange energy fluxes and my wild brain. It works so far. :lilangel:

There are no books I need to read. My Parents will guide me and teach me all I need to know. Although I am curious sometimes and check and dig and tunnel around to try and find answers to questions I sometimes have. My Sissy says I have a young soul. I work on it and try and get through. Although sometimes I feel like an infant and sometimes I feel older than the mountains.

Recently there has been a transition for me...

I would call myself a Catholic with Pagan/Wiccan influences.

I know, quite odd.

peace and love,
amber

That's quite interesting because I think that is where I stand now. (Well, rather a Protestant with Pagan/Wiccan influences.) I am still relatively new, so I guess by default I would be here.

I picked "other".(Which seems to be the popular choice hehe!)

I'm an Eclectic Pagan. Although that term is starting to not really fit me. Eclectic sounds as though I've taken ideas from all sorts of Pagan beliefs. But in reality I haven't. Yes, some of my beliefs are the same ones of certain Pagan paths but often times my discovery of these beliefs came from discussions and general pagan research.

Not to imply that I'm afraid of being Eclectic. I know some dislike the term cause it implies being something to the effect of a "copy cat". But I don't see it that way, diversity is my spice of life and what's wrong with having a broad belief system that mirrors other the beliefs of other paths?

But yes, in short, I'm an Eclectic Pagan.

I'm more into energy and consciousness

I'm fairly free lance. I'm more into energy and freelance, and have eastern tendencies that came from mostly Chinese Medicine, Chi Kung and Shiatsu.

Dude, I'm gonna wake up this sleepy thread, because I just love saying this so much: I'm a Pagan Pantheist. I have Naturalistic Pantheist beliefs, and I practice Reclaiming-tradition witchcraft.

Good times.

I'm a scientist first.... like all my formothers, an ecologist... only this is the 1st generation where there's a name for that and a living in it... previous to that they were healers, amateur botonists, rock hounds and 'good gardeners'

thus...I'm a traditional hedgewitch.

I come from a long line of herbalists and woodswomen healers. I've been lucky, we are very long lived, so I've know 3 generations of them.

We all have green thumbs and what my great grandmother called "animal magic".. in that animals aren't afraid of us... and well.... talk to us.

(Not like "Hi how ya doing, Bob?" sorta talking... but we seem to have some natural/cultural ability to read animal body language. for ex... Last week a wild healthy bird let my daughter pish it in and it allowed her to pick up, it even perched on her finger for a while before it flew off...)

maybe its just that we have been farmers and woodswomen so long we smell like them and just 'get ' them.

when I discovered Wicca I realized the Rede was the moral code we had always implicitly followed... I celebrate the wheel of the year .... but my tradition has no prescribed rituals that aren't eminently practical ones about keeping cakes from falling or the chickens in lay... clearly... Gardener was a man and didn't get his traditions like I did... in my Baba's kitchen and on her sacred walks.

Ok, I just read back on my previous post in this thread, and while I stand by most of what I said then, I now need to add that I'm no longer solitary, I'm predominantly Wiccan and work with a group, and am going to be leading a group of "trainees" soon.

What kind of pagan are you? (http://mysticwicks.com/showthread.php?p=733812#post733812)
I consider myself a Solitary Wiccan, with an eclectic pantheon. I honour the Lord and Lady under many names, but I see the many gods as separate and autonomous manifestations of the God and Goddess, not simply aspects of them. And, unlike some, I do view the Gods and Goddesses as real beings, not simply thoughtforms or archetypes.
