It's ok to eat a little (and I mean little) lettuce on a cheeseburger, just as long as the burger patty is 100% beef and out weights the lettuce and other non-meat products on the burger by at least 7 times.... what would that make me??

I think about half of my food is meat, and the other half is everything else. Unless I'm eating Chinese food, in which case, less meat and more veggies drenched in yummy sauces.

I honestly think that if I were a vegitarian, I would starve. Unless it's Pea's, Carrots or starch (potatoes, yummy) then I don't want it anywhere near my meat!!!! :)
Seriously, I usually stick to birds (Ckn, pheasant, duck, etc.). I have burger (usually elk or deer) on average 1 maybe 2 times a week. And maybe once every two months do I have a nice steak. Tuna once a week and some kind of pork product once a week. We eat a LOT of pasta's. No fish (eeeeewwwwww!) but I LOVE everything else that comes out of the ocean.

Meat eater here!! I love veggies, all types (except cauliflower--yuk), but I have eaten meat my whole life and don't plan to stop now. Lots of chicken, and lots of pork, as they are leaner. But I adore a good steak and I like it RARE. I once told someone--if it ain't mooing, I ain't chewing!
Seafood--ewwwwww. I think that's a psych thing because we used to fish all the time when I was little and I just hate the smell. I eat fish maybe 3 times a year, oysters never as I am alllergic to them, and shrimp only fried. Actually, I really enjoy fried shrimp. And lobster, yuummm. but no grilled shrimp, boiled shrimp, etoufee, bisque, etc. Blech!

Well, the majority of my diet does not include meat but I do eat some, chicken fish or beef once a week or so. Every now and then I'll break down and have ham or bacon even though modern hog farming revolts me. Beef and poultry isn't much better and I cannot remember the last time I had any lamb.

i never buy meat. i only eat fish and sometimes bird when im at my moms or with friends. a lot of them still think vegetarians only eat beans which makes it hard for them to cook something decent when i come over so they ussually make something with chicken. i can live with that as long as its bio.

I like my beef so a good vet can have it on it's feet in 10 minutes!!!!
I also have a firm belief that if I'm willing to eat it, I'd better be willing to kill it myself!!! While I don't like store bought meat (an ex used to work at a slaughter house)... I eat too much meat not too. But I'll hopefully be going hunting this season. (and i'm going on Atkins...lol) And one day when I have land... I'll raise my own animals... if I can do the dirty deed... I'll be doing it. If I can't take the life of my animal friends... then I'll have more mouths to feed and will be going vegitarian. But that's a ways off.

I love alllll food, I'm a foodie!! It's all about taste for me...if it smells good, I'll try it once! Really, I'm like a human vaccuum, there is precious little I won't touch, but oysters are one of them. I don't care for crab or lobster, but will eat anything if there's shrimp involved!!! Mussels are yummy too. I love my steak med. rare and really salty ::drools:: with chocolate milk. And veggies are my friends, though I hate brussel sprouts and hominy...hominy is evil and must be destroyed. I love the birds and fish is great.

Omnivore here. There's not much I don't like, actually. I like beef, pork, chicken, (sorry Klucky) fish, crab, shrimp, lobster, dairy, eggs, fruit in general, and most veggies, (except for swiss chard, brussels sprouts and celery root). I'm overweight, so I'm trying to cut back on meats and add more fruit and veggies.

Well I am an Omnivore but I'd have to say that most of my diet consists of meat. Probably 3/4 of it anyway. I really don't eat enough veggies though. You need to be careful and to incoropate proteins like fish into a vegitarian diet sometimes, or else it can lead to Jaundice. ( The current Dalai Lama got Jaundice )

I read a magazine article that said if you really wanted to go veg, set a date about a month hence. In that month, incorporate a little more of the vegetarian fare each week. It also said, if you still want to eat meat once in awhile, that's okay too, because any change you feel is positive is good enough!
(and no, I'm not a vegetarian....maybe someday!) :)

I've been vegan for 7 yrs....I actually never intended to be one I just happened to see if I could spend 5 months being one (from new year until my birthday in may-just to prove to myself that I had the determination to so something like that). Iloved the food so much and felt so much healthy (I'd suffered endless stomach upsets for years) I stayed vegan and would never go back to not being one

Actually, there is no need for you to incorporate any kind of meat product, including fish, into your diet in order to get enough protein. As long as you eat a varied diet (like, not always microwave popcorn for lunch, as I have been known to do), you will get enough protein. If you decide to beome vegan, you may have to supplement, especially since vitamin B12 is found exclusively in animal products...although it is also found in things like fortified breakfast cereals.
The American Dietetic Association has put forth a position paper on vegetarianism (http://www.eatright.org/Public/GovernmentAffairs/92_17084.cfm). A few tidbits follow:
Protein:
Although some vegan women have protein intakes that are marginal, typical protein intakes of lacto-ovo-vegetarians and of vegans appear to meet and exceed requirements.
Iron:
Studies typically show iron intake by vegans to be higher than that of lacto-ovo-vegetarians and of nonvegetarians, and most studies show iron intake by lacto-ovo-vegetarians to be higher than that of nonvegetarians.
B-12:
Unless fortified, no plant food contains significant amounts of active vitamin B-12. Foods such as sea vegetables and spirulina may contain vitamin B-12 analogs; neither these nor fermented soy products can be counted on as reliable sources of active vitamin B-12. Lacto-ovo-vegetarians can get adequate vitamin B-12 from dairy foods and eggs if these foods are consumed regularly.
Well, just thought I would step in for a minute on that one, sorry. *dusts off little soapbox and stores it in the closet for the next person to use* :D

I don't know about the low-carb "craze" -- now that there are more and more "carb-friendly" foods available (some) people think they can eat as much as they want of anything they want as long as it's "low carb." Balance, my friends, balance.
I've lost 40 lbs in the last ten months by eating low-carb and I feel much better for it. I was quite the sugar junkie, not a healthful diet. Now, I'd rather eat fresh broccoli with butter and fresh lemon juice for my carbs than a cookie... which in my case tended to be a pound of cookies...
I definitely eat a lot of meat -- eggs -- cheese -- cream in my coffee. I avoid sugar like the plague, and refined flour whenever possible. Fortunately, I love the 'good for you' stuff.
My sister married a vegetarian and converted. Her two kids have been raised vegetarian and are beautiful, healthy, and bright.

I think that was because on the protein count, my post directly preceding contained quite a bit of info. It would have been dreadfully redundant for ~monk~ to repeat it all!
As for the other, I believe it was a statement of opinion.
Perhaps you needed a pointer on some other topic? Because I'm sure one of us could help if you can't find the information you were seeking. :)

I think that was because on the protein count, my post directly preceding contained quite a bit of info. It would have been dreadfully redundant for ~monk~ to repeat it all!
Your information was on-topic, relevant to the original question, and backed up with sources. I had already read it, and it was good. It covered whether adequate protein can be obtained from plants (it can, with care over amino acid balance)
I didn't see that ~monk~ was really responding to what you had said, it seemed more about high/low carb or high/low protein diets not sources for protein.
As for the other, I believe it was a statement of opinion.
Perhaps. It came across as 'here is a jibe and I am not going to discuss it' and I tend not to be over impressed by that 'drive-by shooting' style of debate. Its too often the refuge of those who can't argue their case based on facts and so stick to ridicule.
~monk~ then posted that there were older threads that contained a lot of info -I hadn't seen those, but was glad to hear that a case had been made somewhere . A pointer would have been nice, rather than assuming everyone had read them.
Perhaps you needed a pointer on some other topic? Because I'm sure one of us could help if you can't find the information you were seeking. :)
Thanks - I happen to already know a fair bit about general nutrition (my first degree was in biochemistry) and about the hi/lo protein/carb debate (my partner runs a Pagan LoCarb list). It was more a plea for postings to have a factual basis than a request for specific information. But I will be sure to ask you if I need further data, thanks for the kind offer.

 The current Dali Lama also happens to eat meat.
And last I checked jaundice wasn't caused by a lack of protein in the diet. It's usually caused by difficulties with the liver, often associated with toxicity from drug use (either pharmacological or illegal), or hepatitis. Malaria can cause jaundice as can pancreatic cancer or gallstones.
There are a small percentage of people out there who are so anemic that eating meat is not an option. However, it's a very tiny group. The rest of us need to just suck it up and admit that eating meat is a choice and a habit from the last two generations or so.
*shrugs* I have no problem with that. I make a choice to eat meat, if people want to try and turn that into me being a bad person, whatever.

I used to want to be a vegetarian, because I felt bad for eating dead animals, but then I realized two very important things. One, I am an animal, and as such, I am a part of nature, and an ecosystem. Animals have to kill to survive. Humans have always depended on meat AND vegetables. Two, all life is sacred. Plants are just as sacred as animals. I have to kill to survive.
Also, meat is just too yummy to give up! :P I love veggies, too. Aw, heck, I just love food!

Ovo-lacto vegetarian (for around four years), though the ovo and lacto part is in moderation. I have plans of becoming a vegan once I move out. It's all for ethical and health reasons, though more for ethical reasons.
Health-wise...I've never felt better since quitting meat, more energetic and...well...all around better! And it's not difficult at all. So many people seem to think it would be difficult, but...eh, I eat what I've always eaten, except without meat. *shrug* And there are meat replacements for people who like meat. I feast on those...and they're great! Well, depending on brand. :P I recommend Morning Star. And for soy milk...Silk brand, hands down. Other types are nasty (especially Soy Dream! *gags*), but Silk is addicting and delicious. Especially the chocolate milk... *drool*

You missed one classification. I eat both vegetables and meat. Not surprisingly this is called a balanced diet. I do the bible diet, in which God gave us all green vegetables and meat for food.
Hold on, I'm not a flaming Xtian, but the diet makes sense to me :reading:

I gotta say, I wouldn't want to be vegetarian again. I have bad food habits so I really need the meat, besides it's just yummy. ;) And in my culture... "What d'ya mean you don't eat meat?! Why not?? Are you stupid?! How can you survive?!?! OMG you're gonna be sick, are you okay sweetie?!" LOL

I'll admit that I like my steaks to be almost cold in the middle. Medium rare to rare.
However, I make sure to thank whatever animal died for me to have that meat. I visualize their face and wish them peace. I've only ever been in the emergency room three times in my life - the last time was after I was a strict vegetarian for two years. Despite taking all of the vitamins, drinking protein shakes, eating protein bars and the like (never gave up my usual gallon of milk per day), I still became deathly ill. The point was, I had to start eating meat again. But that experience taught me a fine lesson in balance - how everything is okay in moderation. I eat meat three or four days a week, sometimes it's red meat, sometimes poultry, most of the time seafood. As long as I'm respectful and cognizant of the sacrifice that was made, I see no problem in it.

hmmmm well i got these canine teeth for a reason and I don't want to waste them but i eat alot of other stuff too so i guess i am an omnivore. I figure that the animals i eat wouldn't have been born if it weren't for the fact that someone was willing to do so, that and by doing so i am making sure that the rancher is feeding his family as well. I will not eat sushi, rabbit or veal. veal is just plain cruel and a waste as well. rabbits scream like people and well sushi most of it really freaks me out.
I also make it a rule to not eat anything that still has a face, except crabs but i wont stay in the house when they are being steamed that depresses me too. :hairraise :dinnertim

Well, I can't vote because there's no option for me. First of all, I don't know a human that is a true carnivore ... all humans eat something other than meat.
Humans are omnivores. Some prefer meat in varying degrees of doneness .. and some prefer no meat at all. But the human body developed to eat both meat and plant matter.
Me? I like meat. I love beef, and chicken, and pork, and even seafood.

Meat. I'll try anything once. I like a lot of vegtables as side dishes, or condiments, but on a burger, cheese, and that's it. Red meat is my fav, with chicken coming in a close second. Aurin makes a mean Lemon-Garlic chicken...mmm,mmm...
I'll also eat just bout anything that comes from the ocean. Not a big fan of mussles, but clams, scallops, shrimp, lobster, fish, crab...that list goes on and on. Sushi is another ewwie, but I have tried it...that way my mother can't hit me for not liking something I haven't tried.

I used to be vegetarian but I found that going to restaurants I was offered the same things. Vegetable Burger, Vegetable Curry, Penne Pasta with a Tomato and Basil Sauce, Cheese Pizza, Baked Potato with Cheese or an Omelette with Cheese. I got sick of every single one of these things. Why was I a vegetarian in the first place? I basically didn't like the taste or the texture. Anyway ... to cut a long and boring story short ... I now eat Chicken and Turkey and a whole world has opened up. Chicken Burger, Chicken curry, Penne Pasta with a Creamy Chicken Sauce, Baked Potatoe with Coronation Chicken :crazylaug.
I've tried allsorts mind you. Hate shell fish *shudders*, beef's OK if it's overdone ... like shoe leather and bacon's OK if it's got no fat and is smoked. Oh ... I like finny haddock too.

After 5 years of being a vegi, I have begun to eat chicken and turkey again. This was somthing that I battle with for months. Yet if your craving something that bad for that long, I fully believe your body is trying to tell you something. So now I eat chicken or turkey 2-3 times a week, and only if it's been farm raised.

My conscience bugs me because I genuinely love almost all animals and I just feel guilty eating them, but I have medical conditions that make an all veggie diet almost impossible. I just can't digest much in the way of dark greens, and there are a lot of other things in a vegan diet that really mess with me. I do like meat besides. I can't help myself sometimes. I get a real craving, particularly after my period.. OK, need to rant for a moment...
I think avoiding buying animal products from factory farms is as important and elementary as not torturing your housepet.
It shocks me that people can see any sentient being that is being kept alive in today's large-scale livestock/poultry farms and continue to support these industries.
I know that there are people that disagree, so I won't turn this into a pointless argument, but I needed to get that out there.

Why is it that the "sentient" animals that so many vegetarians feel guilty eating have no problem eating other sentient animals? Humans are the only creatures on earth who chose their meals with their emotions instead of being true to their nature. Vegetarianism is unnatural. Even the Dalai Lama understands this and himself eats meat.
I do not look down on vegetarians. I admire anyone who choses a path and follows it with conviction, so long as they resist the temptation to claim that it is a higher truth. There are no higher or lower truths, only different truths.

actually most food animals are herbivores, not carnivores, although a few are omnivorous. for the most part, carnivorous animals don't make very good meat, from what i've been told.
it is an assumption on your part that all vegetarians emotionally choose to exclude meat because they feel guilty, or that they claim the moral high ground. i've never met two vegetarians that had exactly the same reasons for their dietary choice; our reasons are many and varied. i posted some of my reasons in the other vegetarian poll.
i have not seen any vegetarian on this board claim a higher truth, trash meat-eaters, or make assumptions, demand explainations for why omnivores choose to inclued flesh in their diets. i have seen omnivores, although thankfully, not a majority of them, make obnoxious posts about "saving vegetables" and whatnot. i realize we are the minority on these forums, but i feel no need to justify my dietary choices, nor demand justifications of others, and would be grateful if you and other omnivores would show us the same respect we are trying to show you, please. thank you!

I reread my post and could find no evidence of disrespect in it. None was intended and, indeed, I made that abundantly clear. My question was just that, a question. If you have not made your choice based on emotions then it was not directed at you and I do not understand why you took offense. I certainly did not post to insult or to start a fight. I tend to be quite careful with the words I choose and am, therefore, sensitive about being misunderstood, particularly when that is because my words were misread.

I did not say all... you did. I also reread the previous five or six pages and there was at least one post on each page that indicated in one way or another that they had done the very thing I pondered. I am not being critical, I am in search of knowledge.

I have somewhat unusual justifications for most of my choices in life and, like you, do not feel obligated to justify them to others. However, I did not walk up to a stranger in a restaurant and drill them on their lunch choice. I posed a question to which I truly desire enlightenment on a FORUM. If I cannot ask and be answered here... then where? If asked, I am unfailingly happy to share both the logic and the belief system that play roles in my decision making process.
Once again, my intent was not to insult. If you were, I apologize.

Usually when I mention this to my family members who eat meat (or to someone who is cooking for me/trying to offer me food), they get defensive. I don't understand why. I guess I could vote the last option but here is a list of stuff I don't eat:
1. Grains of any type (rice, wheat etc)
2. Dairy
3. Legumes (Beans, Peas etc)
4. Tubers (Potatoes, Sweet potato etc)
5. Sugar
6. Salt
7. Cashews
So what do I eat? Meat - lots of it, Vegetables (usually green and leafy, or root), Fruit and Nuts (with the exception of Cashews and Peanuts).

I was diagnosed as wheat and dairy intollerant. I found the diet while searching for recipes.. The reasoning behind it makes a lot of sense (i.e. our bodies have not had enough time to evolve for foods that entered our diets due to agriculture)...
It has made my asthma better (almost 100%), I no longer get yeast infections, I have more energy and I've been losing excess weight..
I feel heaps better being on it.

I voted "Vegetarian but sometimes eat fish". I grew up fishing with my grandfather and my grandmother cooking fish and rice all the freaking time so I never gave that up while I was living at home. I'd probably give it up now, but I still have it about once a week because of protein issues.
I can't stomach eating any other types of meat though. I don't like the thought of it, and I don't like the taste and texture. I think I'm just picky because there are a lot of veggies I won't touch either (onions and peppers for example). My diet is mostly grains and fruit. I do eat eggs and dairy as well, though how much changes from week to week. Some weeks I will eat tons of cheese, others I won't want to touch it.

Im a light Carn. mostly chicken & fish. I havent sworn off Red meat compleatly, but given a choise I almost always go for the other, whatever it is. That is unless I can get a REALLY good cheese burger, with hot peppers and onions. And I love Asian food, which often has beef and pork.

I love to eat meat! But I don't eat it that often because it's expensive and my parents don't buy it a lot. My favorite meat would be Pot Roast or New York Steak. I like to eat a lot of fruits though! Turkey is my favorite white meat. My favorite fruit would be apples and my favorite vegetable is celery (with peanut butter!)
One of my best friends is a Vegan though! I love to eat the really special foods that she makes whenever I go over there, but I don't eat her sprout sandwiches!

I eat meat, but not a lot of red meat. But I like game meats a lot as well, rabbit, pheasant, quail, game hens etc. I don't eat any seafood at all - nothing that comes from the water. I like veggies, but not a whole lot. I love fruit and nuts though.

Already answered the other thread on this, but what the hell.
Omnivore with STRONG leaning toward carnivore.
The main non-meat products I eat are rice, potatoes, miso/tofu, salad, broccoli, spinach, seaweed, garlic, onions, tomatoes and pickles, and any non meat ingredient that goes into random dishes. Aside from that, all non-meat products are mostly dairy.
I prefer beef and fish. I eat alot of beef. Preferably steak tips raw and unseasoned. (beed tartar as my mom calls it) or as a rare steak. I like burgers too. And I LOVE Black Angus Roast Beef. :cutie:
I prefer my fish raw or fried. Saltwater fish and salmon = Raw. Freshwater fish = fried. I like sea food in general. Clams, muscles, shrimp, oysters, scallops, octopus, squid, cuttle fish, lobster ect. And will eat those pretty much any way they're prepared.
I also eat Pork and Poulty. But they're not my preference. With the exception of pork fried rice and bacon.
And the meat portion is the primary portion of my meals and primary ingredient in cooking.
So... Yeah, I'm largely carnivorous.

Carnivorous thoughticus rex (raaargghghgh and ragged belching)
I tried the veggie thing for about two days, and got sick of it. I like my cow to moo when I stick a fork in it...
I lived on a farm when I was a kid, and we were poor to boot. My Dad had some livestock, so I guess that's how I learned my love of the previously quadrapedal. Of course we had a prominently sized garden too, so I like veggies too (except spinach, eggplants, and beets). The cool thing about living on a farm like that is I got the true organic stuff. No chemicals, or anything. Hell, we had a well dug into a spring, that was the best water I've ever tasted, and it definitely puts that bottled crap to shame.
Now, saying my piece on the livestock, just wanna let it be known that we didn't pin up our cattle, they roamed and grazed to their hearts content, if we needed to take one, we picked the older ones, and moved it well away from the general population to do what needed to be done. We also made sure it was a quick end. I might love those things that move, but I do admonish animal cruelty (defined as putting an animal through suffering [like slitting the throat of the beast while it's still kicking]). That's how I lived, and as such when you're as poor as we were, you don't get too much of a chance to choose what goes on the table....
Why am I building a defense and disclaimer up? Just because of my bad track record with alternate diet peeps that seem to have fangs polished for human prey [that isn't to say all of them, just most of the ones I've met]. Example: I was talkin' to someone when I was camping once. Brought up that I liked steak, next thing you know, this girl started snapping viciously at me for eating... she was a ppp... some word that starts with p that means strictly fish... there were things I would have told her had I wanted to stoop to her level, but that does go against that whole live and let live thing.

:) Good to hear. If I could be sure that this was the way everyone treated livestock I wouldn't feel so compelled to be vegetarian.

I was a vegetarian who ate who only ate fish for *quick count on finger* about 13 years, starting in 6th grade. I ate meat maybe twice a year, typically on Christmas Eve and Easter (not because I love turkey, which I don't we didn't eat anyway, but because my dad's side are Spanish and not eating chorizo, blood sausage, tripe, and garlic pig's feet is not really an option...plus they're tasty). About a year ago I gave it up because my views on the ethics had slowly changed. Now I eat most kinds of meat (ground beef still messes with my stomach), but not very much of it. For instance, in January my fiancee and I have purchased meat only once - a three pound leg of lamb that has been stretched for four meals worth of roast lamb with potatoes and another 8 meals of lamb curry. And I try to buy only free-range, organically fed meat.

I am a vegan and never felt as great as I do now. I had been a meat eater for 32 years and I was raised in the south of the United States. I changed to Vegan because the way animals are treated in farm factories. Go to Meetyourmeat.com to truly see how your food is treated and also what they allow to be processed as food.
I think the lastest food crisis could be averted if we all started eating vegan or at least vegitarian. Did you know it takes a ton of grain to feed a cow to produce one pound of meat. Just think of the possibilities if we stopped eating meat and fed the world with it instead. Not to include the land being used to produce said amount of grain. There is more to this but this is just a little bit of my info. BTW for anyone thinking you would starve eating vegan. I am in great shape. I workout and am in the process of putting on lean muscle and not having to deal with the extra fat that meat gives. Which means I am healthier and I get enough protein from plants like soy beans, lentils and Quinoa to help me grow the muscle I need.

Agree in principle, but:
not all land used for animals is suitable for crops - sheep can graze where you can't plant crops.
Most grains are low-protein - we'd need to grow things like soya and other legumes to provide for that.
Not having a pop at you or other veggies - I support your moral decision, but, as you said, there's more to it than there first seems.
I'm an omnivore, but try to eat only ethically reared meat, so freerange eggs & chicken, beef, etc. Don't eat veal due to production methods.
We generally have couple of meat-free days aweek.

You do not really want to be a vegan then. It's ridiculously easy to start up, just buy or loan a vegan cookbook. Or even easier, do a search for Vegan diet in google.com . The only reason someone has trouble starting a vegan diet is because they really do not want to.

Omnivore, as are we all, even those that deign to eat only foliage.
I like meat; could not live without it. It's been a part of my feeding habits all my life, and I personally cannot comprehend not eating it, for any reason.
I eat grains and such, too, though I don't each much vegetables.
Love potatoes, though; eat 'em every time I have grilled chicken or shrimp; and in their French Fry form, they go good with anything. Especially pork ribs, which I could not live without. XD

My husband and daughter are both meat eaters, so when I make dinner(or breakfast or lunch, lol)I need to make two seperate meals...one me and one for them, unless they're both into what I'm making for myself, thenit's just one meal.

It may take 1 tonne of grain to create 1 pound of beef (I'm not too sure about that figure though...), but it also takse 1000 litres of water, 1 tonne of water, to grow 1kg of wheat. Not to mention all the chemicals farmers use for disease control, the fertilizers that they use, land clearing, that creates the problem of dry land salinity, a problem which is far more crippling that global warming, or a food crisis...
Did you know that in Australia, there is even an ad campaign at the moment urging us to go veg to save the enviroment?? They argue that because livestock industries produce a third of the world's greenhose gasses, that it should be stopped.. This ad is sandwhiched in between the "we love out lamb" ads and the 'red meat, we are made to eat it' ads... So, not REALLY all that effective...

Its a personal choice. Part lifestyle/health choice, part my respect for animals.
I just don't see the reason for eating meat anymore.

I am an Omnivore as the Creator gave me the ability to eat and digest both plants and animals, though usually my animal protein comes in the form of eggs or cheese. Personally, I don't really like meat. I would much prefer a fried egg to a steak. When I do eat meat, I try to make sure that it has been killed in a humane manner, as is done in kosher and halal slaughterhouses.

That said I don't eat fish. Can't stand the stuff. Once in a great while I'll eat tuna, but that's about it. I haven't had popcorn shrimp in years, maybe 5, maybe 10? I can't stand the idea that I'm eating an entire organism and all it's insides. EWW. Yes I know the spine is removed, but I'd prefer all the inside organs a shrimp has to be removed before I eat it.
Salmon? You say sam-on, she says sal-mon, I say cat-food. Although I will say my friend, and member here Eirwen is the only person who can make a salmon dish I can stand.

I'm definitely an Omnivore...I think I'd get bored if I only ate veggies. And besides, who am I to deny myself the bountiful gifts of mother nature that was provided for us to devour and enjoy? :mmm:

I'm an omnivore. As much as I love meat, cooked in different styles and with added ingrediants to make it sweeter or spicy. With meat I also enjoy adding one or two of these flavours on meat dishes: Ginger, mint, tarragon, honey, onions, peppers, apple sauce, berries, salad cream, horse radish, lemon, crisp/fried cabbage, chopped carrots, tomatoes, cinnamon and curry paste. I can't go without chocolate either. I like bread and cheese, or apple and cheese. I love burgers, sausages and minced beef. I also love chicken, fish (I'm not too keen on tinned salmon), a roast steaming and sizzling in juice touched with some fruit or salts. Agreed.
I third that statement. We were created to be omnivorous. Everything in life is food for something else. Every living thing eats and is eaten. This is the cycle of life.

Heh fun to see everyone's views.
I'm a billy goat. At least that is how my mom puts it. I was raised Vegan (strict) until I hit Highschool, then I went Vegetarian and would have cheese or milk in stuff like ice cream. Never eggs.
About a year ago I first started eating eggs but it's a rare thing and only when I am craving them so badly the body demands it. Usually one or two eggs a month is all I want.
I did the 100% raw vegan diet for a year. Eh. It was good but you had to EAT all the time and you couldn't travel or anything if you were worried about contamination..not to mention it killed my social life. I figured it out but it was annoying.
I tried eating meat at points in my life and the results were always the same. Extremely sick from it no matter what it was or even just a little stock. Not worth it.
I'm pretty much a pure vegetarian, I like to cook which is in my favor but I just eat simple. I have a little milk or cheese and the rare egg and I'm good. However that's just what works for me. I got the boy I work with eating 2 grilled chicken breasts a week at school because he needed the muscle, and I worked in a steak house for years as a waitress/bartender.
Food. It's what's for dinner. You catch the road kill I'll graze on the plants I know growing on the side of the road. Everyone's happy!
BTW the side of the road comment is why my mother calls me her Billy Goat even all these years after HS. I used to go "oh there's mustard! And yucca, and nettle and..." "Do You need me to pull over so you can graze like some..some..goat?"
"Yes please!"

I’m omnivorous like all human beings, although I will admit that I prefer to eat meat more than fruit or vegetables.
Also I have a question for the vegetarians out there. Several months ago I tried to change my diet and become a vegetarian for a number of reasons (e.g. help the environment, be kinder to animals, and live healthier etc.) However upon switching to a no meat diet I found that I started to feel ill; by that I mean I lost my ability to concentrate, my energy levels dropped sharply, and generally I felt weak all round. Now my question is.
Is this a normal reaction to switching to a non-meat diet?
If anyone can explain this I’d be grateful, as this experience as marred the whole idea of vegetarianism in my view.
Thanks and great poll.

My honest guess is that it had to do with the levels of proteins, fats, carbs, calories, and energy in that your body was used to being switched up. If you really want to do it go slow, figure out one kind at a time. That's how my mother did, the last thing she ever gave up was lobster.
Or just try going Veggie for a day here or there. You don't have to be completely one way if it seems unnatural to you. Just eat Vegetarian for one day, then how you are used to, then back.
Though to be honest I don't see going meatless as an ideal. Eating meat can be better for the environment if it's a sustainable for lack of better term, kosher, method to obtain it. Many animals thrive in places we couldn't get a decent crop of anything to grow. Many prey animals go out of control in situations and thus your consuming them is part of helping your local environment.
Some people also do better on a meat based diet due to how your body processes things. All of our bodies and activities are different, mine will not accept meat and much of the time will not tolerate dairy. That's fine.
Yours may require it and perhaps there's some trace nutrients or it could just be that your body demands meat. Changing a diet based on ideals rather then your diata- your way of life from which we get the term diet- is rather silly. That's like forcing someone into a religion because it's 'right'.
Go eat your steak or chicken and do so gratefully, or have a salad.
No diet police! :hahugh:

I love steak...a good grilled steak that is medium rare. Mmmm... Doesn't mean that I don't eat veggies or fruit, but I have to have my protein.

I'm mostly a veggitarian for the simple reason that most meats make me sick and quite frankly I'm very picky when it comes to eating meat(Okay I'm just picky in general)But again,Most meats make me sick and I don't like the texture of meat,I prefer a Crunchy veggie over a soft and chewy peice of meat,I find I have an easier time swallowing the veggie than the meat.*Shrugs* It's a wierd thing but I just go w/ it.

I hate appeals to nature. It's stupid to do that while sitting there typing at a computer instead of hunting your food with teeth and hands and living in a cave instead of an apartment.
We've come far enough thanks to agriculture to live well on a diet devoid of meat. Logic dictates that if we can minimize our negative impact on the planet and the creatures around us, we should.
Not to mention, a vegetarian diet is healthier than the average diet of today.

I eat white meat.
I was a vegetarian for a few years but in the end it didn't really agree with me. Even with supplements and things I lost weight (and I'm skinny as it is!), my doctor didn't like it, and the food was bland.
I'll always love my veggies, and I might go back to it one day when I have a stronger will, but for now I'll have my free range chicken and be thankful I have food at all.
