Avatars are little pictures that go under your name that represent you...or may even be a pic of you...

Anyway, I have them disabled...mainly for speed, but I dont think they will bog down the server that much..

So I will leave it up to all of you..

Do you want avatars? Yes or no..

I use Avatars on my BBS if anyone would like an Idea of what they look like. You can get there through this link (http://www.sacredchant.com/bbs). You can see them all on the registration page. If you wish to join our community as well. I'm running a different BBS software however the idea of avatars are the same throughout all of them. I like the idea of it. BB!

Avatars are little pics that show up in user info area. If you take a peak at my forum you'll see a picture like this:

under My Name and title. :) I have a few. I have to work on renaming them so they're more Alphabetical and more name friendly though. :)

Gee, I think they're kinda cute, let's keep em for now! You can always get rid of them if they become a problem, Hee, hee.

I think the names are good enough, not everyone has a T-1 connection :D

Actually on most of the other boards..like this one..that I seen that use the avatars I dont notice an increase in download time...and that is on my 56k.

And,really, who doesnt at least have a 56k modem now?

How could we go about choosing pictures for everyone
now that there are hundreds of us?

Merry meet all,

I'm voting 'yes' for avatars with one suggestion - that we restrict the pixel size and file size of the avatars. Nothing is more annoying than a server slowed down by a 500x500 image of someone's eyeball (and yes, I've seen that...)

Is this possible mol?

Blessed Be,

Wyrdsister

The modem really doesn't matter these days. Phone lines are the problem... I have many clients who have 56k modems, but cannot connect higher than 30k... The neighborhood I used to live in connected at a steady 26.4 regardless of your modem capacity. This is just speaking of the US...

I can imagine what it may be like in many rural areas of the UK and other countries. Many of our members do not live in the US.

Just a thought.

You choose. If we implement this feature then you would make the choice in your profile. you could pick from some that I have on our server here...or you could upload your own...

You are right..I wasnt thinking..but then again..i have that problem at work..usually I am stuck at 24 to 26k and I usually browse the vb forums and they avatars on...

Of course, if we do go ahead with the avatars and it slows down the forums...then they are gone.

I dont like it...it has added some extra sql queries and now that I think about it...it seems unecessary...like eaglewolf said.

So...if it something the Community REALLY wants then i will do it..but otherwise i think we should just leave it be.

Hmm...then you have the problem of someone putting a HUGE PICTURE of a Giraffe or something in their sig...I am really being cautious about all of this...because I dont want to slow things down. Right now i am using 28.8 to test and it runs...pretty good.

FCC regs have a lot to do with that, too. TOO, I live in an old building (well, old as me; 32 years), and I never connect faster than 28.8 ... We all suspect the phonelines in the walls are older than kraut. :(

I have mine uploaded already. 50x50. That's the size limit at the Midnight Garden (my board, poor thing).
