View Full Version : Making your own cards

~~For those of you who are not artistically challenged~~
Just an idea of how to make your own deck {It's how I'm doing mine}
Buy a couple decks of playing cards, cheap 99 cents ones, and use some nail polish remover to 'erase' the card's values. {the hearts etc numbers}
To make the surface even, paint on a thin layer of white paint. After that, you can go on with painting on your symbols and whatnot.
I'm using acrylic paints for now, maybe go into charcoal pencils for the minor part of the deck.
If you do decide to use chalk or pencils or 'dry' materials like that, lightly spray the cards with a fixative {ie hairspray} to cut down on the smudge factor.
If your cards 'curl' after the erasing, you can flatten them then, or after they're finished.
Laminate if you want, to give a lasting value to the cards.

You could always try this option too.....blank tarot cards:
$12.00 (this deck does have borders, numbers, suit, and I believe astrology associations on the deck with a blank middle)
http://www.insight-books.com/new/0880795247.html
or......
$8.00 (completely blank)
http://www.learntarot.org/bldesc.htm
I know it's a price to pay.....but I feel it's minimal.

I have been considering making a deck with pictures. A mountain deck, one of the desert, ocean. That sort of thing. We'll have to see how it goes,

That sounds like a beautiful idea RnR ~ are you planning on collaging the images/photos together? Have a look at the Sacred Circle deck they have some pretty cool backgrounds! (Im still :( waiting for mine!)

Yep its because they are waiting for a Rune book to come through mad: ....So fustrating!
Also Ive been thinking that you could buy a sheet of card and measure up and cut your own ~ that way you can have them any size you like :)

once I made a sort of quasi-Tarot deck. ..
You know those cards that hold stickers you can get in vending machines, in places like movie theaters or pizza parlours? Well, they're white on one side and cardboard-coloured on the other. I started doodling on one card and thought "hmm. . . I wonder if. . . " (this always leads to problems with me hehehe) and I collected up the cards I had (about 6) and I doodled. . . just random things like "old oak tree" and "stary night" and "a maze ing", "failed roll"(D&D reference. . .I drew a funny piccy of an anime character staring horrified at a D-20 that had landed on 1), and things like that. I then would shuffle them up and put them down in a row however I drew them. Once I got to "failed roll" I would stop drawing cards, and then look at the pictures and think of what they meant to me. . . is this kind of what tarot is like?
It was funny, sometimes I'd draw cards and inturpret them and then I would find similarities in my life. I would ask a question, for example "will I do well in Japanese this year?" and then see what I drew. . . ex: starry night, a maze ing, cats, failed roll. Starry night: traveling or mystery or a surprise. A Maze ing: a challenge of some sort. Cats: tricks or something unexpected or a need to be crafty or stealthy or sly. Failed roll: stop drawing/end of "reading."
So basically that would mean that I could do well in Japanese, but it would involve traveling, or meeting someone new, that it would be a challenge, that it would take some cunning, but that I could do it. If I draw "failed roll" first, I take it as a "no" ;)
-_-; of course, somehow I lost these fun little "toy tarot cards." Stuff just runs away from me sometimes.
Is this silly of me? is this similar to Tarot?
Well, that's my "homemade deck" 8O

I would definately say it's similiar. You were interpreting the pictures/theme of the cards. Definately divination! :D
Never thought about using those useful little cards!~and you get two everytime you throw in your .50 cents for a sticker! ~Bonus! :D

LOL after posting before, I managed to find four of my old "sticker cards" hehe. . . scanned them, so I'll put up the piccy.
The artwork isn't very good at all, just doodles mostly. I usually draw much better, these were just for "play" I guess hehe I was bored at the time I made them 8O
they are, clockwise (from)Cats, Tree, a-Maze-ing, Failed Roll
I wish I knew where starry night was. I liked that card. ^^; guess I"ll just draw it again.

I love it !!
What a great way to tickle the intuition.
It is said -and i paraphrase- that a truely divinatory soul can SEE in a scattering of leaves in the yard, or the toss of a handful of gravel.
Very nice idea, Puma.

I think those Moon cards are fun too ~ The High priestess reminds me of my cat Tilly! So cute :)

I have done just that!
much to my aching leg's complaint (I like to sit cross-legged on the floor in front of a candle when I try to sense things), I have done one-card readings for the purple group of reading victems! I'm going to post it now. . . I felt a lot of things, it was odd, ideas just came into my mind and felt right when I was thinking about the cards with the people (even though I don't really know them), so I'm going to say what I felt when I did the readings. Is this right? well, I'm off to find out! ^^; hehe

You can thank Okazaki-sensei for these. . . if it were not for her Japanese class, I wouldn't have bought the brush-pen, nor would I know the hiragana to write the words with. So I present to you:
Tears
and
Paradise.
(-_-; I feel stupid. . . I STILL can't completely read my own hiragana (don't know it all yet), so I forget how to say the words I wrote. Oh well, it's the same word as the english one, just in Japanese ^_^)
