man, that really burns me up! I have been Pagan for 10 years! and I go into a shop and ask for a moonstone and amber ring and the stupid woman behing the counter starts a 10 minute lecture about how I don't want that because the moonstone is for the womanly soft qualities like calm and peace and the amber is for the manly qualities like strength and determination!!!! and it would case unease!!!
What is this, the friggen dark ages!
What is this, Donna REED!!!!
how sadly sexist!!!
I don't need a lecture, I just need the damn ring!!! say that one represents balance, calm and the other determinition but don't attach a sex to it!!! It is my opinion it will help me realize balance! Stupid woman!
Ok... :) I feel better now...
Cheers

Aw... poor Xois. :( The woman probably thought she was just helping. So you didn't get the ring? :(

Thank you loopy for making me feel throughly ashamed of myself...I know she was only trying to be helpful...

I hate that!! I walk into a store and ask for a book on herbs, and a hematite stone, and the person behind the counter says, "Hematites a Stone," as if I were not quiet beyond dim. Goddess!! I know what I want, damn it, and you're going to sell it to me! And manly and womanly atritubutes to stones? I swear! As a pagan, you'd think we would see past steriotypes, then we go and say crap like that! Balance!!! Am I the only one in the world that understands it?!? Argh!!!
Sorry, just thought i'd join in. BTW, what'd you say back?

I think you're at least a little justified in your anger. When I walk into the mystic shops I frequent I am comfortable in that no one will give me suggestions unless I ask for them. It is not the shopkeepers business to pry in your needs unless you ask an opinion - especially when it's as sexist as that one!
Good luck in your search for that ring!

Loopy, I know it wasn't your intention, still I should learn to appreciate peoples intentions even if they piss me off!!! :D
What did i say back!!! I was in shock
She said, blah blah blah...and I said well, i'll get one made, and she sort of when humpf....like I was scorning her advice...
I just turned around and left...I dont even think she was finished talking yet...went to a different shop (YES, CHOICE IS A GOOD THING) but they too didn't have an amber and moonstone ring (I always go through this, last year it was a jasper and garnet ring, never did get that one...) but I bought a really pretty amber ring...start small and since I am a girl, I guess I don't need to accentuate my girl qualities of soft and nice! *shrug* ;)
But at the other store, I got some incense (I like the 1/2 sticks, which can be hard to find) some nice mini candle holders just very plain...

Have you tried going to a normal Jeweler and seeing if they can make/special order that ring/rings for you?
....just a thought.
I can't even go to my local MP store anymore....it closed last fall. :( I really liked the shop and the lady who ran it. No, I have to drive over 30 miles to get to one.....I haven't checked it out yet, but if that doesn't pan out, I'll have to drive 60 miles to see what I can't find! ....if I run across any rings like you described,....I'll let you know! ;)
Unfortunately some of the people who work in those stores have no clue what or why you need what you need....and personally, I think it's really non of their concern.....after all, a sale is a sale. ...no if I were trying to buy something harmful....then a kind warning may be warrented....like when buying herbs for tea....what you can and can't ingest......but a ring?? P-O-L-E-Z-E!!
That's my .02 pentacles.
