Hi all
I propose we snap a pic of our altar and post them (for those who don't find the idea intrusive) ... It will be fun
I'll borrow the digital camera tomorrow from work to do the pic :D
This could be fun...I have a shrine set up all the time
One side is of shells and blue and white candle called ocean
the other side has a bast statue, a strange cat statue I found at a flea market and and Owl, since Athena is on my mind as I work on my thesis. I put her in my shrine to honor her...and I burn her incense every evening :D
it is the top shelf of a 3 shelf bookcase. The bookcase has al my pagan / witch / wicca books in it...so its rather a self contained little unit. It is nestled between my 2 tall mundane bookcases that are in my computer room. This room has my computer the books and a cat tree and cat toys and a rocking chair...Really this is the main room of the apartment, so it should be a living room...
anyway...that was long...

Mleh...Mine isn't even recogniseable as one, it's also my painting desk. I have my cup and a letter-opener/athame, an angel statue/candleholder adorned with crow feathers, and a few candles, sitting beside my paint box, gesso, lamp, and turpenoid. ^_^;

The elemental holders were given to me for my birthday by a friend of mine - she made them herself; she's basically the Craft Goddess I'm telling you. Actually she makes Goddess and Faerie statues as well as magickal clothing (robes, cloaks, old style corsets, etc.)... :)

(Sorry I know this is getting OT but I hope I will be forgiven, others might be interested in this info so I post it publicly here instead of privately. Let me know if this is too far out of line, folks.)
Her name is Danielle and she is currently in the process of starting her own business here in the southwesterh Ontario area. Her business is Danielle Hodgins Creations, and you can find her website of magickal clothing at http://digitaldenial.com/dhodgins/ - I hope to get her to possibly put up some pics of her statues soon as well. She does take custom orders and you can feel free to inquire about her statues or her clothing, or if you have other things in mind let her know. She is very willing to work with you to create your vision :)

Finally got around to scanning my altar picture. I took it believing that at some point we would post our altar pictures. I was right!
This is a picture of my South facing altar. The guardian of the altar, aswell as the guardian of the room (his room) is Wharf (the dragon). Unfortunately I cut off the best parts of him with my camera...and he did not approve when he saw the picture....but that was the best I could do.
Anyhow....here's my modest little altar. Hope you likey.

That's really pretty. I don't have a digi cam---yet! My altar is in the corner of my bedroom. I made it out of a tree stump i found on the side of the road. I have a buddha statue that was given to me years ago by a family friend, several candle holders of various sizes, my athame, cauldron, a clamshell I found down by the riverfront, and a pretty dish with some marbles on it. :elf:

but, here is what it looks like! It is a little stool that is about 2 feet by 2 feet, and on it I have my altar cloth, which The God and Goddess are pictured on, so i don't have statues of them, a bowl of rose petels, an oak leaf, a blue stone from the beach, and a dragon statue. I have a chalice that is on there for the moon rituals, and a wand for my sabbats made of maple and a regular one the I made out of a Rhododendron(SP?) branch that was dead. I also have a black marble little cauldron like thing that i use as a liberation bowl.

I've not got a digi-camera or scanner so can't show mine.
It's on a coffee table in the living room: alter cloth, BIG Peace Lilly in the middle, stones and shells from the beach, crystals, a fossil, feathers from land and sea birds, silver chalice with water in, incense, candles, photo of my dad with his brothers and sister all now gone home, photo of my sons on a cliff overlooking the sea.
I've just bought a big picture of the moon over the ocean to put on the wall behind it.
As you can probably see, i do have an affinity with the sea! 8O

Most of mine isn't exactly essential to the altar - it's really just assorted stuff I've acquired over the years and thought "Oooh, nice". I like to have it there, though... it makes it feel more sort of... mine, if that makes sense.
I do also have a minimalist travelling altar, though, which lives in a small box and consists of four stones and two tea-lights. :)

Hi! I'm new to Wicca and all, and I want to make my self an altar, and I looked at some of your guys's pictures of altars, and I'm still not sure wut kinds of thing i should put on it, or wut not to put on it and what not. So I hoping for some help on what to put on it. I was also wondering, do u have to have a wand or athames or those kinds of things on it? Thanks!
Shy Hawk
August 22nd, 2002, 09:34 AM
Naw, you don't really have to have anything in particular on it. Mine at the moment is not the same as in the picture. [Though I do have more than one, and on one altar I do have a daggar (athame). But, I don't even own a wand...just not my thing.] At the moment, my personal altar that I use for prayer, has on it, some candles in random places with different representations, incense to use as an offering, my dragon, pictures of my family, a metal bowl (for offerings or for use as like a cauldren), a diety statue, a lava lamp (I'm not sure why....I just like it), a statue of a turtle and rabbits playing together, and a purple altar cloth (just to keep the dust down a bit). Much of my other stuff is in a chest. It's really much smaller than it sounds. And, it faces North just because I feel like having it face North. It can be anything you are comfortable with.
Sometimes I dress it up with items from the season...just depends on your taste.

Right now, I have a yellow altar cloth with a whole ton of candles and some incense. I also have my wand on there, my tarot cards, runes, and pendulum, a lava stone, seashells, feathers and a maple leaf. (The latter 4 as representation of the elements)

I had a book by Denise Linn called Altars with some terriffic pictures of Altars that people have in their homes. Most were Non- Wiccan. An Altar is not just a place to perform magick, it is also a place where you can meditate, or a "shrine" of sorts for you to place things which have deep spiritual significance to you. Denise Linn reccomends having altars in every room of your home. For instance, in a childs bedroom, you could have an altar of all pictures of the child, along with the childs bracelet from the hospital, baby booties, etc. In a Kitchen, you could have one of various cooking herbs, ingredients and tools. Denise Linn even has one in her "Studio", which she calls her "Creative Altar". On it, she has paint brushes, paints, scissors, pencils, pens, paper, etc. Every time she goes to do something creative, she lights a candle on that altar, and to her it helps her get the creative juices flowing.

That's a neato idea...I like the idea of having altars all around the house. Actually, we sort of do anyhow. I think having significant spiritual or personal items around all the time cause one to reflect a bit more. Or be more consious...perhaps.

....hhhmmmmm I'll have to ask my dad if he can get the digital camera from work.
My alter is up permanently, in fact when we bought our house, we decided that one room of the house would be a permanent sort of sacred space area. So we have what our family call a "meditation room" done in all sorts of paganish moon/star/dreamcatcher/wolfspirit tr\ype ideas.
It's really nice, it's not finished yet, as things cost money but for what we have, it's really stunning!!!!

Here's my altar (don't mind the reflection in the mirror...my room was a mess).
This is my Summer altar, I'll be changing it soon for fall. I found a lot of my stuff at the dollar store (aren't they great) because the magick stores are few and far between here and I can't afford anything really expensive. The candle holders in the middle are supposed to represent the 5 elements. The book is my book of shadows. I have pictures of everyone and everything that is important to me around my altar from pics of my cats to my best friend and her kids to my family. I have to find somewhere else to put my altar because I have too much stuff.
So let me know what you think :D

Glad you like the sword I made it myself with a little help from my step dad. I'm very proud of it, as it is the first thing of it's kind I have ever attempted. I'm currently working on a knife. I also hand made the wand right down to sellecting the brantch I wanted and growing it round a peace of wood to make it curly. The green man on the bedroom altar is hand made from salt dough. All altar cloths are hand worked to. I'm getting quite creative these days :o).

I'm bumping up this thread to share some blurry photos of my humble altar. ;) I've just finished preparing it for a small Imbolc ceremony tonight. :)
In picture one...
You see in the lower left hand corner, some spring rocks and bark I collected. Above it is a white blur, which is actually three matza crackers I am using for a "bread" of Imbolc. Next to those is my chalice, filled with milk for Imbolc. To the right of the chalice is a red apple to symbolize the fruits of the coming growing season. Next to the apple is a yellow candle and a blue candle. Then comes my vanilla candle.... Then an orange candle and a white candle. In front of all the candles is my book of shadows, open to the ceremony and infront of the book is my wand. ^.^ (You would see red, pink, and white ribbons between the stone and "bread", but I hadn't cut them when I took the picture! ;))
In picture two...
You see a blurry green glass object with incense sticking out of it on the right! It's actually a candle holder in the shape of a cat. ;) Behind the incense is a small metal container I use for spells/rituals calling for burning of some sort. (You can't see this particular object...) In front of it is a disc made of wax! That's right! I mixed some clove, sage, and green wax together to form a "holding disc". It's engraved with a star of david inside a circle. :) On the disc is some basil. And of course, you see the wand, book, and candles again. ;)
I hope you enjoyed my blurry pictures as much as I enjoy my ritual!!!

I probably should explain what I have there. The glass on the pedestal thing is what I use for a chalice. There are two quartz crystals next to it as well as purple, red and white spell pouches to the left of it. Three small candles are behind it with a black velvet spell pouch and 3 viles in front of them. A tall purple and a tall red candle are in the background. Next to them is a metal container I use to burn things in. It is currently holding some glass rocks that I have. In front of that is my bag of runes and my tarot cards. In the center is the white candle with 3 strings of rose quartz crystals around the base. It also has a black string with a goddess charm on it around it and 13 of the glass stones. A vine is in the background and it's all on a black cloth.

i finally set up my official altar! my dad gave me this antique indian altar for my birthday 2 years ago, so finally removed all the clutter i kept on top of it, and made it into a real altar.
i have a goddess candle, a tiara (just because its pretty), a seashell with water, a seashell with salt, dried rose petals, an incense holder, a candle, and to the side of my altar, i have an angel statue (which ive always had facing outside of my window since i was little, because i thought it would protect me). i also have a teeny pewter unicorn and a mini buddha statue.

:D I just took these pictures today. I guess I should explain what's on the altar eh? Ok, in the center is my book of shadows, (you probably guessed that though, lol) behind that is my wax melting pot which is ontop of a wooden box top with a celtic knot design on it. To the right and left of that are two white God and Goddess candles (Respectivly) To the right of the God candle is a small potted plant, though it looks like a dark blob in the picture, and to the left of the Goddess candle is a stone carving. On the right side is a large red candle, a silver incence catcher, my athame in it's stand, and you can also see my sister's hand. :) On the left side is my clear glass chalice, a dish of salt (formed into a pentagram) and my little cauldron with a wreath of ivy around it.
The altar it's self is made from an old wooden trunk that I painted silver. You can't see it very well in the picture but there are spirals and swirls allong the edges, and a sun burst in the center.
http://freakzngoths.homestead.com/files/Altar002.jpg
same thing, different veiw:
http://freakzngoths.homestead.com/files/Altar003.jpg
Here is a part of a bookcase next to my altar. The top shelf holds my herb and oil cabnet, below that is my tarot shrine, with a basket of rosepetals in the back, a small painting I did rests ontop of that. My deck is to the right in a black velvet bag, and though you can't see it well, I have a ceramic triquerta on top of that. There is also a small red candle there. In the center is an ankh incence tile I made. To the right is my father's book on the tarot, and an orange candle for inspiration.
http://freakzngoths.homestead.com/files/smellystuff.jpg
And last, but not least, is a picture of a small altar next to my bed. It's just got candles on it, and if someone asks me to light a candle for them, that's where it is.

I feel inspired to take a pic of mine and post it, perhaps in a day or so.

yeah so I haven't been around much, but I had to show this all off...
Se here's my contribution to the alter picture pile. Its FINALLY done! Yay!
http://www.residue-remains.net/visiproof/Angela/Randomness/alter%20type%20thing.jpg
Well technically its not done. Its curruntly made up of 2 end table type things sitting next to each other. I need to build something a -tad- bit bigger. But I am pretty happy with what I have here.
I have 2 cloths on the tables. One is a really cool marronyred color. That's what's showing through the middle there. The other one is black (duh?) with a really cool beading job around the edges. I got that one at an SCA event. Huzzah!
Contents:
1 candle holder.
Its pretty neat. Its a black metal type thing with a curve to it.
5 Candels (lavender, green, blue, red, white)
I'm not happy with the colors, but this is the best I could find with my very limited income. All the colors represent the elemental thingies... the lavender is for the mind/self/whatever. I don't know how to explain that one.
1 incense burner
What room is complete without one? I also have a large supply of various inceses. Currnt one is nag champa. Quite possibly my fav.
1 mini Zen garden set
You need one of these. Go get one. Right now. It comes with a nifty 'Zen Melody Meditation' cd. Its ocean sounds mixed with music. Usually ocean music annoys me, but this ones pretty good.
10 assorted stones
Malachite, tiger eye (red and brown), crystal, amathyst and some other stuff. What the !@#& is that green stuff? The name is on the tip of me toung.
1 'crystal' ball (hardee har har)
Its not a crystal, bit it is a ball. its that lavender colored globe thing. I think it was meant to be a paper weight cause its quite heavy. Its got a buncha air bubbles inside. Its pretty nifty.
1 set of runes.
I love my runes. They're pretty. And I love the box they're in. Shiiiney...
1 Raider-White Tarot deck (however that's spelled)
I love my Torot deck too. This deck has pretty stars on a dark blue background for it's back. The back that I keep them in has a similar pattern. Yayness!
1 weird candle thing
You know those nifty glassy craft type rock things? That's what those blueish green things are in that weird glass jar dealy. And of course... a white votive candle.

Here's mine. Small, functional, simple and above all, portable :) The altar cloth changes seasonally. Here we see Litha mode  (Without the flowers in the basket and water in the copper cup - candles unlit). Lammas will see the altar with brown cloth and wheat ears in the basket. Cider in the chalice and a small piece of seed bread as offerings in the wooden bowl :)

Here's my altar. I need a new altar cloth, which I'll be making, but I don't know what I want yet. The small candle on the left is a St. Brighid's candle - an Irish friend of mine brought hers to my place one day, and passed the flame on to me. The cauldron was a gift from my non-Pagan husband, and I beaded my chalice myself. My athame was originally a hunting knife, which I handed off to a friend of a friend to make it into something more appropriate for me, but he never did finish it :( It is only about 1/2 done. I've posted a closeup of the athame. My husband keeps telling me he'll try to finish it for me, since I have no talent with tools, but he's so busy working on the house that he hasn't had time. The handle is purpleheart. I also am making a wall hanging to hang above my altar, which is on top of my dresser to keep it out of reach of my 14 month old daughter :)

I love everyones altars! Beautiful! My altar is a little messy right now and my digital camera doesn't seem to want to work or else I'd post a pic of mine. I'll work on it and get something up maybe in the next week. :) It's basically just a bunch of big candles and statues on top of a large wooden trunk, since I live with my non-pagan Grandparents. My athame, etc are put inside of the trunk wrapped in silks.

August 9th, 2003, 10:22 AM
BlueFlame, the handle of my Athame is rough and unfinished, and the pins haven't been put in yet. It also needs to be polished. Not much left to do to finish it, but unfinished all the same.
Here's some information about St. Brighid's candles...
The Celtic Goddess Brigit maintained a Shrine at Kildare, where nineteen virgin priestesses tended a perpetual Flame. As Roman Catholic belief systems grew stronger in Ireland, the Abbey and Shrine eventually became a convent. The priestesses, who were called the
Daughters of The Flame, became nuns and kept the perpetual Flame burning. Into the eighteenth century songs were still being sung in honor of
Brigit, Guardian of the Healing Waters and Keeper of the Flame. For more than a thousand years the Flame was tended by nuns. Before that, for an unrecorded expansion of time the Flame was tended by priestesses. By 1220 AD, male
authorities in the church were increasingly angered by the no-male rule at the Abbey, which they thought defied the church's teaching, that nuns were subordinate to priests. To admonish the Daughters of The Flame into subordinance and obedience, the church decreed that the perpetual Flame was merely a pagan ritual, and that it be extinguished. Because the spirit of Brigit continued for centuries to impact life and living, the Vatican modernization program declared in the 1960's, that there was insufficient proof of Brigit's sanctity. St. Brigit was decanonized. The festival in honor of Brigit is held on February 1st and 2nd (the ancient Celtic Fire Festival of Imbolc), when the Sun renews its energy to the Earth. My candle was lit from a candle that had been lighted from Brigit's
Flame at Kildare, Ireland, and even though the Flame was extinguished in order to mail the candle, the essence of Brigit's Flame at Kildare remains in the wick. From THIS candle, every candlewick and every oil lamp wick that we light
becomes Brigit's Flame.
If you, or anyone else, would like a St. Brighid's candle, just send me a PM, and I can light a candle from mine and send it to you :)

The only pic of an altar of mine that I have on my 'puter is my Samhain altar from the year 2000. The picture was actually featured on Witchvox's homepage on October 23, 2000.
I'll get pics of ALL my altars/shrines (4 in total for now) ASAP and post them.
Pic:
In the back are the God/dess candles and holders, plus a silver triple candleabra, as well as a bottle of red wine. Then it's the brass dish holding salt, silver chalice holding wine, brass cauldron for the working, plastic realistic looking skull, silver dish holding water, and two candle holders with tea lights. Then two ears of Indian corn. In front is my wand, a silver bell, two tiny jack-o-lanterns, an offering bowl, and on the far right (you can't see it) is my athame.

Everyone has such beautiful altars, and most wonderful of all they are all different and show the character and personality of the people to whom they belong. Hopefully mine show the same, both permanent altars in the centre of the room next to the bed, just in two different homes.
This is how my altar was before I moved, this was taken at Lughnasadh:

sjackkill, I think you need your Players' Handbook for that. Check out the third edition, it's nice. :D
But I'm happy this thread was brought up. I love seeing other people's altars.
Here's mine, before i got my new Goddess statue:
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid39/p4ebe461ccc9c37b5a2a24f813695c237/fd0c13ef.jpg
I guess it would be good to describe what all's on there, as the pic isn't so clear...
In the back is a small dais-type platform I put together of wooden blocks I've had since I was little. On top of that is my Goddess plaque and a "silver" Stag for the God. To the left of the plaque is a small pic of Kali I got out of an old National Geographic, and thee ears of Ryegrass I tied with three small ribbons. In front of Kali is a rounded rock I picked up at the beach that has a hole in it. :) In front of the plaque is a scallop shell I picked up at the beach, with a beach-rounded quartz in it. To the right of that is a beach-smoothed shard of brick, and next to that is a dried white rosebud. To the right of the Stag's leg is another beach stone- a large one that looks vaguely lingam-shaped.
Leaning to the right of the pic is a twist of bittersweet that my aunt gave me- I haven't decided if it'll be a wand or not, but I'm thinking not. to the right of that is my wooden incense burner with a bell missing its clapper sitting on te end. The bell I use to snuff candles. In front of the twist is a small sack with two quartz points in it, that will go into a wand I'll make someday. In front of that is a small pair of seewing scissors I've been using to snip herbs with.
On the far left is my chalice that I picked up in Disneyworld (no lie), and in front of that is my bell.
Flanking the dais are my candleholders, a stag with his head raised and a doe with her head lowered, as if grazing. In front of him is a wooden cup for salt, in front of her is a glass bowl for water. Between them is my pent- made of a round mirror and blue nail polish. I have a moonstone necklace surrounding the pent, and acorns on either side of that.
To the left is a small white packet of seeds my same aunt gave me and I haven't planted yet, and to the right is my "Witness", a device I was compelled to make under the tutelage of my last teacher. And there's a teeny fall leaf there too, if you look close. I picked it up because it was the only one on the ground while the grass was still green.
And in the front is my athame, and since it has no sheath, it sits on a piece of brown felt.
I think the only change to this right now is that I have a bigger Goddess statue,a nd there are several cotton balls sitting on the pent, all from giving blood. May use those for healing stuff later on.
A couple pics of another altar in the bedroom.. It's partway between being an Inner Child altar and a meditation space... With and without the camera flash:

Here's a picture of my altar. I'm sorry for the blurriness. My digital camera isn't the best and it's quite a pain.
Anyway, In the back there's my two white candles, and on the left I have my blue chalice which was given to me by a friend, some salt, some quartz crystals, and a bell. Plus a seashell to represent the goddess.
On the right I have a pinecone for the god, a feather, a incense holder, and a candle.
I forgot to mention the pumpkin and candle in the back, which are decorations for Samhain. I also have an angel statue and offering bowl in the back.
My altar is kinda plain, but it suits me.

She is "The Source". A general kind of Goddess figure that I guess you could put any name to.
Unless you mean the little witch with the stars flying over her head, and I haven't given her a name yet. :D She came from the Christmas Tree Shop a few years ago...
LadyWillow
October 10th, 2003, 02:33 AM

Anyone have some suggestions for my altar (pic above) to make it more witchy, without being too witchy?
Sylvan
October 10th, 2003, 02:42 AM
Hrrmm... an altar cloth that has stars and moons on it might help witchify it... But it's up to you and what you have and what you can get, really... On the wall I have a small grapevine wreath with a ribbon tied through it to make a pent. Very easy to do, and pretty...

Wow, I just read the whole thread and I am so jealous. You all have such beautiful altars. I can't have one here, I live in a dorm and we aren't allowed to have candles (they have fake fire drills and go through our rooms looking for stuff to cite us for) so mine are hidden right now. I may set one up for tomorrow night, it will be my first, so I'll try to post it up if I do.

Here's a picture I snaped today of my Yule altar, pre-ritual:
http://freakzngoths.homestead.com/files/YuleAltar2003.jpg
The altar cloth is new, it's deep green velvet, that I unfortunatly got some wax on today. :( It had to happen sometime I suppose.
Then I've got your basics, God and Goddess candles, fire candle (right), incense and catcher, athame, chalice with water, cauldron, salt dish. The green plate in the center holds my "cakes and ale" Which is a leftover Popeyes biscut (you laugh, but they are really good) and a mug of cinnamon tea. The green plate also holds some small pinecones and acorns, and the round sun box holds frankensense resin as a small offering. The big red candle twords the back is to represent the returning sun, and the silver star candles are just to look pretty, ;)
I later photoshoped in the holly and "Yule 2003"

I'm new and I don't have an altar yet, but thank you so much for sharing all of yours with me. I loved looking at them. I also love seeing how everyone's is unique and personal, and a representation of the person who owns them. What a cool way to express yourself!
I'm not sure whose altar it was, but there was one that looked like it was on a windowsill - lots of plants and statues of bunnies and other wildlife. I really liked that one...seemed very peaceful to me. Made me look away from the computer and at the shelf over the sink in the kitchen and say, "hmmm...." :hehehehe:

Okie Dokie -
Imbolc's a~coming, so I set up my Sabbat altar!!
Its very modest since I live with my family who arent aware of my religious beliefs...
As you may see, my altar is standing right under this HUGE mirror in my room that has pictures of my friends & drawings & Madonna (im the BIGGEST Madonna fan), and also around the mirror are a bunch of angels dolls & a big ceramic moon~lady i got in Venice... so that entire area/wall in my room sorta makes up my altar...

Thought I'd update:
First three are the Yule Altar from the Meet and Greet Yule Ritual...the next is the M&G's Mabon Altar, and the last is the "altar" from Samhain--which was a large plastic cauldron surrounded with items we used. That ritual we had smaller plastic cauldrons at each element containing salt, water, incense and a candle.

Well, here's mine. not dressed out for a ritual or anything, this is more an everyday, "Felidae is about to leave for work", sort of look.
Thanks to Greenman and Kurgarra for helping me track down the prints I nicked for the images! :)
And I am proud of the off-the-cuff mosaic I did with the tiles, but that saga is in another thread!

I finally moved it from my dresser (where I would keep putting random things on it...), and set it up again. Like a lot of us here I livewith a family who isn't aware/too keen on my religious beliefs, and as brilliant as I am figured out a way to have a permanent altar without anyone knowing. I've got a piece of furniture that's a full length mirror on one side, and spins around to a set of 6+ removavble shelves. It's small, but workable. ^^
Anyway so here is the pic. The sun looking thing in the front is my insence burner - it's a clay sun that hols four sticks and one cone. The red bag is my prayer beads, and the wood pedastal is where my beautiful goddess that Freyja is making will be. *squee* ^___^ *edited to add: Yes, those are napkins.

Thank you. ^_^ I actually have, from the years I worked at a home store, a set of two napkins for each season.

I love how most of you just pack your altar full of anything and everything that speaks to you. I myself have rarely done that with altar set-ups since I need room for work, such as sewing up sachets, grinding and mixing herbs, concocting potions, creating necklaces or charms, etc. I need my space, basically!

I'm debating posting a pic...my "alter" is well, kinda scattered around...I don't have most of my stuff out in one area, except for a staff, a cauldron full of runes (great way to start and end the day!) small treasure chests for just locking away bad days, and my prized aloe plant. I was however going to redo the gardens at my boyfriends house this year to add a 4th garden behind the garage where no one can see...would be my special herb garden w/ a small bench for focusing on goals and hopefully new beginnings.
I guess I can take some pics...I'll post in a bit..

my altar (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v303/MissSpelled/altered4.jpg)
I haven't done too much spellwork, lately, and I have a separate altar for rituals, but I love this one. I didn't realize how much I needed to touch up the head until I looked at the pic though. Eek.
Anyway, the head is my anthropomorphizing of the ocean. i have land, sea and sky represented, my coral wand and my box filled with coins, pretties, and hemp cords for knot spells. The book is my bos and the altar cloth was an old mumu type thing I got from a tourist trap years ago.
I'm amazed I didn't even have to pry the cat off to get a picture for once. Heh.

I think I figured out how to do it...
It's kind of hard to see on the right side. In between the red (fire) and white candle (air) there is an owl and a dragon. Behind them is one of those aromatherapy burner things that I use instead of normal incense. The stone there is actually a fossil that I found in my grandma's back yard. Next to the fossil on the left are two feathers. The plant in the middle is a poinsetta and the circular piece of paper is a pentacle. Everything else should be all set. Oh yes, there's also a mobile overhead that has the moon, stars, and Jupiter but you can't see it...I'll take a picture later. And on the wall there is a moon and sun medallion thingie. Oh and sorry the pics are blurry...I only have a digital camera on my phone so you're not going to get the best quality.

If you are having trouble finding things to build your altar such as an altar cloth, there is no rule saying that you have to purchase one. There is a great benefit that comes from making your own. You get to decide what it will look like and you get to add a little of your own personal energy into the mix. An altar can be a permanent fixture in your home, or a temporary one. It is up to you. You could do something as simple as turning a cardboard box upside down, covering it with your altar cloth and using it for a base. The beauty of this is that you can use the box to store things in when you are not using them if you are pressed for space. It is really up to you. As far as items to go on your altar it is really up to you as well. I went with my intuition on the matter. I found most of the things for my altar in a second hand store. There is nothing saying it has to be expensive, or brand new. Try looking around outside and see what nature provides you. :colorful:

hm... just try reserving an area as an altar, and put whatever you find important on it. there are a lot of good books out there that contain information on tools. your altar is a place to put what you find important.

Thanks. I'm amazed at how friendly you guys all are. I haven't seen a single fight since I've been on (admittedly not long, but ALL my horse forums are chalk full of PMSing people).
I'm really liking the thrift store/second hand chopping up skirts thing. I guess I'm kinda anti-commericialism, so stuff like that really appeals to me. I think I'm just gonna go with the flow.
Here are my current ideas:
I think I'm going to put it on top of my book shelf (it is short, so no stretching, but I would have to stand. Might get uncomfortable... hm.) because, while my parents are cool with my self-discovery and all that junk, a blaring neon sign of altar-dom would go over badly with pretty much everyone I know and I really like to read. Even the former, rather more hypocritical me would have raised an eyebrow (if I could, but I can't. How irritating). Sorry about that, moving on. I have this yellow candle that I really like. It has a sun-ish holder and my mom got it for me. It just works for me. I think I'll put that in the center at the back. The other thing I must have there is my little lucky horse statue I got at the Cave Dwellings in Colorado Springs (I dropped him once at an FFA thing and his leg broke... is that possible? a 3-legged LUCKY horse? Oh, well). The closest thing I have to a sharp pointy object is my pocket knife, which will do in a pinch. Besides, my mom's boyfriend gave it to me (despite the fact that it was purchased at the Tobacco Congress and I do not approve of smoking, I like it a lot). Then I need my little plant named Spike. I got him at an FFA meeting, where they made us all cut the little sprouts or whatever off this big plant and re-pot them. I think I will put my journal there, too. I usually jam it on my bedside table but I feel it would be offering a tangible part of my soul to the gods and whatnot. I mean, in theory, they know what you are thinking and stuff but symbolism is huge in religion.
I would steal my little sister's incense thingy but somehow plopping bad Karma in the middle of an altar seems like a really bad idea to me. I think I will also put my little stick thingy I found at the cemetary and for some reason carried home and the maple seed that flew out of a tree and landed straight up in the ground and gave me this really weird feeling that it was a sign.
What do you think? Am l unconsciously commiting some Sin Of Altar-Making? I'm going to look around my dad's town next time I'm over there. It is one of those yuppy, trendy places with tons of nick-nack stores, perhaps with statues that cost less than the small fortune some dot commers want.
Sorry that was so long, I'm just new and enthusiastic.

yeah, sounds fantastic. i've got a small foal figurine that has only three and a half legs cos one broke off. in my innocent youth, i stuck some blu-tack in a texta lid and stuck in on the end of the broken leg. he looks like he's got a permanent cast on. and it's just the right size so he still stands. Talk about ingenuity.

This was my Litha altar. Nothing particularly summery about it, but it was kinda last minute, I had two sets of grandparents in town for my graduation so not much time for preparation.
So the picture in the back is by Selena French (http://www.selinafenech.com/), titled "Wicca". It's really beautiful.
Then we have the white pillars for the God and Goddess, with two ceramic triquertas I made a long time ago.
My new purple chalice ($1.00!)
Cauldron
Salt dish
Copper Wand
Red Fire candle
Incense catcher
and in the back, behind the BoS is a wax melter/hotpot thingie.
Yeah, I think thats everything. :)

This was my Litha altar. Nothing particularly summery about it, but it was kinda last minute, I had two sets of grandparents in town for my graduation so not much time for preparation.

Thanks!
I think it's called an aromatherapy diffuser. You light the tea candle and drop some droplets of an essential oil into the dish thing on top and it makes the room smell nice. I use it instead of incense as my parents won't let me burn incense (they think I'm smoking pot sadly.)

This isn't my altar, but it's a shelf that I'm not worried about displaying in the open in my home. It's in the study/library, so it's no biggie :D You can see I love crystals.
