i am a christian and i have a celtic background and others and i think you should have the child be exposed to things and when the child is grown up then she can make a choice( and do not sway her to chose for either side be nutral).

i was brought up a baptist, by a fanatic, my mother and was dragged to "daily vacation bible school" every summer as well as every billy graham revival meeting she could get to. i considered the "dvbs" a dammed imposition even then, a theft of my school vacation summer and boring to boot. as for the revival meetings picture a 12 year old lump of stubbornness stoutly resisting the almost tangible psychic pressure to get up, march up front and be "saved". i'd say that a 5 year old would most likely let most of the indoctrination slide right over his head but it might serve as an "inoculation" for later, when he might be more susceptible, against my mother's brand of fanaticism.

( i don't these days judge most christians by her by the way )

I have a dilemma. All the children at my daughters daycare are going to a bible class for one week in the end of July. My daycare provider only had one day to sign up the kids and she included my daughter. She knows I am a pagan and do not buy into the Catholic religion so she asked me if it would be ok for my daughter (who is 5) to attend or she will keep her home with her. Now of course since all of her friends are going my daughter would like to go too. I think on one hand it may be good for her to go and learn of other religions so she can make an informed choice. And at her age I'm not sure it makes much of a difference at all. But on the other hand I know the pastor who heads this up is famous in town for being a religious fanatic. I'm really not comfortable with him pushing his beliefs on my child. Also if my daughter were to mention that she is being raised as a witch what might that cause?

Have any of you sent your children to religious instruction? And would you?

At that age...it seems like it is going to be more about having fun than actually Learning about religion...

I went to bible school for two weeks every summer as long as I was able (ie. until I was too old to go anymore) and LOVED it. Could I tell you what stories I learned? Nope. But I could tell you what crafts we made and what friends I met... Bible school can be lots of fun, just be open to questions if your child has any! :)

Me too! There's a church right down the road from my parent's home, and we went every summer we could. :D I think it was the start of my spiritual path. You might explain to your kids that it's not the path you walk, but you are considering letting them go, to learn about another religion.

I am letting my son choose his own path, what's right for him. I let him go to a Christian Summer camp that lasted 4 days, 3 nights. He had a ton of fun, I answered all his questions (he's 9) and he seems satisfied with the answers....so, no harm done.

He still asks all sorts of questions about the path I choose to walk, so I think he's still very much interested in it. :D

I'm glad to hear these good stories. And Mol I think you are right about them being there to have fun. I guess I'm just a little paranoid about these things. I never really had any experiences with the church, only the people who attend who've told me I'll go to hell for not following their path.

I'm relaxing a little more now....I love you guys....
