I suppose it would make sense for me to introduce myself. obviously that would make the most sense. but since I am in search of answers and this is the beginning of my search, I will keep things brief.

I am trying to find a basic link between all things. for instance. Respect plays into all religeons. respect for elders, peers, the dead. Honesty is another facet which is seen on all gems of religeous practice. right now I am concentrating on "protection" and the correspondance there of. My areas of study are any and all sects, religeons, philosophy's in which protection/ or a protector come into play I am interested in the lore, history of "greenman". thusly I have heard he is a masculine forest entity. possibly a protector. any other information would be appreciated.

Here's a little tidbit on the Greenman...

Agriculture developed 11,000 years ago in the Mid-East. Around 3000 B.C. it reached Egypt, & development within the Greek cultures was not far off. The assoc. of God and plant life as abundant, developed throughout Europe. Dionysus has aged to a bearded with a crown of ivy/a feminine youth wearing skins crowned with laurel & ivy. Another aspect would be skin of a panther &/or a black robe. In later times, he is portrayed with long curly hair, crowned with vines & grapes, holding a wand (thyrsus - fennel stalk capped w/ pinecone) which is the forest nature and the agricultural nature also holding chalice (womb of great mother). He is now the Divine child, and the child of promise. It is offering of his Divine nature, his liquid essence (semen). This is the first time that he is depicted of Wiccan ritual tools together with their symbols - about 30 B.C.

Wand representing phallus, chalice representing womb.

The child aspect, the son (lover to be) of the Goddess, the product of magick. He then becomes the Lord of Harvest and then the Green Man. Born around 5th century B.C.

The intro. to hallucinogenic plants in European Witch cults, w/ a combination of grapes & grains, and beer & wine. They reflect the transforming nature of the God Spirit or God Nature of the plant. In ritual, to consume these things were to take on his spirit or to become one with him. In Greece his name was Linos, in Lithuania, Vaizgantas; in Scotland, the Barleycorn.

The Orphic tradition, Dionysus included resurrection & recomposition of the bones after death, combining him with Hades, where he becomes God of the Underworld, or the Lord of Shadows, giving him assoc. with the Labaryth of the Minetar & Dionysus & Ariadne (Homer - the Odyssey, the Iliad).
