Artefact recalls witches' shadow
By Greig Watson
BBC News Online, Nottingham

The bottle contained pins, hair and a leather strap
A chilling reminder of our superstitious past has been unearthed from a rural farmhouse.
The "witch bottle" was discovered buried in old foundations in the Lincolnshire village of Navenby.

Containing bent pins, human hair and perhaps urine, the bottles were supposed to protect a household against evil spells.

Dated to about 1830, it is evidence the fear of dark forces persisted far longer than previously thought.

Very interesting!

You know, I have a 'witch's bottle' buried by my back door that I made myself. It's to keep the house safe from bad juju and from people bringing in their nasty energies. Hmmm... a witch with a witch's bottle - now that's irony.

Fae - I've heard that you always put urine into a witch's bottle. Just goes to show there are no hard and fast rules!

I think we should all make and bury one!

There are a few threads in Arts and Crafts and Magic and Rituals about how to make them. They are also called Witch Balls. Scott Cunningham also has instructions in a few of his books. I bought some empty Yule ornaments some time ago with the intent of making one and never got around to it.

I've made a few witch balls to hang around the house...and I've also heard that witch bottles should always have urine in them (and preferably menstrual blood as well.)

Considering that there was urine in these bottles I can think of one thing it was sure to protect against. Wild animals coming into your house. A marking of territory if you will. Most animals will not come close to something if they smell human urine.
