View Full Version : Invocation of the Mists
WildSpirit

Well, considering it's the time of year here when the mists tend to roll in during the early morn, I felt like I should sit down and create an Invocation of the Mists. However, I'm having a bit of trouble. Being of Irish tradition, corelation seems hard. I mean, if I followed Briton trads, this would be simple (corelate with the Mists of Avalon). So...could any Druids of Irish trads here help me with this problem? I hope I'm not being too vague...

Is something wrong? This page has had 4 views and no replies...have I done something to upset anybody here? If so, I'm terribly sorry..it just seemed like a good idea.

I would check the mythology concerning the comming of the Tuatha de Danann. It seems to me they used mist/fog to hide their landing, of course I can't find the book! But I remember reading it in Squires Celtic Mythology Book. A bit dry, and I disagree with his good/evil world view but a great refrence book for Mythology.
Sorry I cant remember who did the mist.
Hope this at least gives you a lead.

There's no problem. Look at the other threads - every thread has many more views than replies, it's nothing personal.

Well, with all the rain and humidity we've had, calling the mists shouldn't be very hard!! LOL.

LOL! I used to do that as a child, too, Mari....my Nana (my own greatgrandmother) used to say that I would become a rain-maker for a local tribe (I'm Metis) or a witch!! LOL!! Talk about hitting the proverbial nail on the head!!!

Greetings Twig:
Thank you for the warm welcome. I've been studying working with the elements for a couple of years, not my strong suit, but I find the study interesting, and more than once quite rewarding.
The morning after 'd posted, I went outside to enjoy the sunrise,
It was wonderfully foggy outside, rare for this time of year in South Carolina, I felt as if I was seeing it for the first time.
:o BTW it was the gown I was wearing that night that caused
the stumble, probably should hem that thing .

You wanna talk about wonderfully foggy...that's all we've had here all day! No sun for miles around...

Hello WildSpirit:
I just noticed we're neighbors( well sort of ), I suppose if it was foggy often it might lose some of it's wonder... then again maybe not. I usually miss my favorite part of the day (dawn) due to
an early job, so I'm content with whatever is out there when
opportunity knocks.

I was just wondering if parts of the Mists of Avalon were based off real Druidic tradition or pagan or whatever. Like I remember them saying something about how they believed the mists were like an in-between time when this world and the spiritual world were close together. Did they really believe that or was it just made up?

Hello Satika!
What kind of work have you been doing with the elements? I've been trying to get myself started on learning more about and working with the elements, so I'm curious. I have quite a collection of reference books, so I've been reading up on what they have to say about the elements - what they have rulership over, how to work with them, etc.
I usually greet the sun while driving to work - miss the days when I could walk outside and really appreciate the sunrise.

Merry Meet:
Most of what little talent I have for this area of magick comes
from games we were taught as children by my grandmother.
That's why it's probably not my strong suit. That memory lapse
again.
I have some success calling the winds, occasionally rain. I'm still trying to study and learn how to have a better success rate. Envoking the mists appealed to me, I'd hoped to have someone share with me how to do that.
I've studied the work of Scott Cunningham's, Earth, Air, Fire and
Water. Somehow the hows escape me. Something blocking me,
probably my vow to "Harm None", I'm concerned if I do this and someone gets hurt or killed, exactly how much responsibility will
I have?
I'm usually waking up the sun, I'm at work before it makes it's way
up, It's just the moon and I in the pre-dawn drive, maybe a star or two. I only see the sunrise 1 or 2 days a week. :-(

Ha, I like that idea - the sun greets you!
You know, you've reminded me that I used to call for snow as a child, the no school today kind of snow. Don't remember how successful that may have been. Know I called rain successfully once, but I think that's called coincidence.
So if I were to try to invoke mist, I'd go to a secluded place, like a cove, when there isn't too much wind & the temp. is favorable. Then I'd try to get the water sprites & wind nymphs to dance with me, picturing mist. I'd probably want a full moon so I could see how successful (or not) I was. Nothing educated in this, just what I'd try. Worst thing that happens is you have fun and give the squirrels something to talk about.

Greetings:
I meant to say that I'm on the road and at my job before the
sun comes up, so I usually miss it .8O
The thing with me is; I do many things on instinct, I've had no
training on calling the winds, storms, rain or anything just sometimes I walk outside, think of the rain, remember the smell of rain on a newly plowed field, The hunger for the smell, taste and sensation is quite powerful, I beckon to the sky and usually within half an hour it's raining. Doesn't last very long, but it's enough to
make me aware of the gift I've received.
Wish a breeze on a hot day, I just sit and think about it and soon it's there. I don't believe in coincidence. We have the gifts we have
for a reasoon, we meet the people we meet, for a reason.
I've not been concerned that the weather wasn't something
I could manage well, but I am interested.

Sounds like your instincts are serving you pretty well!
Do what feels right - let us know! Maybe some morning I'll stop & try it on my way in to work - what a way to start the day!

:) Thing is that all this is hit or miss, because I don't understand
the why's or how's if there are any, so my results are sparotic,
at best. I'll keep trying, maybe I'm dabbling in too many things at once and not focused. I've been told I souldn't try to work
the magicks I don't understand, I don't really have any other
way to learn if I don't try things.
If you decide to try the method, please keep me posted on
your results.

the storms that come, and I have but once made rain come. I have never been able to do it again:-D

I always enjoy storms thoroughly. And if you've called rain once, then you're ahead of most of the crowd! Hmmm... I suppose if we can call rain (or try to) then the next time we have something planned for outdoors we could call the sun. Silly me, I never thought of that side of it! :-)

I've been on the receiving end of an indirect lightning strike, put
me on my back side in a hurry, I still attract lightening, needless
the rituals I need to preform out in a storm are more than a little
limited.
Being a witch, I respect the elements, all have a purpose.
I feel there's more to this than just calling the weather to do our bidding. Perhaps like with my other spell casting, the need has to
be clear, and exact, "be careful what you wish for".
I have to write things out and re-read to make sure I haven't put
something in a spell that's going to cause bad for others.
I just cry when I see my herbs and garden, burning up in the heat
so I only ask for a little for them to survive, they don't much care
for chlorine, they get it, but like us they don't thrive on it.
My defination of what humankind needs, differ from another's
opinion, If I could work on a grand scale, there would always be
enough for life to thrive; however respecting nature and her
wisdom, I can only sit by and watch as she yeilds her destructive
side, feel the power, share it, move on. That's the nature of
things. Just my opinion.

Yeah, destruction is necessary for growth. It's like watching the nature shows - you know most animals have to kill to survive, but sometimes you just don't feel like dealing with it.
On the lighter side, I'm sure that when I was a kid I thought that snow days were necessary for my survival :-)

Greetings:
LOL. Snow days are essential for survival; whether it's the
childrens survival or the teachers is still out for a vote.
I still enjoy them; South Carolina drivers can't handle snow
and ice, so even though I learned to deal with this type
of storm in Illinois; when the Gov. closes the highways,
I stay home and enjoy my herbal tea or a nice cup of cocoa,
and watch the accident total climb. Some people just never
learn when Mother Nature lets her hair down it's best just to try
to stay out of her way.

Illinois! You had real snow there! We used to get alot of snow in Ohio, but no in the last 15 years or so. I remember measuring it with a yardstick when I was a kid, but you don't even need a ruler very often now.
We get freezing rain alot though, and I've just decided that I won't drive to work (35 miles) on freezing rain anymore.
