I used to use a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol but I don't know how good that was. You might try witch hazel.

If you get commercially prepared witch hazel...it's not much different from regular rubbing alcohol.

I don't know if you can get rid of oily skin but you can do things to control it. Sometimes, the commercially prepared stuff that are used to dry up your oily skin can make it worse. Your diet is very important...the usual...drink lots of water, fresh fruit, etc...
Here's a recipe for an herbal face mask for oily skin...
1 tsp each of chamomile, horsetail, kelp powder, juniper berries, lemon balm, lavender, & orange peel. Ground into a powder. Add in 1 tsp of green clay.
Use 1 tsp of herb mix & 2 tbsp of ground oatmeal (not the instant kind). Combine with 3 tbsp of distilled water in a glass or stainless steel pot. Heat gently until mixture thickens. Don't let it burn. Once the mixture has thickened, add 2 drops tea tree essential oil, 2 drops grapefruit essential oil, & 1 drop lavender essential oil.
Clean your face & apply mask when mixture is still warm. Don't use it hot. Let it sit for 15-20 mins. Good time to relax, read a book, have a cup of tea. Wash off with warm water. You might want to use a light or oil-free moisturizer when done.

A blend of Cypress Oil and Juniper Oil is excellent for oily skin. Either use an Aloe Vera Gel base or a vitamin e base. I would use 30mls of base and 15 drops of the oils.

I'm with Wildchild on this one... start with the inside. I'm a firm believer in the power of water. Drink lots and lots of water and eat fresh fruit. What about your Zinc? Do you take vitamins? Green tea also might help you to detoxify your system.

Thank you all for the lovely warm welcome - Ilook forward to getting to know you all.
I am a qualified practising Holistic Aromatherapist hence my knowledge of essential oils. I am currently studying for a diploma in nutrition as well!!!!
I do agree with the advice given to drink water. We should drink at least 2 litres of water per day! Although I have been taught that fresh fruit/vegetable juice can be used as well!
Bright blessings to all,

This is a recipe that I used to make for my little brother when he was going through the "spots"...
1 tsp jojoba oil
20 drops lavender essential oil
20 drops tea tree essential oil
Store the oils in a sterilized, airtight container. Dab the oil on the spots 2x a day. Use a clean q-tip each time. This dried up the spots quickly with no scarring.

Oh, forgot to mention to do the "patch" test first to make sure you're not going to have any bad reaction to this. Dab a bit on the inside of your forearm & put a bandaid over it. Leave 24 hours. If it's not red & rashy, you're ok to use it.

Tea Tree and Lavender are two of the safest oils on the market so safe in fact you can use them neat in cases of emergency. but for sensitive skin you are always wise to do a patch test. One question tho' are you using 5mls of base oil? That is nowhere near enough for the amount of essential oils you are using.
If you wish to make a 5% blend you should use equal amounts of base oil and essential oils. Ie 5mls of base oil = 5 drops of essential oil.

Yes, that is a high concentration. If it was anything other than lavender & teatree, I wouldn't recomend using it that high. It's ok to use just to dab on the "spots". :D After the patch test, of course. :D
I didn't get a chance to welcome you earlier! Welcome, LittleElf! We could sure use an aromatherapist here! I know a lot of people have asked about blending & making their own oils. Would love to see a new thread about that. :)

If you don't have overly sensitive skin, you could try ordinary talcum powder. Not the kind in baby powder, you want it to be unscented (less irritation, if you do have sensitive skin). I used to have oily skinn, and I would take a cotton ball and place a bit of talcum powder on it, and rub it across my forhead area. Of course I made sure that my face was cleansed well each night.
This tip also works for an oily hair problem. If your hair is particularly oily, or you skipped a day washing, you can sprinkle talcum powder on your hands and brush them through your hair. Works well for collecting the Oils, and making your hair appear normal for the day :o)
