View Full Version : Where and When for SE Meet Up?

Ok, I am naming this SE meetup, as that seems to be what we have turned into LOL.

In the poll select the best weekends for you. Also the worst weekends for you.

Then select general locations that will work for you. Also select the locations that absolutely will not work for you. Central NC seems to be the most centralized location, when we are talking about VA, WV, NC, SC... and whoever else. Correct me if I am wrong.

I voted as well, but did not vote for any dates as I cannot honestly say when I will be free to that detail as of yet.

Well, I tried to vote, but only logged in one before I clicked the button.

Since I'm pretty flexible, I'll be the swing vote, if needed. I just can't go to Myrtle Beach. At any time. Ever.

I only threw that in as I could not think of anything else LOL...

Of course the areas listed are just general areas.. anywhere around them works too.

So what's everyone's preferrence as to where we stay/go what we do?

I for one would love to lodge up in some cabins with everyone somewhere. Cabins even eliminate the need for tents. Make a weekend of it or what not. And the price seems right. Is anyone else interested in that?

If we go towards a more urban area, and some spend the night, the thought of springtime motel/hotel room rates scares the crap out of me, especially in the mountains, or beaches at that time of year.

So what's everyone else's thoughts on that?

Personally, I think cabins might be expensive this time of year, just like motels, but if I had my wish I'd go for everyone staying in cabins near a wooded area, ya know, with lots of that nature stuff around those pagans rave about so much! ;)

Outside of that, tents. Of course, staying over at someone's house as the benefit of privacy and their permission to take anything you find (such as oh, a stone, whatever) that many parks may not be too keen on if a nature walk sprang up, and you wouldn't need to worry about being too loud (hopefully).

As for what we do, I can have a blast without spending a dime on entertainment. Staying a weekend in a cabin or tents, letting nature and each other provide the entertainment. This of course also provides the perfect opportunity for me to scare people and play hide-and-seek! :hehehehe: Basically, something without a lot of fuss, very casual, hanging out, that sort of thing.

I believe another thing we need to worry about, should it turn into an overnight or weekend event is food. Some people may have special dietary needs, which we should probably discuss before hand unless everybody just wants to bring their own food, not worry about cooking out or going out to eat.

I can do the cabin thing....but camping would be too expensive for me since I have no gear (stolen 2 years ago :flamer: )

And I am one of those who have food allergies, but can cook out with you guys as long as you keep your buns off my food!

I just checked and we have no camping gear either. :(

I don't have any food allergies, but I am a vegeterian with a vegan preference, not that I expect anyone to accomodate me. I can bring my own food.

P.S. Memorial Day weekend is not really a good time for any of us to be traveling. It's dangerous :(

Linx
March 22nd, 2004, 10:28 PM
Ok, what I mean by cabins, is those at the parks... maybe we can find some in other areas too, if that's what gets voted on. With those, all you need is yourself, your clothes, food cooler, and a pillow and sleeping bag or blanket etc, no real camping gear.
I am quoting my post from the other thread below, click on the links look at the prices. This is VERY doable, very affordable and many activities. As for food, well, you can cook there, or go with just cold foods such as cold foods. We can all share (if agreed) and if someone has allergies, they need to make sure they bring things they can eat (just in case) keeping up with everyones allergies could be hard, if we get a lot of people.

Hi... Here I AM. hehe

Ok... this thread grew so fast... it beat out my grass and thats fast. I have a few thoughts on this. Well ok many thoughts. And trying to take all into consideration... here they are.

I seen some mention bringing kids...

I seen some mention the cost...

I seen some mention it needed to be a weekend...

and I seen some mention it needed to be centralized...

Here are my thoughts on the whole thing. I am not sure how many other places there are out there more centralized, but I will tell you what we have around here, and it works great for all the above mentioned items except for maybe being centralized...

There are quite a few locations around me, that allow camping...thats right you heard me CAMPING. This makes it affordable for any who need to spend the night. And the cost of the campins sites are very reasonable... vary from 10-25 bux a night. This means kids would be welcome, you could arrive as early in the day as you wanted, and leave as late on a sunday as you liked... perfect for a weekend in the spring. With hotel costs being what they are, well this may be a good idea. And you can party together all night pretty much.

Here are a few locations...

1. Kings Mountain...
http://www.discoversouthcarolina.co...ins.asp?PID=945

This particularly stands out... we could all go in... or just get regular camping areas each...

Camps Cherokee and York provide an ideal setting for large groups. Camps include rustic cabins, mess hall and bathhouse.

Camp Cherokee sleeps up to 104 people and rents for a minimum of $225/day plus electricity; $3.25/person over 70 people.

Camp York sleeps up to 140 people and rents for a minimum of $290/day plus electricity; $3.25/person over 90 people.

2. Morrow Mountain
http://www.ils.unc.edu/parkproject/visit/momo/fee.html

This stands out here...

Camping

Camping in non-electric sites: $15 per day, per site; $10 per day for senior citizens ages 62 and older. A picnic table and grill are located at the campsite. Water, restrooms and shower facilities are located nearby. A dump station for RVs is provided free of charge to campers. Electric sites are not available at this park.
Backpack campsites: $9 per day, per site. Pit toilets nearby.
Group campsites: $40 per day, per site, 35-person capacity. Water, restrooms, and shower facilities nearby. Reservations required.

3. Dan NIcholas Park
http://www.co.rowan.nc.us/parks/dnp/page7.html

Here is the info for here...

FAMILY CAMPING
Rowan Co. Nonresident
Residents
Sites 42-51 (50 amp) $21.00 $23.00

Other sites w/ elec &water ( 5 max) $17.00 $19.00

Without electricity & water $15.00 $17.00

Additional Persons $1.00 $1.00

Weekly (Limited 14 day stay) $102.00 $114.00

OK, so does anyone know of any other places like this? Is this something that would be acceptable to most of us? I mean all we would have to bring is ourselves, clothes, sleeping bags, and food. What are your thoughts?

I also meant to mention all of these places have activities for kids and adults alike. And are much less expensive then kings dominion or six flags for those who may be on a tight budget. We could start a pool of money and end for the end of May, middle of June. Middle of June gives time for kids to get out of school. We could place our reservation NOW if we have enough people interested. Speak up people. I am getting excited

BTW, if we want to go really cheap, and dont have as many people needed for a campground (and I can talk my hubby into it,) I have room on my property for about 20-30 to pitch tents... I also have outside water, electricity, and an outdoor cooking area. The only thing we would have to figure is parking, and if I explained to my neighbors... I am on a private road, we would probably be fine for just the weekend parking on the road itself.

As you can see above... the prices are great. We could get cabins and mess hall for 225 bux a day plus electricity at King's Mountain. With 50 of us that would probably be 6-10 bux each... then whatever each of us spends on gas and food. An AWESOME deal! Lets say we only have 20 people, thats still probably only going to be about 15 bux each (and you can bring your family at that price!) We can fill it up to 104 people, but i doubt we get that many. If we do there is another site, and it is larger and higher priced, but more people offset the cost.

I would be happy to make reservations if we go with something like this. And I have a paypal account, and would be able to collect the money from everyone by that way, or by check or MO, to assure the space is paid for prior to arriving.

Can you tell I am excited?! :)

Aidron
March 22nd, 2004, 11:03 PM
I doubt we will get more than 15 people to be honest, and as for cabins, in a park or out in a more remote area, whichever is fine by me.

Kings Mountain isn't too far from me so gas money would be easy for me, so I could probably stand to afford the cabin... maybe, but I can't speak for everyone else.

There is primative camping there (no showers, toilets, etc.) and I honestly think that is free (not that I want to do that ever again) as my best friend's family and I used to go there every summer years ago a nd I don't recall us ever paying once.

Activity wise, I'm not too keen on organized set things, so don't mind me if I happen to curl up under a tree while everyone is off doing something scheduled. I'm very whimsical in my activities. :hehehehe:

just a sidebar conversation....a few weeks we had to give my daughter's puppy away, as she had bitten my husband and lunged after other dogs when on walks, food agression with our other dog, etc, etc. Savannah has been on a "you have to get me another pet kick" ever since.

Savannah "I've decided you can get me a baby male lamb, that will drink from a bottle."

Me "Sweetie, who is going to come and watch all these animals when we go on vacation? We can take Tala (our puppy) but we don't have anyone to come take care of a lamb."

S - "well, where are we going?"

Me - "To the beach, to NJ for a week, oh, and we're going camping with some friends in SC in June."

S- "We don't know any friends in SC."

So, when you meet Savannah tell her you wanna be her friend! She doesn't understand how I can call you people friends when I've never met you

I'd be game seeing my husband is in Iraq :) I didn't vote on dates or anything but I know anytime towards the end of may and onward would work. As for the place...well anywhere is going to be a travel for me as I live right on the coast...Raleigh is 3 hours so that might be a little bit better, although I tend to get very very lost in big towns :D I have no food allegries or anything. Just need to bring my kid :)

Definately!!! I'll be in Bay Head, visiting my husband's family at some point. Haven't gotten word from when the Texas faction will be there - we're trying to synchronize our visits so we can see 'em all at once.

So bring puppy with you! My kids would help babysit him/her LOL.

Going OT here... We have 3 dogs. One large Lab mix.. he loves everyone, but hates other dogs that don't live here, and will feel threatened by someone new for about 30 minutes. So he will hide behind myself or Lloyd. Then we have a PomTzu (pom and shitzu mix), he is a cute sweetie, and loves everyone, and every dog upon meeting. Then the littliest is a Chi Chi (Chiauhua mix) and he loves everyone too, but is very scared of everyone the first time he meets them, every time he meets them LOL. You come to my house last week? Well he don't remember... he has to check you out again.

Anyway, we will be leaving them at home. The weather is nicer now, and Drakken (the Lab mix) is a mostly outdoor dog anyway. The Little ones are out in the day while we are gone, but in at night. They will be outside with him while we are gone. We have done it before. We place Drakken in the rear fence, and Loki and Stimpy (he is definitely a stimpy) in the fence closer to the house. They seem to do well. Then my neighbor up the road rides through our driveway on his way to and from when he goes somewhere, just in case one of the littler ones decides to tunnel out hehe.

y'all decide where and when and I will be able to say weither or not I can make it...

Just one Question though:

Why is NC being concidered as the most central location? Northern GA Southern Tenn is the most central area of the SE USA

13thChylde
March 25th, 2004, 08:12 PM
We have several locations listed on the poll, although TN is not one of them. Dunno why, other than no one seemed to be from there when the conversation started :)

mudweed
March 26th, 2004, 07:06 AM
That, and it started out as just NC/SC... and then it evolved. I don't think there are too many people from Florida or from Western TN, coming either. Plus, me and 13th live here (and yes, Raven, too). What better reason? :D

Linx
March 26th, 2004, 01:15 PM
Right to both 13th and Mudweed. When we started this, it started as an NC/SC thing. Then others further north were interested (whoo hoo). Though no one came forward from AL, GA, TN, KY, or MS. Those 5 states plus SC, NC, WV, and VA make up the SE US. Since all posters responding were from either SC, NC, VA, or WV, and certain places were mentioned. When I started the poll, I was trying to keep within this area, to make travel easier for all who wanted to come.

This morning after seeing these last posts, I went and did some research. This is what I found. Looking within the following states... NC, SC, VA, WV, TN, and GA. Still no responses or word from anyone in AL, MS, KY, or FL about wanting to join us.

Distance from town to Kings Mountain, NC in Cleveland County:
South Carolina
Myrtle Beach, SC 4 hours 33 minutes, 203 miles
Columbia, SC 2 hours 4 minutes, 120 miles
Tennessee
Nashville, TN 6 hours 25 minutes, 378 miles
Georgia
Altanta, GA 3 hours 32 minutes, 215 miles
Virginia
Virginia Beach, VA 6 hours 34 minutes, 371 miles
Richmond, VA 5 hours 20 minutes, 322 miles
West Virginia
Charleston, WV 4 hours 48 minutes, 292 miles
Alabama
Montgomery, AL 6 hours 9 minutes, 375 miles
North Carolina
Wilmington, NC 4 hours 39 minutes, 229 miles
Raleigh, NC 3 hours 16 minutes, 198 miles
Kentucky
Lexington, KY 6 hours 21 minutes, 396 miles

From what is shown above, Those both in VA and in TN, depending on where in those states, will have to travel about the same distance. Gerogians and Eastern Carolinians will have to travel about the same distance. West Virginians and South Carolinians may have to travel about the same distance. This is for Kings Mountain. Going more north east towards Raleigh reduces time traveling for those In VA, but increases it for those in SC or even Ten, if we get any. The same thing happens going more southwest, but in reverse. When we were just talking NC, SC and VA Central NC around Salisbury, Greensboro, or Raleigh area probably would have been more central. BUt if we are now talking about The whole of the south eastern US, seems that Kings Mountain, NC is not too off base for central, with the exception of Florida who would possibly end up traveling a max milage of 738 miles, and a time of 11 hours 38 minutes.

I am sorry if the locations on the poll upset anyone, I was only trying to be fair, and using some of the suggestions already submitted. I would like for any who want to come to be able to come, if at all possible. I could not find anything in searching to tell me the exact center of the south eastern states. However for any of you interested, the exact center of the continental 48 states, is the small town of Lebanon, Kansas. Nice piece of trivia there.

*Editing this because, Kings Mountain park (Not Kings Mountain NC) Is actually in York County SC, in the town of Blacksburg. However this only alters those distances above by about roughly 13 minutes or 8 miles, depending on where your coming from. This could add 15 minutes or subtract 15 mins from your ride.*

Linx
March 26th, 2004, 02:34 PM
Ok... So here I am trying to do more research so that we can all get an idea of time traveling (hehe, time travel), and cost of this little adventure. I plan on calling the park later today to find out which dates are available, since the Charlotte area has the most votes so far. This way we can get an idea of what dates we can't have right off the get go, if we go with this location. North of charlotte is following second, and i am going to call there as well, as they have cabins too. and Morrow Mountains cabins have two bedrooms and can accomodate 6 each, but we may be out of luck for there anyway, depending on what they consider *summer months* because then you have to rent for a week, not just a weekend.

With Kings Mountain, you can go for only a weekend, but from reading i am under the impression is a two night minimum. While this is not problem for me, it may be for others, however the cost is still fair. With the smaller camp, and 20 adults, we will be looking at about $25 per each adult for both nights. If for some reason we end up with less than 20, then it is only fair that those of us with children somehow divide up the ramining money due between ourselves. Of course if we get more people to come, the cost per adult would go down considerably. here is an example:

20 adults= $25 approx each adult for 2 nights
30 adults= $17 approx each adult for 2 nights
40 adults= $14 approc each adult for 2 nights

If anyone has a better way to work out cost per person, let me know. Of course we will have a better idea of cost, once we know exactly how many people are planning to attend. And how many of us are bringing children. It may work out that each adult pays a certain amt, and children are a certain amt.So far it looks like we could have a good turn out. Below is who I have collected that seems interested. If your not on the list, and want to be, PM me, if your on the list, and know your not going to come, or don't want to PM me, and I will remove your name.

Ok, looks like we may need to do a quick vote change on dates, and plan further out timewise, or pick another location. King's Mountain's cabin is only available Aug 27th, Oct 8th and Nov 5th, and we would have to decide quickly if we want to snag one of those dates, the rest of the times are booked already.

October is entirely too long to wait. I mean, sure, I could make it in October, but we could have two other meetups between now and then if we put our minds to it!

If anyone is still interested in a June meetup either in lieu of or in addition to an October meetup, where are we going and when???

To be honest with you, Later June is my best option. I have to put in a SF-71 and get it approved....that takes time...minimum of two weeks....so the later the better for me (in June that is, anything farther than June and I would have to wait until they get to that month....which would begin in end April Early May).

And heck if we are talking the Ashville region, we could just look at seeing if the Biltmore would give us a discount.....(not likely, but I can wish!)

Divided per person this would come to "roughly" $15 (trying to include taxes in) a night per person for lodging. With no kitchen use. Now of course less people attending the higher cost for the night. I would be paying for 4 people myself... basically 1 half a suite, if needed I could cover the whole suite and use all of it, placing my kids in half. Of course people who wanted to bring more people, and pay for half a suite, or an entire one would be welcome as well, as everything helps.

They also have whitewater rafting, hiking, and horseback riding.

This place is available (as of today) on...
May 15th
June 12th

Balsam Lake Lodge...
http://www.cs.unca.edu/nfsnc/recreation/balsam_lake.pdf

This place houses 20 people including children, so if we go with this, it would probably be best to leave any children at home, to make more room for more of us MWers.
The cost is $200 per night (min of 2 nights) So, that would make the cost $20 (plus tax)per person for both nights. If we have 20, of course if we have less then the cost goes up. I kinda like the idea of this place. You arrive on Friday, and Check-out on Sunday.

The ONLY dates available ALL summer until SEPT are...
May 7th
May 21st

If you guys can do those dates, great. I however would not be able to make the 21st for sure, and am unsure myself about the 7th, it may be too soon after just getting this new job (but I can try).

They have hiking, and Fishing, and are close to Blue Ridge Pkwy

Chestnut Ridge...
http://www.campchestnutridge.org/
Located in Efland, NC (Central NC)

This place would cost $21 per person per night. We could stay for just one night if we wanted. Their rates are based per person, and nothing else. You can also select to have them prepare all your food as well, during reservation time, and the costs per meal are very reasonably, and they have it set up kinda like a buffet. Here is an idea of meal costs...

Bearkfast $6
AM Snack $3
Lunch $7
PM Snack $3
Dinner $8

They have many activities.

They have these weekends available...
June 12
June 19 (possible)
June 26

Arrowmont...
http://www.arrowmont.com/
Collowhee, NC (mountains)

$13 per person per night camping in rustic cabins that sleep 8 per cabin. Children under 12 are free. So you would be inside, but still roughing it, this is much the same thing as what King's Mountain would have had been like. They have tails, and horseback riding.

I was unable to reach them this weekend, so I do not know of available dates.

Well, that is what I have come up with for now.
I do have a local motel (typical small town motel) That we could all stay at, bunking up in rooms would save money, the rooms are usually $40 bux a night. I would have to call for exact prices for the weekend that gets chosen. Close to Morrow Mountain state park, Dan Nicholas park, A drive in theater, and 2 lakes. All necessities and restaurants close by. The historic town of Gold Hill, only minutes away.

The Biltmore Estate sounds cool, but I think $36 per person for a tour is a bit steep. And there was no answer today so I have no idea what group discounts are. And even if we toured the Biltmore, it would still leave us looking at where to go after, or where to stay for those who need to stay a night or two.

I guess, we just need to know what everyone prefers, It is all the same to me. So lets get cracking so we at least know where we want to go.

I would LOVE to go, personally, no matter where we go. My problem(s) are, however, transformation, and The Parents. I won't be eighteen until June, hence, I'd have to let my mom know and she might protest and yadayada...any suggestions? Does anyone live south of Raleigh, or east, that wouldn't mind swinging by and picking me up? Please?

Definately!!! I'll be in Bay Head, visiting my husband's family at some point. Haven't gotten word from when the Texas faction will be there - we're trying to synchronize our visits so we can see 'em all at once.

Are you guys near Bay Head? Or Manaloken (sp?)?
No where near there, but I'll drive ;) It can't be more than three hours away from me in any direction anyways :D

Ok, just about any weekend works for me, EXCEPT the first and second weekend in June.

I like Bend of Ivy a LOT, but would like to know how much they charge. Anything else is acceptable too.

For the thought of Kings Mountain in October, just a couple of thoughts (being in the SCA and doing a LOT of events in those camps over the years):

1) the camp is in foothills, which is not much of a problem, except that you cannot drive up (or down to) the cabins. Errosion of the soil from hard rains has become a major problem, and the ruts in what used to be the roads to the cabins are impassible to all but the biggest SUVs.

2) the cabins are... rustic. yeah. Ummm... They have electricity, and 2 to 4 bunk beds suitable for children's camp (which is what the camp is used for a LOT in the summer). If it's cold, bring PLENTY of blankets, as there is no heat in the cabins. If you like comfort, bring an air matress cuz the matresses are as hard as the floor. There are enough showers (and a big enough water heater) though, so that's a plus.

3) The scenery is gorgeous. They are located on a lake (and early enough in the year it's wonderful to swim in that lake), and the woods are always wonderful. THey have a full eating hall with kitchen, but as of the last SCA event *I* know of that was held there, one of the ovens doesn't work right (has two settings: off, and FURNACE). that's ok, cuz the other oven works, and all the burners work.

I'm not getting down on King's Mountain, I go there at least 2 times a year for SCA events, but just wanted to let people know what to expect. The last time I did a late year event (beginning of November) the hubby and I froze our behinds off (and that was with 3 sleeping bags, 2 blankets, enough wool material to make a great kilt -9 yards folded over a couple of times), and we were STILL freezing cold. But see, our cabin didn't have shutters on the front window screens.

well, giving that you can get permission i will have to go through raleigh pretty much anywhere we go, so i could give you a lift.

For the other stuff, any of the weekends in may and past that work for me. Price isn't too big of a problem, so I don't mind where we stay. I just HAVE to bring my kid. He's almost 15 months. I have no one to watch him as all my family lives in KY, OH and FL. I liked falling waters the best I think. But I"m game for whatever anyone else likes. I also did like the Ivy bend or whatever it was called. Just let me know :)

Phew, apparently I've missed a lot. May would definitely have not worked for me, or any month past June since I plan to be in school by then, and with also working, I'll be lucky if I have any free time.

Still, it's all a moot point since I am afraid I am going to have to drop out of the meet-up due to personal reasons. Sorry everyone.

Well, the poll closes tomorrow, but it would seem we are no closer to having any idea of where to meet, than we were before the poll opened. :)

I am afraid Bend of Ivy will be out. I have been emailing them back and forth, and they have still yet to give me available dates, and pricing. They have been very nosey, and I have answered all questions they asked. I guess they did not like my answers, as I have not heard anything more from them in about 3-4 days.

Looking at the date that is most likely to get chosen (June 19th) There was only one tentative place that was available then. and that was Chestnut Ridge. Of course !3th has offered up her home and yard for camping, I can offer up mine for the same, and there is always still the idea of taking over an inexpensive motel for the weekend.

I suppose we just need to know who is definitely interested and planning on coming/going, and what is going to suit us all. Speak up! :)

Linx,
Are there any other places where you've looked and the prices are reasonable? Have we considered going to a campground somewhere?

Linx
April 5th, 2004, 06:59 PM
Cielamara, The places I have prices on are somewhere in this thread.

We have thought of campgrounds with cabins, but none of those have any availability this spring/summer, we would have to wait until fall. Quite a few people had said they had hoped not to tent out in tents. Even going to my home, or 13th's home would require camping in tents. I know of a whole slew of tent campgrounds that probably would have the available dates. The thing is, most people either don't have the camping equiptment, or they prefer not to be bug eaten, and dirty.

All of the places I have found for "inhouse" style shelter, have been reasonably priced. Unfortunately, the dates at the locations are not working with what the poll and posts are saying. So, all of us staying in one place is starting to look glum... Unless we take over a motel.

As it is looking, unless someone has a better idea... Is that we should just select a location to spend the weekend. Such as Morrow Mountain (NE of Charlotte), Kings Mountain (SW of Charlotte), Dan Nicholas Park (N of Charlotte), Or something similar (All those places have camping). We pick the place based on the fact that some may have children, that we want to be able to cook out, have campfires, and other activities. Then whoever wants to pitch a tent may do so, and those who want to get a motel room can do so as well. Then the option is left to the person themselves, as to where they actually sleep if they stay over.

I would be more than happy to do the research to give info on these parks, on camping info, on lodging locations, and on close by attractions and restaurants.

Seems our date is going to be June 18th, 19th & 20th. Does the above idea sound ok to everyone? Do we need another poll to select an exact location? If so, post and let me know. I will check back either later this evening, or in the morning hours. If another poll is needed, I can then post the poll, with links and info on each location.

BTW, if you know of another park that allows camping in the same general location (Charlotte area) please post it as well, so it can be included in the poll, should we have one.

Speak your minds! :)

Chestnut Ridge is a few miles from my house, so if that's the chosen destination some ppl could rough it at my house. I'm not 100% sure that we will be able to make the June 18/19th date, as I'm waiting to hear from my in-laws as to when we're going to be in Jersey.

What I can offer is room for some tents, a pond, a small but cozy home (only 1 toilet, though!!) and my husband is a pretty good grill-man. Fishing is available - bring your rods and poles.

I will light a fire under my inlaws, so that I can at least know if the dates work.

I am also in favor of overtaking a hotel. That way at least the basics are covered and we can go explore whatever city we're in.

I'm surprised I didn't think of the hotel idea when I was still going. That sounds like something I'd come up with so I wouldn't have to deal with bugs biting me.

On the other hand, it's probably the most expensive solution.

For hotels, in Charlotte is going to be much higher then in a small surrounding town. If you start calling Raven you may want to check out prices in both areas.

I really want to see this happen, and it is taking so long LOL. I am about ready to just get together with 13th, plan out a meeting place, and telling you all how to get there LOL! Filling you in on other info so that you could decide where and if you wanted to stay. Cause then we could start finding out for sure who can come, who can't, and how we can help others to be able to come! :)

I agree with 13th, we are dragging our feet! :) And since I kinda stepped in trying to organize some of this, here is my suggestion. I think it may just be a good one. Since some us will need lodging, and some will have children, and not everyone wants to *rough* it, and I think having some of the most popular, known restaurants, and things available is a good thing. Ok, what a run on sentence. Looks like our date is June 19th. Also looks like Charlotte and N of Charlotte see to be good places. So here goes.

I suggest that we use Salisbury, NC as our general location. It is just 25 minutes NE of Charlotte. www.ci.salisbury.nc.us/ There are many restaurants that will be familiar to all of you (Outback, Applebee's, IHOP, Shoneys, Pizza Hut, a good chinese place, and all the known fast food joints) and the largest mall in the area is just 20 mins south www.concordmills.com , along with many other shops, and eateries. Salisbury also features a small Art Museum, the Salisbury Emporium (great place for great finds), and some Civil War tours and other stuff if anyone is interested. Just north in Spencer is the Transportation Museum if that interests anyone. It is also home to Dan Nicholas park.

We can reserve a shelter at Dan Nicholas park www.co.rowan.nc.us/parks/dnp/ for Saturday day time, and have a cookout/get together there. The park offers many things for little ones to do. It has the usual park goodies such as a playground and concessions, but then goes above and beyond with a carousel, mini train, paddle boats, gem mining, mini golf, mini zoo, fishing, and of course camping. Children can do all activities for like a total of $7 I think. Please check the site for camping info if that interests you. They have tent camping, as well as hook ups for campers.

Those that need more conventional lodging could pick from a number of motels/hotels Hotels in Salisbury (http://www.google.com/local?q=Hotels&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&near=Salisbury,+NC&dm=full) and can join us for activities. We could plan the daytime thing at Dan Nicholas park, and then perhaps Saturday night all caravan down to the mall, or out to dinner somewhere.

I think this leaves it more open for any who may want to join us. And any who live close and want to make a day trip of it can. Those who live a greater distance away, have choices in their lodging and it leaves something for everyone. Anyone coming from a distance could arrive on Friday, get settled, and then join us on Saturday and Saturday night, and could head back out on Sunday.

Those of us who could help with transporting others should speak up and let people know where you are, and what distance your willing to go to pick up someone. Perhaps we can cover everyone this way. I live SE of Salisbury, but N of Concord & W of Albemarle and could offer a ride to anyone over this way within about 30 minutes of me.

So... how does this idea work for all of you? Come on speak up! :)

Also, I live near the area, and depending on when the Meet is, I COULD let a few people stay over in my home.

*Conditions: Must not be allergic to cat hair, (if more then one person wants to stay here) must not mind sleeping on the floor on an air matress or the couch, and the meet can't be either the first or second weekend in June for this offer to be valid, cuz the first weekend the hubby won't be home (and he doesn't like me to let "strangers" stay overnight without him here), and the second weekend of June I have prior commitments.

It's starting to look like I can't come...that first weekend, I think, will be my trip to the beach with my dad for his annual work conference. (I never get to go to the beach, and I DESPERATELY need to go when I can, otherwise I feel waterless and deprived for the rest of the year!), and that second weekend is right around my birthday. I currently don't have a license, because, well, I haven't been ready to get it until now, I don't even have my permit, but I plan to get my license when I turn eighteen. My eighteenth birthday is the Thursday before that second weekend, and there's no way my daddy is going to let me run off to anywhere overnight with one of his vehicles so soon after acquiring said license. So...maybe next year?
