These aren't gross pictures of victims or anything - just photos of what is left in the area. The narrative was written by a woman who likes to ride her motorcylce through the ghost towns. It is really interesting, and devastating at the same time. Check it out.

That’s the second time such a thing happens today on this board. First time was with p3 wicca and her website.

This young woman is quite the documentary-maker. She should submit this as a plan for a movie. This is so powerful, and her ironic words are equally impressive. Thanks for sharing this--it brings a lot of much-needed perspective!

This gives a different meaning to "ghost town" than the wild west here in the USA.

Creepy.
I've never seen anything like that.
I remember when it happened. I was still in high school.
I also remember thinking 'who cares'. :geez:
So I was wrong.
It bothers me to see how bad it really was.
I was riveted by those photos.

Wow... I'm really impressed. This article makes you think about what really happened there and how those people's life changed forever in a matter of hours. I'm out of words now...

I was only a little younger, but I remember thinking the same thing. I had NO idea how many lives were impacted by this. All the people that had to uproot and leave their entire lives behind. Knowing that all your things - pictures of loved ones, childhood memories - it all still exists but is completely poisoned.

i was 3 y.o. and my sister was 1.5
at the time we were living in Belarus ( Belarussia, as the author of the web site calls it...the country that received about 70% of the radiation). i was too young to remember what happened that day, but my mother still tells me it was horribly hot that day, and the sky got dark... the government kept silence about it, but my grandmother, who was friends with some of the officials, called us demanding that we lock ourselves inside...
to this day, there are so many areas back home where one can no longer grow food, or go gathering berries or mushrooms ( a well-known and liked way of spending time when it's warm)- because of the radiation.

Does Chernobyl really mean "Wormwood" in russian translations?
Moon Daughter
April 1st, 2004, 09:33 PM
well, it could be one of the local terms for the plant, i am not sure.
i have never come across it myself.
however, the word Chernobyl has two roots- Chern(yj) and Byl.
Chernyj means black, and Byl means Myth, or Legend...

Thank you briar_rose!
Here it be:
"In Ukrainian language Chernobyl is a name for a grass, wormwood (absinth) This word scares the holly bejesus out of people here. If I tell someone that I am going to take a relaxing spin through the "dead zone"... the best case response is; "Are you nut?" "
Book Of Revelations - The third trumpet: The poisonous star
8:10-11 - Then the third angel blew his trumpet and there fell from the sky a huge star blazing like a torch. It fell upon a third of the rivers and springs of water. The name of the star is said to be Apsinthus. A third of all the waters turned into wormwood, and many people died because the waters had become so bitter.
I s'pose it's all old news but still I find it all so convienient.

althought majority of Ukranians DO speak russian, i do not speak Ukranian and so i was not aware of that meaning of the word.
Ouroboros,
seeing little things like your above post always makes me want to start a little book where i record such 'coicidences'.

I'm trying to keep on top of the bits of life I run across, that's why I have my writing outlet, my column "Theoretically Speaking" is like my experiment with expression.
I'm still trying to learn how to get people to understand these things clearly.

Alas, it's one disquality of being born suffocated with the loving information age, a doctor may say A.D.D prevented me from getting my social skills / communicative skills down properly. I don't mind it really, I enjoy the continual distractions, makes things boring quicker - change happens more rapidly. Bypassing simple skills like communicating / expressing was not something I was counting on, only recently have I been blooming with that.
I'm sort of inspired by my friends Alex Grey (http://www.alexgrey.com) and shamanist Alex Stark (http://www.alexstark.com) to develop these modes of expression outside the frame of my own mentality. You might also say I'm inspired by very very ancient civilizations, check out some work on that.
I think http://www.beyond-the-illusion.com has a beautiful file archive to at least help you do your own homework on this stuff. I'm sort of realizing that's what it comes down to, just doing it for yourself.
Much like a parent saying, "If I always do your homework for you now, how are you going to get through college?" To me it's become a conundrum, something that must be circumvented in order to establish inspiration amongst the many to inspire other people themselves.
Hope at least 23% of that made sense.

Thank's much for the documentary. While not having smoked pot for years, this presentation sobered me anyway.
